Angel 9. Watch me go 10. What a foreign student should do in the USA 11. Protection of Environment 12. Prepare while it is still early 1 Travel (9月1---9月8日) Travel is beneficial to us in at least three ways. First, by traveling we can enjoy the beautiful scenery of different places. We can see with our own eyes many places which we can read about in books, and visit famous cities and scenic spots. Second, we will meet people with different interests and see strange and different things when we travel. We can get ideas of the conditions and customs of other people and we can taste different foods and local flavors if we like. In this way, we can understand how differently other people live. Third, travel will not only help us to gain knowledge of geography, culture and history, but will also help us keep healthy and make us less , narrow-mindedtravel benefits us both mentally and physically With all these advantages of travel, it is no wonder that travel has now become more popular than ever in China. 2 My hometown (9月9日---9月15日) My hometown is a small village located in the mountains. It is surrounded by lush hills and woods with a brook running through it. This is where children often frolic. The buildings in the village are old in appearance but peaceful. In the middle is a square, where there is a big tree, under which the elderly often meet to drink tea and chat. Everyone looks satisfied and happy, which is also true of other villagers. I love my hometown, and I hope it may be as beautiful as ever. 3. The Joy of Jogging 慢跑的乐趣(9月16---9月22日) I am fond of jogging every morning. The first step out brings me joy immediately. The fresh air, together with the rare tranquility(宁静), makes my jogging journey all the more pleasant and comfortable. At daybreak(黎明,拂晓), the glittering sunshine sprays upon me, making me feel warm. Along the way, many early risers say a friendly hello to me, which pleases me. Upon returning home, I am always filled with a placid(平 静)feeling and growing energy. Just because of this, I enjoy jogging. 2 4(A Glass of Milk---(美文欣赏)9月23日—29日 One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was hungry so he decided goods to beg for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don?t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point. =seriously Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were called inbaffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be to Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in for the study her rare disease. consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room. = stood up Dressed in his doctor?s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words... “Paid in full with a glass of milk.” (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently: “Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands.” 3 5 Changes in People’s Diet (9月30日—10月6日) In the past five years, great changes have been taking place in people?s diet. There is a general trend of decrease in the consumption(消耗)of grain, while there is an increase in the consumption of some high-energy food, such as milk and meat. Why are there changes in people?s diet? In my opinion, there are two major reasons: on (the) one hand, nowadays, people have more money to buy the food with better nutrition(营养), which is generally much more expensive than grain or vegetables. On the other hand, they now pay attention not only to the quantity but also the quality of their food. They have more knowledge on improving the nutritional value of food. From the above we can see that in the past five years, people?s living standard has been rising year by year. We can expect that there will be a more prosperous(繁 荣的,成功的) future waiting for us. 6 Forest Fires (10月7日----10月13日) Most forest fires are caused by human carelessness, negligence, or ignorance. Careless smokers are responsible for most of the fires each year. Many of these are started when cigarette butts(烟蒂) and matches are thrown from automobiles. Others are caused by hunters, fishermen, or wood workers who are careless with their smoking materials. Forests fires can also be caused by nature. The most important natural cause of fire is lightning. This accounts for 11 percent of forest fires around the world. According to some studies, in the tropical(热带的) areas, lightning causes a much higher percentage of fires than it does elsewhere. Forest fires have already brought about great losses to many nations. Therefore measures must be taken to prevent or control forest fires. account for: 占,解释、说明、是…原因 7. The Perils of TV Violence (10月14日---10月20日) Parents have begun to worry about the influence of TV violence on their children. The moment they turn on their TV set, they see nothing but fighting and killing. Studies by experts have shown that programs featuring violence have cast an ill the behavior of children, who act violence out in real life. As a result, effect on reports of juvenile(青少年的) delinquency(犯罪,违法行为) are not uncommon. Unless proper actions can be taken in time to regulate current TV programs, our society will some day be left in a state of violence. 