大学英语应用文写作范例 大学英语应用文写作第五次讲义20110409 Practical English Writing (the Fifth Session) Step one: review paragraph writing from the perspective of sentences including topic sentence, supporting sentences and concluding sentences, restate topic sentences’ features (guidance and limitation)as well as paragraph characteristics( unity, coherence and smoothness) Step two: Introduce the process of making up paragraphs. How to Complain The initial thinking 1. Consumers sometimes buy a product which turns out to be a lemon. 2. They want to complain to the shop. 3. Many people, many ways to complain. 4. I find my ways of complaining more successful. The deeper thinking 1. Get all the sales slips and receipts and warranty cards ready. 2. Send all the “proves” and the complaints to the person in charge, better to the manager or the boss of the shop. 3. If no response from the person, go to the higher authority. 4. Accumulate accurate records and go right to the top, which usually works better than other measures suggested. A draft that followed: How to Complain I’m not just a consumer---I’m a victim. If I order a product, it is sure to arrive in the wrong color, size, or quantity. If I hire people to do repairs, they never arrive on the day scheduled. If I owe a bill, the computer is bound to overcharge me. Therefore, in self-defense, I have developed the following consumer’s guide to complaining effectively. The first step is getting organized. I save all sales slips and original boxes. Also, I keep a special file for warranty cards and appliance guarantees. This file does not prevent a product from falling apart the day after the guarantee runs out. One of the problems in our country is the shoddy workmanship that goes into many products. However, these facts give me the ammunition I need to make a complaint. I know the date of the purchase, the correct price( or service charge), where the item was purchased, and an exact description of the product, including model and serial numbers. When I compose my letter of complaint, I just stick to the facts. The next step is to send the compliant to the person who will get results quickly. My experience has shown that the president of a company is the best person to contact. I call the company to find out the president’s name and make sure I note the proper spelling. Then I write directly to that person, and I usually get prompt action. For example, the head of AMF arranged to replace my son’s ten-speed “lemon” when it fell apart piece by piece in less than a year. Another time, the president of a Philadelphia department store finally had a twenty-dollar overcharge on my bill corrected after three months of arguing with the computer had brought no results. If I get no response to a written complaint within ten days, I follow through with a personal telephone call. When I had a new bathtub installed a few years ago, the plumber left a gritty black substance on the bottom of the tub. No amount of scrubbing could remove it. I tried every cleanser on the supermarket shelf, but I still had a dirty tub. The plumber shrugged off my complaints and said to try Fantastik. The manufacturer never answered my letter. Finally, I made a personal phone call to the president of the firm. Within days a well-dressed executive showed up at my door. In a business suit, white shirt, striped tie, and rubber glovers, he cleaned the tub. Before he left, he scolded in an angry voice, “You didn’t have to call the president.” The point is, I did have to call the president. No one else cared enough to solve the problem. Therefore, my advice to consumers is to keep accurate records, and when you have complain, go right to the top. It has always worked for me. Step three: Composing Outlines for a Particular Topic Examples: Traveling Is More Than fun A. Traveling is Fun: 1. seeing new things 2. meeting new people 3. experiencing funny things 4. hearing funny things 5. getting a lot of laughter B. More than Fun: 1. learning new customs 2. knowing more about the way of life of the local people 3. opening the eyes 4. broadening the mind 5. emptying worries 6. improving health 7. refreshing the mind 8. seeing the various facets of life. Practices: Titles to be composed 1. Make Our Cities Greener 2. Why Do I Learn English 3. Modern Technology Makes Us Lazier 4. A True Friend 5. On Advertisements 6. Smoking Is Not All That Bad Expansion in this point Title 1: One Better Way to Cope with Diseases Man has been making every effort in working out new medicines for human diseases and spent staggering amounts of money setting up medicine manufacturing factories. But he seldom realizes that there is another way which works better in coping with human diseases. As one famous American doctor says that “ the most dreadful and frightening disease of man is the disease of the mind”, so the better way to deal with our diseases must start with the human mind. Indeed, almost all the diseases have troubled our human beings, and most of them have something to do with the mind. If we think that we are having a particular kind of disease, then, it is there to stay and grow and keeps troubling us. On the