A03-02 BOX COMPRESSION STRENGTH The individual box container (empty) strength should meet the minimum strength define by the following formula. Compression Strength = 5.4 116 ´ - ´ h h Weight Weight is equal to the total weight of the packaged unit with accessories. The letter “h” is the outside height of the unit container. HP Corporate Packaging Rev. A The minimum required compressive strength of an individual container is: L =W x H h h - x F Where: L = minimum required compressive strength, lbf. W = weight of one individual container or shipping unit H = maximum stack height: Use 180” (457 cm) if unknown h = height of one individual container or shipping unit F = safety factor: Ø F=5 (empty box test) if only corrugated is supporting the entire compressive load. Ø F=4 (package test with additional internal support) when the cushion/product or inserts add additional compressive strength.
