The report on the CUMT students’ outlooks on love and marriage HU ya-hong Abstract: College students of different genders view the issue of love and marriage differently. By dispensing questionnaires and analyzing the statistics, the author conducted a sample survey among the undergraduate in China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) and found the different attitudes held by undergraduates of different genders in CUMT towards issues such as lovers` consumption, contradictions and premarital sex and so on. Key words: love; gender; difference 1.Introduction A survey was conducted on account of a widely accepted standpoint that a certain degree of distinctions was existing in people of different genders, including college students, when it comes to the issues of love and marriage. Firstly, four students were interviewed and consulted on what questions about love and marriage they attached importance to. Then 18 questions were chosen among all the 37 questions to make up a questionnaire (attachment1) which was typed for 250 pieces and later divided into eight piles, each of which was 25 pieces. Four piles were dispensed to the female of the four grades and the other four piles were dispensed to the male in the same method. 227 questionnaires were retrieved, of which 200 pieces were chosen randomly as samples. We analyzed the statistics and acquired the following findings. 2.Findings The great disparity in gender distribution in CUMT imposed a direct influence on the unbalanced proportion of love. It has been shown that 16% of male students and the same amount of female students are enjoying their first love; however, 25% of the female students are experiencing their second or even third love while only 5%of the male students have the opportunity to have more than one love chance. Having realized the reality, 25% of the male are reluctantly choose to be single at university. However, most single student showed a hope loving if there was someone proper. Most of the students of both genders claimed that the reason why they fell in love was to find a life or spirit coach fellow despite 26% of male get to love with the purpose of enriching life and eliminating the sense of lonely and 11% of female love for economic reasons out of attachment and comparison(张小勇,2012). That what action students of different genders would take when coming into contact with the one they love was extraordinary distinct. 74%male students would pursue or hint his lover while only 48%of female would do as this. More of them would pretend that nothing had happened. In other words, the male tended to be braver and the female, on the other hand, was more conservative. When it comes to the question that how often they prefer to meet each other, it was surprised to find that most of the couples in CUMT prefer to meet every two or three days rather than meet every day, which was extremely different from students in other universities(廖轶,李婧,李纪滨, 2007) . On the basis of this, male students in CUMT were more tolerant to a longer time for the next date. The outlooks on consumptions between lovers have changed a lot during the last two decades. It was traditionally held that it is the male that should pay for their date even the daily expenses of the female. With the germination of feminism, paying by women once become a fashion but soon was replaced the idea of gender equality. As a result of this thought, almost half of students in CUMT consider Dutch treatment as the best consumption method. For couples whose relationships were relatively stable, the one who had more money were expected to pay the bill. When facing contradictions, 30% of the male would compromise to his lover regardless of whose stand being more reasonable, while the corresponding figure of female is only half of the male, which, on the other hand, is a reflection of the increasingly risen of the female statues. Most of the students suggest that they should think twice before making a decision eventually. There is on doubt that study is the first priority in college life, so how do students in CUMT deal with the relationship between study and love? The survey indicated that most students, no matter the male or the female, would try to find equilibrium between the two issues. Meanwhile, there were still a large number of students, most of whom were later found to be single, expressed that they would value study rather than love. When there was no choice but to break up with each other, the male students were found to be more rational. They would still hold belief in love and would manage to be one of the normal friends of his ex-girlfriend. Even though they felt embarrassed when meeting their ex-girlfriend, they would try to get along well with them. Though most of the female expressed that they would also do as this, they said they would spare every effort to avoid meeting their ex-boyfriends and a small percentage of the female would complain about the bitter experience and would pretend to have never known their ex-boyfriends. With the inflow the western culture and the ideological emancipation, Chinese people, who were once regard as synonyms of conservatism, tend to becoming increasingly tolerant to the premarital sex. College students, as the first group to be exposed to these thoughts, were wrongly supposed to be sex-opened (郑夕春,2005) .However, it was indicated that only less than 30% male students in CUMT considered premarital sex phenomenon was normal, and 17% of them claimed it was never mind. 44% of male students promised that they would never have sex with their girlfriends before marriage and 11% of them showed their contempt to this phenomenon. It was also found from the fact that almost 80% of the females disapproved premarital sex phenomenon that the female showed a more conservative attitude towards premarital sex phenomenon. In the following interview, the geographical factor was discovered to have an impact on the attitude towards the phenomenon. “ It is a tradition in my hometown that the engaged couples live together. It is not until the female pregnant or even give birth to a male baby that she will be given a wedding, so the premarital sex phenomenon is very normal,” said a Fujian student majored in industrial design of CUMT. The north students, especially the female students considered that this kind of tradition was beyond imagination and they would never accept this. It was widely held that virgin complex was the privilege of the male, which, beyond the author’s expectation, was far from the reality. 70% of the female students highlighted the virgin of their boyfriends. It can be seen from the table below that once discovered that their boyfriend was not a virgin, 28% of the females would abandon their boyfriend without a hesitation and over 40% of them would feel bitter even though they maintained their relationship reluctantly. Compared with the female, half of the male did not take whether his girlfriend was a virgin in to consideration when developing a love relationship. Besides, 16% of them even claimed that they would comfort their girlfriends. When it comes to the question that what in their mind was the basis of marriage, 70% in total of the students took love as their first priority. At the same time, about 28% of them choose career or social statues instead, which was a reflection of the lack of education of how to set a true outlook of love and marriage. At the end of the survey, the students were asked whether they hoped to get marriage with their first lovers on campus. The difference between the two genders was not very remarkable. What should be highlighted was that the number of students thinking that it was impossible to have a good result with first lover reached 20%, which was extremely high compared with people lived several decades ago. 3.Conclusion By analyzing the result of the survey, a conclusion could be come to that genders do has a significant impact on the outlooks of love and marriage. In spite of genders, it can not be denied that all college students hold a bright vision of love. This is a transformation period in which the tradition concepts are gradually disappearing but the new concepts have not been established. During this period, the outlooks of love and marriage held by CUMT students have a trend of opening and diversification. The population of couples is increasing; students are more tolerant about the sex or cohabitation phenomenon; the motivation of loving, standard of spouse selection and the outlook of love and marriage tend to be diversified. On the one hand, campus love brings students more happiness and life experience. On the other hand, however, it imposes some negative influence to students, such as the arbitrariness of sex actions, the neglection one's studies and the endless profligacy. Therefore, during this period, the college students are expected to straighten out the motivation of loving, establish a correct standard of spouse selection, undertake responsibility of love and follow the morality of love, thereby reducing the uncivilisation and immoral in love and enhancing the stability of the love(佘翠,胃遥,2005). Meanwhile, it is high time that we took measures to help college students establish a true outlook on Love and marriage. It should be wide recognized that love is an important part of life, but not all of life. As college students, they should straighten the location of love, establish a correct outlook on life, love and marriage, as well as get through the great journey of life(刘峰, 2008)To put it further, college students should achieve personal values, make contribution to the society and promote the stability and development of society.
