And the plenum has passed the 13th Five-year Plan about the National Economy and Social Development Made by the Central Committee of CCP. This plan clearly indicated the five important development concepts that contain innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing, in which sharing appeared for the first time. Chinese sharing economy market has a great potential for development, and it also will be the new energy of pushing the economic development. When the domestic sharing economy entered into the take –off period, many second-hand trading platforms emerged at the correct moment. However, the domestic second-hand market is not so mature. Due to the emergence of some second-hand trading application in recent years, online second-hand trading activities gradually get into the daily life, which gives the sharing economy with new historical meaning. Nevertheless, the research of second-hand trading market, especially second-hand trading platform remains rare. Therefore, this paper will choose Xianyu, the most representative application, by using the SWOT theory analysis, to add some useful material on researching domestic second-hand trading platform or application. The first chapter of this paper is literature review. The second chapter is to introduce Xianyu and SWOT theory, including the definition and function of Xianyu, and the content and significance of SWOT theory. The third chapter is the application of SWOT theory into the analysis the present Xianyu development situation, from the points of strength and weakness, and also the opportunity and threat that Xianyu may meet with in the future development. The forth chapter is the conclusion, and the writer gives some advices to Xianyu for its better development. This paper studies Xianyu through SWOT theory, and hope to bring Xianyu with theoretical support and practical suggestion on its development. And through its business model and innovative content, and from another perspective, the core of sharing economy is actually used goods economy (also second-hand economy), for all the sharing resources or basis is not totally new. But the used value of second-hand goods have been improved unprecedentedly, and also realized the reconfiguration. In addition to vehicles and idle houses, clothes, bags and jewelries are the most common but the easiest ignored used goods. However, the used goods have appeared actively in daily life and been given new value through daily transaction, which before the statement of sharing economy. Around the globe, the field of second-hand goods transaction is already blooming. In March 2016, Japanese C2C second-hand transaction platform Mercari announced that they received the investment of 75 million US dollars. In domestic China, second-hand economy, as one kind of sharing economy, also seized the opportunity and issued some second-hand trading applications. Some powerful applications have emerged, such as Xianyu from Alibaba, Zhuanzhan from 58 Tongcheng. There are also some less popular application, for example, Liequ, Liangyiqu and Yiyouyou. But the current data indicates that Xianyu is occupying the most market, which shows Xianyu is the representative second-hand trading application in China. As the predecessor of Taobao Second-hand, for backing on Alibaba and Alipay, Xianyu obtained a lot of strength such as customers resource, payment guarantee and transaction credit, which is helpful to improve the sales volumes. The most important practical significance of SWOT theory is that to provide evidences on making up marketing strategies. Based on SWOT theory, this paper will analyze Xianyu from external factors and internal factors respectively, and exploring the specific causes that impact the development of Xianyu. Chapter 1 Literature Review Xianyu is a short time but well-developed second-hand trading application. In China, not so many researches about Xianyu have been published, but some useful essays do exist. In foreign countries, there are many articles about second-hand trading. And the following is a brief review of the previous studies. 1.1 Related Studies Abroad In recent years, foreign studies on second-hand transaction mainly focused on its warranty system. For example, in 2011, Seyed Gholamreza Jalali Naini and Mahmood Shafiee propose a decision model to determine the optimal price and upgrade strategy of a warranted second-hand product to maximize the dealer’s expected profit. Then in 2013, Mahmood Shafiee and Stefanka Chukova pointed out the importance of carrying out warranty policy on second-hand transaction for enlarging profits during their Optimal Upgrade Strategy, Warranty Policy and Sale Price for Second-hand Products. In the same year, Mahmood Shafiee and Stefanka Chukova also published On the Investment in a Reliability Improvement Program for Warranted Second-hand Items. This article develops a stochastic cost-benefit model for investment made in reliability improvement programs for second-hand items sold with failure-free