First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Ma Yanhong and all the teachers here who have helped me in the process of writing this thesis. Thank you for your intellectual guidance, invaluable assistance and comments on my thesis. It is with your valuable assistance that I have finally 　accomplished this thesis. The title of my thesis is “A Study on Metaphors in the Big Bang Theory from the 　Cognitive Perspective”. This thesis is a tentative study to explore the metaphors used in the sitcom the Big Bang Theory within the theoretical frameworks of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and Conceptual Integration Theory (CIT) so as to understand the internal 　　structure of metaphor and its cognitive operating processes. Now I want to introduce the structure and the main point of each part. 　It includes three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. Introduction outlines the study of metaphor at home and abroad, and gives a brief 　introduction to the motivation and significance of choosing this topic of this thesis. Body part consists of four chapters. 　　　 Chapter One first makes a retrospective analysis and evaluation of the traditional views of metaphor represented by the Comparison Theory of Metaphor, the Substitution Theory and the Interaction Theory of Metaphor, and the contemporary views of metaphor represented by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory. 　　　 Chapter Two will firstly give a brief analysis of the Big Bang Theory and introduce different classifications of metaphor given by different linguists, as well as the internal structure of metaphor. And the relations between language, metaphor and 　cognition will be introduced. Chapter Three will make a detailed analysis of the metaphors in the Big Bang Theory through specific examples based on Lakoff’s classification on metaphor with 　the use of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Chapter Four will analyze the integration process of metaphors in the Big Bang Theory in Conceptual Integrating Theory, and then make a comparative evaluation of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory. 　　　 　Conclusion mainly introduces the main findings and significance of this thesis. Now I want to conclude the findings and significance in the following four points. Firstly, the application of the corpus in the Big Bang Theory further confirms 　Lakoff’s point of view: in our life, metaphors are universal. Secondly, Conceptual Integration Theory, compared with Conceptual Metaphor Theory, has a mightier explanatory force to analyze the meaning and the structure of 　　metaphors, and they are complementary to the interpretation of metaphors. Thirdly, this study aims at pointing out the cognitive mechanisms of metaphors by analyzing the metaphors in the Big Bang Theory so as to have a better understanding of metaphorical meaning and language form in different cultures from the cognitive perspective, and to enrich the studies of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory.　　　 Fourthly, this study has a certain practical significance for English language learning and teaching.　　　 At last, I want to say something about the innovations of my thesis in three points. 　　　 First, this thesis, with the sitcom the Big Bang Theory as its corpus, breaks previous studies of its linguistic characteristics, conversational implicature, irony, euphemism, humor and other areas of metaphor, and analyzes and discusses the metaphors in the most popular contemporary Conceptual Metaphor Theory and 　　Conceptual Integration Theory from the new perspective of cognition. Second, corpus is novel, and all the samples are from first-hand material which has not been previously analyzed by other scholars. And because of the language features of the American sitcom, all the samples are derived from life, with great authenticity, which also enhances the value of the authenticity of this thesis. Third, the combination of graphics, text and tables is used to explain the abstract 　concept, which will enable the discourse to become easier to understand. 　　That’s all. And some repeated words are used to explain 　the cognitive process of metaphor. 研究方法,　 In this thesis, a descriptive approach is adopted in the comprehensive analysis of metaphorical meaning and metaphor operating process in the Big Bang Theory from the perspective of cognition. The corpus is based on the conversation and utterances of the first season of the sitcom the Big Bang Theory. 136 metaphors are collected in this thesis through many transcripts of daily conversations.
