LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY - Wikispaces LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY by Gary Schmidt Narrator Willis Hurd Turner Buckminister Reverend Buckminster Lady Deacon Hurd Narrator: Turner Buckminster’s father is the new minister in a town called Phippsburg, Maine. Within hours of his arrival, Turner is sure he will never like this town, nor will he ever be accepted among his peers. Suddenly there is a glimmer of hope as Deacon Hurd and a group of boys, including the Deacon’s son, Willis invite him to join in an afternoon baseball game. Deacon Hurd: You ever play this game before, young Buckminister? Turner: Yes sir, all the time. Deacon Hurd: Then you’re the first man up. Narrator: Turner stepped to the granite plate and took a couple of slow swings. He straightened his left leg and cocked his right -- this usually confused the pitcher, though he noticed it didn’t affect this one. Willis held the ball a long while, still smiling, and then leaned forward, swung his arm low down, and lofted the ball into a high arc. Deacon Hurd: Strike one! Turner: Was that a pitch? Deacon Hurd: That was a strike. Turner: It landed on the plate! Deacon Hurd: That’s what a strike will do. I thought you said you’d played this game before! Turner Buckminister: Let’s see another strike. Narrator: And he did. Another high, lofting ball. No human being had ever pitched like that before. It added an entirely new aerial dimension to the game. And when the ball meandered down from about a mile above his head, Turner flailed at it as if it were a bumblebee. Deacon Hurd: (shouting) Strike two! You know you only got one more, son. Willis Hurd: Maybe you’d better bend that front leg. Lady from the crowd: (shouting) Are you holding that bat high enough, boy? (to herself) I don’t think he’s holding the bat high enough. I don’t think he’s holding it high enough at all. It’s too heavy for him. Deacon Hurd: You sure you don’t want to bend that leg. You’d balance better. Narrator: Rushing, rushing, rushing, waiting, waiting, waiting, swinging…. Deacon Hurd: (yelling loudly) Strike three! You’re out, boy! Willis Hurd: Bend your leg next time. Reverend Hurd: You’ll catch on, Turner. Next time you’ll catch on. Narrator: No one struck out the rest of the inning. Actually, no one struck out the entire game— except Turner. Turner was both embarrassed and humiliated. How could things possibly get any worse? He was the laughing stock of the whole town! Will things get any better for him? Read Lizzie Bright and the Buckminister Boy by Gary Schmidt to see how Turner adjusts to his life in this strange town.