warranty. And a small number of studies that emphasize others factors, such as technology. For instance, in 2014, Michael Conrad and Oliver Raabe published an essay on Environmental Policy Monthly entitled Used Goods Trading Platform Can be Accessed through Smartphone, in which indicated that people can also find the locations of the nearest second-hand goods trading and marketing information through the GPS function of their smart phone. So far, SWOT theory has not been used in analyzing second-hand trading platform in foreign studies yet. 1.2 Related Studies in China As for the domestic researches about Xianyu, most of them are economic journal articles. Early in 2014, the establishing year of Xianyu, Wang Xiaoying published a paper on the Communication Information News named Taobao Launched Xianyu Application, Taking Advantages of Platform to Break into Second-hand Market, which is the earliest article related to Xianyu. The article mainly introduced the original functions and initial major competitors respectively. After around two years development, Xianyu has basically became the most successful second-hand trading platform in mainland China. In 2016, Wei Wei published an essay on Beijing Business Today Internet Weekly entitled the Benefits and Harms of Alibaba vigorously Developing Xianyu. In this study, it mainly analyzed the achievements that Xianyu has made in the past two years through lots of convincing data, but also revealed some problems that Xianyu met with during its development. In a word, it simply studied the strength and weakness of Xianyu, as well as the present opportunity and threat. This essay analyzed with the theory similar to SWOT, which can be a reference for future studies. The latest is study Xianyu: Trust Makes the Better Development of Sharing Economy in International Business Daily of E-commerce in 2016. In this article, it primarily analyzed the current economic environment, which touched the surface of using the O factor (opportunity) from SWOT theory. At the same time, it also gave some suggestions that could help Xianyu overcome some challenges, such as how to build a more perfect credit system. That is to say, it also related to the way that can deal with the T factor (threat) from SWOT theory. But so far SWOT theory has not been used to study Xianyu yet. 1.3 Innovative Points Based on the advantages of the former studies, this paper uses the formal and complete SWOT theory to analyze Xianyu. This paper will specifically explore the four factors—strength, weakness, opportunity and threat that have influence on the development of Xianyu. And also based on the result, it will put forward some suggestions that may help Xian strive for future improvement. Chapter 2 The Introduction of Xianyu and SWOT Analysis 2.1 The Definition of Xianyu Xianyu is a second-hand trading platform application client of Alibaba (for Android and iOS). Members just need to register on Taobao or Alipay account, without complicated processes of opening a shop, which can accomplish the one-key resell of bought goods in Taobao, upload second-hand goods by using the picture taken by users, online trading and so on. To get maximum exposure, more efficient selling path, and more competitive transportation price, users need to download entirely new Xianyu application, by that way, which can fasten the speed for idle goods to absorb the new owners. In addition, Xianyu application has been seamless linked to Taobao credit and payment system. That is to say, it can guarantee the safety of transaction to the greatest extent. 2.2 The Introduction of SWOT Analysis SWOT analysis is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and is a structured planning method that evaluates those four elements of a project or business venture. In SWOT analysis, strengths and weakness are internal factors, while opportunities and threats are external factors. A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a company, product, place, industry, or person. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Some authors credit SWOT to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies.  However, Humphrey himself did not claim the creation of SWOT, and the origins remain obscure. The degree to which the internal environment of the firm matches with the external environment is expressed by the concept of strategic fit. The SWOT analysis in social work practice framework is beneficial because it helps organizations decide whether or not an objective is obtainable and therefore enables organizations to set achievable goals, objectives, and steps to further the social change or community development effort. It enables organizers to take visions and produce practical and efficient outcomes that make long-lasting change, and it helps organizations gather meaningful information to maximize their potential. Completing a SWOT analysis is a useful process regarding the consideration of key organizational priorities, such as gender and cultural diversity