Shaoxing lies in northern Zhejiang Province on the southern shore of the Hangzhou Bay. A famous ancient city south of the Yangtze River and the hometown of Lu Xun (1881-1936), China's great twentieth century writer, it was the capital of the State of Yue of the Spring and Autumn Period some two thousand years ago. Shaoxing is a town of rivers and canals, arch bridges and boats. Tourists will find a number of interesting places to visit in the city and its vicinity. King Yu Temple and Tomb(大禹陵) This site is located four kilometers southeast of Shaoxing. King Yu or the great Yu was believed to be the King of Xia, the legendary first Chinese dynasty of the twenty-second to sixteenth century B.C. He was remembered for his extraordinary efforts in flood control. The temple which was first built in the sixth century and has since been rebuilt on many occasions is composed of Meridian Gate (Wumen), Memorial Hall, and the Main Hall, all built on the same axis. Da Yu's statue stands inside the magnificent twenty-four-meter-high Main Hall, which is double-eaved with painted ridge poles and engraved beams. The Goulou Pavilion in front of meridian Gate houses a monument, also named Goulou, which is said to have been erected byKin g yu when he was taming the flood. In the Burial Stone Pavilion (Bianshiting) east of thetemple is a two-meter-high cone-shaped stone believed to have been used at King Yu'sfuneral. King Yu's to mb sits to the left of the temple. Lanting Pavilion(兰亭) Located at the foot of Lanzhou Hill fourteen kilometers southwest of Shaoxing, this pavilion is where the master calligrapher Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) wrote a famous essay about his meeting with some friends here in 353. While in high spirits, Wang Xizhi wrote an article called "Prologue to the Lanting Pavilion Collection". Eminent and praiseworthy in both calligraphy and literary talent, this article became a masterpiece in these two fields. WangXizhi was crowned as the "sage of calligraphers" from then on and this pavilion came to prominence from this event. Now, Orchid Pavilion has been regarded as the Mecca for calligraphers. The existing garden and buildings were rebuilt in 1548. A small stream, called Curved Stream (Qushui), runs through the secluded garden, with Liushang Pavilion on its bank.Ne arby, at Goose Pond (Echi), there is another pavilion which houses a stone tablet engraved with tw o Chinese characters: "E, Chi," said to be in Wang Xizhi's brush writing. Lu Xun's Former Residence鲁迅故里 The residence, a two-storied wooden structure in traditional style, is found at 208 Lu XunRoad i n Shaoxing. Lu Xun lived here until he went to study abroad. He received revolutionary soldiers a nd young students here from 1910 to 1912 when he returned home to teach in a localschool, and it was here that he wrote his first novel. To the east of the residence is the ThreeFlavor Study (Sanw eishuyu), a private school that Lu Xun attended during his childhood. East Lake东湖 East Lake is located in the east suburbs of Shaoxing city, three kilometers from the city center.Fea turing an elegant landscape of lakes and mountains and fantastic stones, it, together withthe Wes t Lake in Hangzhou and Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing, are known as the Three Famous Lakes inZhejiang Province. East Lake used to be a huge rocky hill. During the Han Dynasty, stoneman always went thereto q uarry stone. During the Sui, in order to build the great Wall, more stone were quarried from the mountain. After thousands of years of excavation, some parts of the mountain were hollowed, forming a unique scene. The scenic area consists of Taogong Cave, Xiantao Cave, Tingqiu Pavilion and other spots. "Taogong Dong" is located at the food of the hill with cliffs rising 50-60 meters on each side.Ridi ng on the lake in a boat, visitors can fully enjoy the wonderful scene. There are nine bridges on the lake and many pavilions dotted the banks. The topic I want to talk about is my hometown, which is known as Oriental Venice and home of notables. It’s also famous for wine, opera and calligraghy. Have you already know what my hometown is? Yes, It’s Shaoxing.I will introduce it in three aspects—Oriental Venice, Featured sites, City of Celebrities. First part, let’s see why we call it “Oriental Venice”. Shaoxing's web of rivers and lakes extends to most of its villages. Look at this picture. Houses stand on both banks of rivers and there are boats bustling on narrow waterways. It creates the special feeling of "small bridges crossing flowing water to arrive at prosperous homes." Because of the web of rivers and lakes, Wupeng boats and bridges are very common and useful in Shaoxing. Look ,sailing on rivers amid trees are Wupeng boats, known for the dark-painted cover over the mini-sized boats and paddled by men with both hands and foot. There are over 10,000 bridges of different shapes and exceptional features in Shaoxing, which is renowned as the museum of bridges. Of these bridges, the most famous one is Bazi Bridge, which shapes like a Chinese "八"--eight ,built in Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and claimed to be the first flyover in China. Second part, Featured sites of Shaoxing——Rice wine, Yue opera, Calligraphy. Let’s see Rice wine first. Shaoxing has a history of about 2,500 years making yellow-colored rice wine, which is made of rice. long ago, It was a custom in shaoxing that parents put the bottles of rice wine under the ground when a girl is born, and then they take out the wine and share with their friends on their daughter’s wedding day. It means that the win e have been kept under the ground for nearly eighteen years, and have been more and more mellow. That’s how the name “Nv er hong” came. Then I want to show you Yue opera. There are many kinds of operas in shaoxing which are very popular to local residents, and Y ue opera is the second largest opera in china, only after the Peking Opera. The most popular Yueju plays include " A Dream of Red Mansions" and "Butterfly Lovers”. I have prepared a part of " A Dream of Red Mansions" for you. So we say, Yue opera is famous for its expression of emotion, which is acted mainly by singing. The actors are comely and graceful while the performs are always vivid and moving. Now, let’s know more about Calligraphy. Calligraphy as a traditional art form of China has a very long history. Wang Xizhi is one of the renowned calligraphers in the history. His handwriting, known as the "style of wang" brings to mind the image of floating clouds in the sky, or a flying dragon on a rampage through space. Every time Wang Xizhi finished writing, he would wash the brush and ink slab in the pond in front of his house, gradually, the clear water turn to be ink-black. Through years of diligent and unremitting practice, Wang Xizhi became the most outstanding calligrapher in the history of Chinese calligraphy. Third part, Shaoxing is City of celebrities. Called "Home of Notables" by Mao Zedong, Shaoxing is well-known as the City of Celebrities. In ancient China, there were Y u the Great, the King of Yue State, and Wang Xizhi, known as the Sage of Calligraphy. In modern China, there are many celebrities, like Lu Xun, a famous novelist who has a very important status in cultural history of China, and Shaoxing is also where Qiu Jin, Cai Yuanpei, Zhou Enlai and other famous people lived or worked. The former residences of these celebrities and their families have become very popular attractions in Shaoxing. If you go to Shaoxing oneday, you should never miss these places. Ok, that’s all.