4 8---10月21---10月27日 Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. One day the child asked God: "They tell me you are going to send me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?" God replied: "Among the many angels, I have chosen one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you." "But," said the child: "tell me here in Heaven I don„t do anything else but sing and smile. That„s what I need to be happy!" God said: "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel„s love and be happy." "And," said the child: "how am I going to be able to understand when people talk ?" to me, if I don„t know the language that men talk "That„s easy", said God: "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak." The child looked up at God saying: "And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?" God smiled at the child saying: "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray." The child said: "I„ve heard on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?" God put his arm around the child, saying: "Your angel will defend you - even if it means risking life!" The child looked sad, saying: "But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore." God hugged the child: "Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you." At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard. The child, in a hurry, asked softly: "Oh God, if I am about to leave now please tell me my Angel?s name!" God replied: "Your angel„s name is of no importance...you will simply call her 5 9.Watch me go 赤子情深-10月28日—11月7 My son Brendan cried his first day of school. Even Mrs. Phillips, a kind, soft-spoken master of the six-year-old mind, could not coax him to a seat. His eyes streamed, his nose ran and he clung to me like a snail on a strawberry. I plucked him off and escaped. It wasn't that Brendan didn't like school. He just didn't like being apart from me. We'd had some good times, he and I, in those preschool years. We played at the pool. We skated on quiet morning ice. We sampled half the treat tray at weekly neighborhood coffee parties. Now in Grade 1, Brendan was faced with five hours of wondering what I was doing with my day. Brendan always came home for lunch, the only one of his class not to eat at his desk. But once home, fed and hugged, a far-away look of longing would crease his gentle brow—he wanted to go back to school to play! So I walked him back, waited with him until he spotted someone he knew, then left. He told me once that he watched me until he couldn't see me anymore, so I always walked fast and never looked back. One day when I took Brendan back after lunch, he spied a friend, kissed me goodbye, and scampered right off. I went, feeling pleased for him, celebrating his new independence, his entry into the first-grade social loop. Then—I didn't know why—I glanced back. And there he was. The playground buzzed all around him, kids everywhere, and he stood, his chin tucked close, his body held small, his face intent but not sad, blowing me kisses. So brave, so unashamed, so completely loving, Brendan was watching me go. No book on mothering could have prepared me for that quick, raw glimpse into my child's soul. My mind leaped 15 years ahead to him packing boxes and his dog grown old and him saying, "Dry up, Mom. It's not like I'm leaving the country." In my mind I tore up the card every mother signs saying she'll let her child go when he's ready. I looked at my Brendan, his shirt tucked in, every button done up, his toes just turned in a bit, and I thought, "OK, you're six for me forever." With a smile I had to really dig for, I blew him a kiss, turned and walked away. 6 10. What a foreign student should do in the USA---11月8日--15 Studying in the United States, any foreign student is very likely to come upon something he finds it hard to adjust himself to, particularly as far as culture is concerned. He should, therefore, try all he can to get used to the American way of living with a view to yielding(出产、生产) more fruitful results. He should, first of all, have a good command of both spoken and written English, which will enable him to fully express himself. Next, he must expose himself as often as possible to native students so as to learn of the values Americans hold. As we know, confining oneself in an ivory tower will make it hard to communicate with others, thus resulting in more misunderstandings. Last but not least, he must stay open-minded, housing different viewpoints, dealing with people modestly. But in doing so, by no means should he downgrade his own culture. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” This is what a foreign student should do to study in the United States. 11. Protection of Environment----11月16---11月23日 Environmental protection has become a very serious problem. The population of the world is increasing so rapidly that the planet has become too crowded. The overuse of our natural resources has influenced ecological balance. Moreover, the smoke and harmful chemicals from factories have polluted our environment. If this trend continues, human life on the earth will be threatened. Great progress has been made in environmental protection. Governments of many countries have promulgated(颁布,公布) laws to protect the environment. Many factories have made great efforts to deal with various kinds of pollution. Still more measures should be taken to solve this problem. People should be further educated to realize the importance of environment. We should use modern methods to control population growth and we should learn to recycle our natural resources. If this is so, we are sure that in the future we will have a better and cleaner planet. 