The Teapot 茶壶TherewasaproudTeapot,proudofbeingmadeofporcelain,proudofitslongspoutanditsbroadhandle.Ithadsomethinginfrontofitandbehindit;thespoutwasinfront,andthehandlebehind,andthatwaswhatittalkedabout.Butitdidn'tmentionitslid,foritwascrackedanditwasrivetedandfullofdefects,andwedon'ttalkaboutourdefects-otherpeopledothat.Thecups,thecreampitcher,thesugarbowl-infact,thewholeteaservice-thoughtmuchmoreaboutthedefectsinthelidandtalkedmoreaboutitthanaboutthesoundhandleandthedistinguishedspout.TheTeapotknewthis."Iknowthem,"ittolditself."AndIalsoknowmyimperfections,andIrealizethatinthatveryknowledgeismyhumilityandmymodesty.Weallhavemanydefects,butthenwealsohavevirtues.Thecupshaveahandle,thesugarbowlhasalid,butofcourseIhaveboth,andonethingmore,onethingtheycanneverhave;Ihaveaspout,andthatmakesmethequeenoftheteatable.Thesugarbowlandthecreampitcherarepermittedtobeservingmaidsofdelicacies,butIamtheonewhogivesforth,theadviser.Ispreadblessingsabroadamongthirstymankind.InsideofmetheChineseleavesgiveflavortoboiling,tastelesswater."ThiswasthewaytheTeapottalkedinitsfreshyounglife.Itstoodonthetablethatwaspreparedforteaanditwasliftedupbythemostdelicatehand.Butthatmostdelicatehandwasveryawkward.TheTeapotwasdropped;thespoutbrokeoff,andthehandlebrokeoff;thelidisnotworthtalkingabout;enoughhasbeensaidaboutthat.TheTeapotlayinafaintonthefloor,whiletheboilingwaterranoutofit.Itwasagreatshockitgot,buttheworstthingofallwasthattheotherslaughedatit-andnotattheawkwardhand."I'llneverbeabletoforgetthat!"saidtheTeapot,whenlateronittalkedtoitselfaboutitspastlife."Theycalledmeaninvalid,andstoodmeinacorner,andthenextdaygavemetoawomanwhowasbeggingforfood.Ifellintopoverty,andwasspeechlessbothoutsideandinside,butasIstoodtheremybetterlifebegan.Oneisonethingandthenbecomesquiteanother.Theyputearthinme,andforaTeapotthat'sthesameasbeingburied,butinthatearththeyplantedaflowerbulb.Whoputitthereandgaveittome,Idon'tknow;butitwasplantedthere,asubstitutionfortheChineseleavesandtheboilingwater,thebrokenhandleandspout.Andthebulblayintheearth,insideofme,anditbecamemyheart,mylivingheart,athingIneverhadbefore.Therewaslifeinme;therewerepowerandmight;mypulsebeat.Thebulbputoutsprouts;thoughtsandfeelingsprangupandburstforthintoflower.Isawit,Iboreit,andIforgotmyselfinitsbeauty.Itisablessingtoforgetoneselfinothers!"Itdidn'tthankme,itdidn'teventhinkofme-everybodyadmireditandpraisedit.Itmademeveryhappy;howmuchmorehappyitmusthavemadeit!"OnedayIheardthemsayitdeservedabetterpot.Theybrokemeintwo-thatreallyhurt-andtheflowerwasputintoabetterpot;thentheythrewmeoutintotheyard,whereIlieasanoldpotsherd.ButIhavemymemory;thatIcanneverlose!"