other hand, ….. Title 2: Companies Should Not Judge the Job Applicants Solely by Their Educational Certificates When evaluating a job applicant, most companies would place much weight on one’s educational certificate. Of course, one’s education or one’s educational certificate does tell something about the applicant. However, it is not the only means through which we can judge whether the applicant is qualified or not. From the applicant’s educational certificate we may know what kind of education he or she has received and the major area in which that person may do well. However, his other abilities or capabilities which may have great influence on his performance in doing a particular job are not possibly shown only with that piece of paper. There is enough evidence showing how invalid the certificate is evaluating the overall capabilities and qualities of an applicant rather than feeling satisfied with just the paper certificate. Title 3 Should We Encourage Private Cars in Big Cities? The present conditions of most large cities: the traffic problem, the pollution problem, etc. If we encourage private cars and allow more private cars to add to the crowdedness of big cities, then, we are actually trying to suffocate them and make things even worse. Therefore, we should restrict and curve the growth of private cars rather than encourage to let them squeeze into the already crowded big cities. Step Four: Understanding and Application 范文一 Directions: Widespread tobacco consumption has led to grave consequences, yet the tobacco companies still claim that they make a valuable contribution to the world economy. There is a discussion in a newspaper on the above two viewpoints. Write an essay to the newspaper 1) criticizing their view and 2) justify your stand. In your essay, make full use of the information provided in the pictures printed below. You should write about 200 words on ANSWER SHEET 2. 吸烟的危害 The majority of people would agree that cigarette smoking has caused serious problems. But the tobacco companies insist that they contribute greatly to the world economy by paying taxes to the government and employing hundreds of workers. Personally, I believe that cigarette production and consumption threatens to do more harm than good. Firstly, smoking is responsible for many fatal diseases such as lung cancer, heart diseases and so on. According to the survey, tobacco consumers account for about 20% of the world population, and among them, three million people die from smoking-related diseases every year. The fact that the output of tobacco production is reduced from 143.64 billion pounds in 1994 to 142 billion pounds in 1995 also suggests that people have come to realize the negative effects of smoking. Secondly, tobacco consumption is extremely wasteful of money. As is indicated in the pictures, 200 billion US dollars is lost due to smoking each year. Obviously, the total loss of money around the globe substantially exceeds the gain in the industry. In conclusion, as the economic development aims at making our life better, we cannot sacrifice our health for short-term financial benefits. If we have to spend more and more money providing medical services for those who suffer from smoking-related illnesses, the notion of promoting economy via tobacco production is not justifiable. It is high time that we fought for the total tobacco ban. 范文二 Directions: For this part, you are allowed 40 minutes to write a composition on the topic Aging of Population in China. You may refer to the chart below if necessary. You should write about 200 words and base your composition on the out-line (given in Chinese) below。 1. Aging of Population in China Many countries will experience aging populations in the next century because of declining birth and mortality rates. China will soon join their ranks. According to statistics, the aging of China's population will approach its peak by the middle of the next century, with the percentage of the people aged beyond 60 making up 27.4 percent of the total. That means one out of every four people will be elderly. As for the issue of aging, its situation has been growing increasingly severe in spite of the fact most people are still ignorant of the problems it brings about. Firstly, with families becoming smaller and living pace escalating, it is even graver for families to care for aged members adequately. Secondly, aging causes a relative decline in working force in that fewer people have to support the increasing aged people. Consequently, the productivity of the whole society is affected to some extent. Thirdly and most importantly, the aging of population in China resulted from the successful implementation of family planning has not been synchronized with national economic progress. The rapidity of the population's aging has made it more urgent for the adoption of countermeasures. Undoubtedly, the key is to build a solid economic foundation. Meanwhile, importance shall be attached to overall social progress by changing the backward situation in social security, welfare and service. What's more, family care and community services shall also be encouraged.