and fundraising objectives. Chapter 3 The SWOT analysis of Xianyu Application 3.1 Strength 3.1.1 Alibaba Advantages 1. The Advantage of Scale    With the aid of significant market share of Taobao, scale advantage is the most obvious advantage. Xianyu has taken many peculiar advantages of Taobao since it was established. Relying on Taobao, Xianyu has achieved the accomplishment which is from millions to billionaire users. According to the 2016 Sharing Economy Report, the users of Xianyu have covered large national cities, in which tier one and tier two cities are more than 50%. These large cities of high proportion show that Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hangzhou have taken the lead in entering into sharing economy era. The top five cities with active users are respectively Shanghai (7.2%), Beijing (7%), Hangzhou (3.5%), Guangzhou (3.0%), and Shenzhen (2.7%). (Wang 3) 2. Safe and Guaranteed Transaction      Based on the big data of Taobao, Xianyu loaded Zhima credit, Taobao users level, Alipay identify certification and Sina weibo identification to form the user’s credit and evaluation system. The Xianyu evaluation system is different from Taobao. Taobao customer satisfaction department even laid off a specialized customer service team for Xianyu. 3. The Combination with Taobao Auction        Alibaba announced it will merge Taobao auction into Xianyu, that creating the largest national sharing economy platform. After combination, Xianyu and auction will make joint effort to explore multiple sharing economy including Xianyu auction, Xianyu second-hand trading and Xianyu second-hand vehicle. 4. The Help of Cainiaoguoguo          Cainiaoguoguo helps Xianyu to improve the experience of logistics. In recent days, Xianyu announced that it would carry out strategic cooperation with Cainiaoguoguo. Since that, the logistics of Xianyu second-hand goods would be fully accessed with Cainiaoguoguo. That is to say, the logistics could be transferred from offline to online, which means that the sending and receiving services will be totally optimized. At the same time, Xianyu and Cainiaoguoguo will provide the logistics subsidy up to 8 yuan per person to the users in 13cities. (Wang 1) 5. The Attention of Alibaba and Abundant Development Fund    In Alibaba, the ambition of Xianyu was reflected not only in its convincing facts, but also the great hope from top management. Analyzing from the financial quarter data, the financial statement of Alibaba is still good. However, the overall turnover growth of Alibaba has been slowed down since the second quarter in 2015. The slowdown of growth is the inevitable result of the rapid development of any business model, which Alibaba was not glad to accept. Therefore, it’s very important for Alibaba to seek for new growth. Alibaba need to set up and look for more profitable products or field, such as Xianyu second-hand transaction. (Wei 1)In some ways, Alibaba will provide powerful support to the development of  Xianyu. 6. The Function of One-key Resell    The new revision of Xianyu can help users resell the goods that bought in Taobao with one-key. After logining by Taobao account and clicking one-key resell button in Xianyu, all the goods bought in Taobao will be displayed. Using the one-key resell, you can easily fill in the information such as price, location and seller. Also, the way you buy in Taobao is just the same as in Xianyu. In a word, one-key resell is very easy and convenient to operate. 7. Great Corporate Image and Strength of Alibaba        Since the establishment, Alibaba has become the world’s largest retail trading platform within 20 years. Alibaba is very skilled in operating e-commerce. Xianyu, as one of the major businesses in Alibaba, has benefited from the unique developing advantages of Alibaba’s good enterprise image and strength. 8. Effectives Promotion Strategy      Alibaba makes full advantage of the massive daily pageviews from Taobao, and displays the advertisement on Taobao for Xianyu, which has achieved obvious result. 3.1.2 Non-Alibaba Advantages 1. Abundant Online and Offline Activities    Community, also named Yutang, is the main concept of Xianyu. The purpose of Yutang is to create a local community that gather the users and used goods. In communities, users not only offer a price to desired used goods, but also check others price. That can eliminate the information asymmetry of the price from buyers and sellers while increase interactivity and entertainment. (Ye 1)In addition, it is different from other second-hand trading platform, which only by paying so that your goods can be stick. In Xianyu, the second-hand goods are just like the post that can be topped up in the forum. In other words, the more detailed the contents are, the easier they are to be sold. According to the data from Xianyu, the interaction rate of users is 43%, which is to say for every 100 users 43 of them will interact with others, for example, leaving a message, clicking like button, making