12 Prepare while it is still early----11月23日—11月30日 A little boy was out of breath when he got to the station. The train had just left. Someone said to him: “You should have run a little faster. You have just missed it.” “No,” the boy said; “ I ran as fast as I could. That was my highest speed. It wasn’t that I didn’t run fast. I just didn’t start early enough.” Many young people don’t work hard, and regret it later when the opportunity is gone. They only realize it when it is too late. 7 13( My Life ---12月1日---12月7日 By Bill Clinton I learned a lot from the stories my uncle, aunts and grandparents told me: that no one is perfect but most people are good; that people cannot be judged only by their worst or weakest moments; that harsh(严厉的) judgments can make hypocrites(伪君子) of us all; that a lot of life is just showing up(出现、露面) and hanging on(稍候片刻); that laughter is often the best, and sometimes the only response to pain. Perhaps most important, I learned that everyone has a story of dreams and nightmares, hope and heartache, love and loss, courage and fear, sacrifice(牺 牲) and selfishness. All my life I’ve been interested in other people’s stories. I’ve wanted to know them, understand them, and feel them. When I grew up and got into politics, I always felt the main points of my work was to give people a chance to have better stories. 14 Information in the Modern World---12月8日—15日 In the modern world, it is important to be well-informed. Success in many fields depends on getting the latest information. Failure in many fields and in policy-making often results from a lack of necessary information. Information is so essential that we call the current era(时代,时期) “The Information Age”. There are many means of getting information which enable us to keep up with what is going on in the world. We read newspapers and news magazines. For example, the typical daily newspaper carries local, national and international news, as well as sports, weather forecasts, and other features(特写). We listen to the news on the radio and obtain the latest information by watching television. Some radio and TV stations offer early morning news, late night news and weekly news programs. Undoubtedly, there are many other means through which we can acquire all sorts of information. Information becomes part of our modern life. It is beyond a shadow of doubt that in the future information will play an even more important role in enriching our life and in promoting social progress and human civilization. 13. The world---12月16日—23日 A man’s interest in the world is only the overflow from his interest in himself. When you are a child your vessel(容器) is not yet full; you care for nothing but your own affairs. When you grow up, your vessel overflows; you are a politician, a philosopher, or an explorer and adventurer. In old age the vessel drives up, there is no overflow; you are a child again. 一个人对于尘世的兴趣无非是他对于自我的兴趣的泛滥。年少的时候, 器小未盈,故而关心的只是一 己的私事。长大成人,也就器大满盈,或为政客,或为哲学家,或为探险者和冒险家。垂老之年器内枯竭, 再也无法泛滥;于是人复为童子。 8 14 My Father---12月23日—30日 Everyone has a father. My father is of middle height. He is stout and strong, with a severe look on his face and with keen expressive eyes. On first sight you may feel he is hard to approach. In fact he is very kind and considerate. I believe my father is a talented man. He is decisive and efficient in doing things. By his own talents and efforts, he has secured for the family a good social position and a comparatively rich life. People of all fields come to my house, and from them I have gained lots of valuable social experience and seen a lot of joys and sorrows of the world. But at home, he is a harsh parent. He has high expectations of me. When I am idling away my time, I can see that it hurts him deeply. When I am riding something great, such as writing a book, he is more than excited. With such a father, I always remind myself that I must go on and on, never give up. 15.Why is a sense of humor important?—2013年1月1—7日 A sense of humor, God’s greatest gift to mankind, is universally considered the most valuable personality. It is born within every person's heart~but has to be cultivated. A person without humor is just like a spring without flowers~or like a dish without seasoning,佐料,. In a sense~ your personality lies in your sense of humor. Humor can improve physical as well as mental well-being. It helps us bear our burdens~ lessen our tension~overcome our frustration. With a piece of joke~all our worries and sadness disappear like smoke~and we are full of vigor once again. Humor helps us live in harmony with others. It is unavoidable to have misunderstanding and tension with others during work and study. But humor can ease these problems quicker than angry words or quarrels. With it you can always keep on good terms with others. A sense of humor is really one of the keys to happiness. It gives fun and zest(热情) to life to make it worth living. 16. Volcanoes---2013年1月8日—15日 Haroun Tazieff, the Polish scientist, has spent his lifetime studying active volcanoes and deep caves in all parts of the world. In 1948, he went to Lake Kivu in the Congo to observe a new volcano which he later named Kituro. Tazieff was able to set up his camp very close to the volcano while it was erupting violently. Though he managed to take a number of brilliant photographs, he could not stay near the volcano for very long. He noticed that a river of liquid rock was coming towards him. It threatened to surround him completely, but Tazieff managed to escape just in time. He waited until the volcano became quiet and be was able to return two days later. This time, he managed to climb into the mouth of Kituro so that he could take photographs and measure temperatures. Tazieff has often risked his life in this way. He has been able to tell us more about active volcanoes than any man alive. 9