comment and chatting with sellers. All the interaction will bring Xianyu considerable turnover conversion rate. Through long-term data monitor, the user who did not join in interaction only has the turnover conversion rate about 7%. However, after having interaction, the rate will be raised 10 to 20 times. By the end of last year, more than 100 million users formed over one hundred thousand different second-hand trading community, whose result was that two hundreds thousands idle goods were sold everyday. As reported before, the present valuation is more than these billion with several years of development. In the end of March 2016, Xianyu announced that it would hold a thousand offline markets in the top 10 cities of high transaction rate within one year, and also invest over hundreds of millions for advanced development of Xianyu. 2. The 20th May National Auction Festival      Double 11 has been successfully created into the largest national shopping Carnival festival in China. At the same time, Xianyu launched 20th May auction festival, which is also an online festival as well as Double 11. The 20th May is the first half year, while Double 11 is in the second half year. By using the two-pronged approaches, customers can not only shop, but also auction in these two emotional festivals created by Alibaba. (Yang 78) 3. Multi-party Cooperation                  Xianyu cooperates with the local financial department to sell the state-owned assets by auction. After raising the Supervision and Management of the Transaction of  Enterprise State-owned Assets, some local financial departments have tried some new way on expanding the way of public transfer of state-owned assets. Ningbo Haishu District  State-owned Management Center made a public listing to transfer the possession of a batch of commercial real estate. Two similar auctions have been carried out and ended up in May 13th and July 5th, in which former with 10 sets of commercial housing and later with 20. According to data after the auction in July 5th, 18sets of commercial housing have been sold successfully from 20sets of auction commercial housing, with the turnover rate of 90%. Among the results, transaction premium rate is 14.36%, along with 15.1 thousands onlookers, 192 people subscribed to messages to remind, 147 registration people, 65 bidders and 310 times of biddings. (Wang 1)The above auctions have achieved great success with the help of Xianyu auction platform. The equality and inclusiveness of Xianyu auction is good for reducing black case work, while sufficient bidding improve the value maximization of auction goods. State-owned assets were resold by Xianyu auction platform, which makes government to be more efficient and fair in the disposal of stated –owned assets.  4. The Cooperation with China Certification & Inspection Group Luxury Identification Center              On July 15th, 2016, the cooperation launch ceremony of Xianyu auction and China Certification & Inspection Group Luxury Identification Center was held in Beijing. Both sides declared that they will carry out long-term exchange and cooperation in second-hand luxury goods circulation domain, and also make joint effort to purify the environment of idle luxury goods transaction. Xianyu indicated that it will incline to forge second-hand luxury goods auction into the important part of Xianyu auction platform. In order to better standardize the idle luxury transaction market, Xianyu and China Certification &Inspection Group Luxury Identification Center firstly created ‘4+3’ idle luxury goods transaction quality monitor system, which is a third party identification mechanism that is independent of users and Xianyu application. The system can provide strong guarantee for second-hand luxury goods, relying on great technical support from the authoritative third party. 5. The Emergence of New Function              In recent years, the sharing of others things have been traded in Xianyu, including some daily life skills and services, for example, renting house, teaching piano, walking the dog for others, writing spring couplets and so on. (Li 1)That shows Xianyu is very popular, and has some features that other platforms do not have. 6. The Launch of Xianyu Account                  Xianyu announced that it will launched Xanyu account, which is a new product that combined trust credential mechanism and community credential mechanism. Moreover, it can help users show their sharing credit condition, and makes the interaction and transaction more active. 3.2 Weakness 1. The Appearance of Fake Commodity      Alibaba has cracked down heavily on counterfeit goods, which has resulted in dismissal of many fake goods sellers. However, that action unexpectedly dragged down the second-hand trading platform Xianyu from itself. (Li, Xiao and Wang 1)Investigation discovered that the fake goods from Taobao heavily flooded into the low standard and less oversight second-hand trading market after Taobao spend a lot of money in building platform to take strong measures against fake products. The appearance of fake goods leads to the increase of the complaint rate in second-hand trading platform. Second-hand goods trading, as the new economic form, which is under flourishing development, is damaged seriously by the invasion of unscrupulous sellers, as well as Xianyu. Xianyu supervise the second-hand transaction of users by data measure, and build customer services intervention mechanism, but the mass trading information in everyday makes the data monitor department have no idea to deal with. The above situation lets the fake goods sellers make profits in disorder condition freely. The customer service from second-hand trading platform expressed that they feel very stressful because of the complaints received about the disputes of fake goods everyday, in which sellers and buyers stick to their own arguments. 2. High Complaint Rate and Low Satisfaction Rate      When opening the official weibo of Xianyu in Sina weibo Aixianyu, it’s very common to find that the comment box is full of complaints from users. Most comments were the disappointment and displeasure about the unhappy transaction and unfair result from Xianyu customer service department. Take the recent after-sale results as example, the consequence in favor of the buyers. Xianyu has very strict treatment for sellers, in which banning transaction is one of the most regular measures. However, as for buyers, Xianyu hasn’t published and carried out many punitive measures. Xianyu need to complete the judgment mechanism that remains neutral between the sellers and buyers. 3. The Intermingling of Normal Users and Bad Users        With the wide use of Xianyu application, there are move and move bad users in this second-hand trading application. Some bad users would like to ask women sellers that whether they have idle underwear. In addition, some users sell indescribable goods or services. Moreover, there are some low quality users, which speak rudely during transaction. Xianyu need to strengthen the monitoring and punishment for purifying the environment of Xianyu. 3.3 Opportunities 1. Certain and Supportive Policy Situation      The bulletin of the fifth Plenary Session of the Eighteenth Central Committee clearly pointed out that China would develop the sharing economy, which marked the sharing economy was formally listed into strategic planning of Chinese government and the communist party. The Government Work Report of 2016 put forward that promoting the development of sharing economy by institutional innovation. That not only showed the importance of sharing economy to the economy development of our country even whole world, but also reflected the recognition and support of sharing economy from national strategy, which drew broad public attention. Moreover, in March, 2016, the Guiding Opinion about Promoting the Green Consumption that formulated by National Development and Reform Commission and nine other departments was issued in public. The Guiding Opinions came forward that it will support the development of the sharing economy, encourage the effective use of personal idle resources, develop orderly about internet reserve carpooling, house rental, the exchange or transaction of used goods, and others. The Guiding Opinions also required that it will create the supervision method and perfect the credit system when developing the sharing economy. (You 1) 2. The Vast Size of China’s Sharing Economy            The market size of domestic sharing economy is entering into a new period of development. According to the Report of 2016 Sharing Economy Development, with the reference of 0.8% permeability that American idle goods market to total retail sales in 2013, we assume that the 2016 Chinese idle goods permeability is the same with 2013 Americans, the domestic China idle goods trading market size was estimated to achieve around 146.2 billion yuan. (Zhao 1) Considering that many years of idle goods lacked of accumulation channels, Chinese second-hand goods market has huge accumulation. In one word, the accumulation of domestic idle goods was added up three or four times in these years. If we take the domestic idle goods trading market as a blue sea whose scale was estimated over 400 billion yuan, the scale of idle goods far exceeds the travel sharing economy market. (Wei 1) Following the upgrade of Internet consumption and the popularity of sharing economy, the transaction demand of idle goods is blooming. The data analyst from Baixing.com expressed that the second-hand goods trading is very active between 2014 and 2015, with the 20% growth. In addition, on the basis of the data from Chinese E-commerce Research Center, hundreds and thousands of posts of second-hand goods were issued everyday in Ganji.com, in which the data add up at an annual average rate of 50%. And the user survey report from Taobao second-hand platform also reveals that over 98% of people have their own idle goods. 3. The Enhancing Awareness of Second-hand Goods Transaction    Owning to the change of consumption concept and the improvement of environmental awareness, and effect of the background of sharing economy, second-hand goods transaction, as a mature and national consumption pattern is gradually accepted by people, instead of misunderstanding and refusal. (Yang 1) Most of second-hand goods transactions were dealt at the price that is less than original price, but it would bring comfort to consumer on making up the cost of impulsive consumption. (Sun 66) 3.4 Threat 1. Fierce Market Competition      After the combination with Ganji.com, 58 Ganji did not perform well in the first half of 2016. The 58 Ganji financial report of 2016  first quarter shows that  the deficit continued  to widen, in which net profits and gross profits  all declined. Among that, one of the main reasons for the loss is the high operating expenses. Besides, the investments of other areas, even the O2O section, all increased the deficit of 58 Ganji. (Guo 1)The total loss of 58 Ganji in the first quarter reached 82.2 million US dollars. However, 58 Ganji CEO Yao Jingbo still stick to investing Zhuanzhuan in the case of continuing loss, which fully shows the significance of Zhuanzhuan. (Wei 1)The purpose that 58 Ganji invest heavily on Zhuanzhuan is to compete with Xianyu from the Alibaba. In addition to Alibaba and 58 Ganji, LeEco also pays much attention to idle goods transaction, and it invests Jiuai, a second-hand trading platform of 3C products and luxury goods. Jiuai has 300 thousands users after one month. Huawei announced that it will maintain the long-term strategic cooperation with Huishoubao which just received A round investment of 100millions yuan. 2. Fake Commodity and After-sale Problems      The drawbacks of second-hand goods trading market, such as return and exchange disputes, quality problems and rights protection, need to be standardized as soon as possible. The Chinese second-hand market has been well developed till now. However, the Chinese online second-hand goods transactions are mainly proceeding in C2C, which result in the weakness on normalization, safety and the rights protection after sales. (Huang 1)For instance, the upgrading of smart phone leads to more and more second-hand phones. On this occasion, the second-hand trading platform provide the most convenient path that customers can change the idle goods to money. But even if the customer takes payment against delivery, the quality of transaction goods still can’t be guaranteed, for the special characteristic of second-hand goods. The problem of rights protection is also an obvious disadvantage. For example, many buyers found that the goods they bought were different from seller’s description. After the useless negotiation with buyers, they turn to protecting their right but nowhere to go. Lack of rights protection place was very common in second-hand goods transaction. In addition to the above problems, fraudulent buying and selling, crib swap and payment risk are also the disadvantage of the second-hand goods transaction. Chapter 4 Suggestions for Xianyu Development and conclusion Xianyu has become the most successful second-hand trading platform in China. And the Chinese sharing economy is facing the new times of development. Therefore, Xianyu should try to seize the historic opportunity to blossom and strive to improve itself. Given this, this paper puts forward the following development suggestions. 1. The credit system Although Xianyu has established many methods to improve its credit system, there still exist many problems for credit. Some users can borrow other’s account to trade on the platform. When it comes to credit problem, Xianyu should make serious treatment about the related account. 2. The evaluation system On Xianyu’s official Weibo, it’s very easy to find that most of the complaints were from the seller. There are many trading cases show that the judge system of Xianyu was favored the buyer. For creating a fair trading environment, Xianyu should devote himself to be neutrality. 3. The trading environment More and more bad users are appeared in Xianyu in recent times, in which includes liar seller, liar buyer, and lady-killer users. Xianyu should increased efforts to strengthen investigation and punishment on purifying the trading environment. Since its independence from Taobao second-hand category on June 28, 2014, Xianyu has completed the leap from millions users to hundreds millions users, and become the biggest idle goods transaction community and sharing economy platform within two years. In the past 15 months, the turnover volume of Xianyu has been increased 15.6 times. And the total transaction goods are more than 170 millions. 270 thousands communities that based on local and interest have been established. I every day, over 200 thousands second-hand goods have been successful traded in Xianyu. (Xiong 1)Through the research of main body, Xianyu application has done a great job in second-hand trading market niche.
