This essay effectively and insightfully develops the point of view that the
“conscience is very strong, and the role it plays in a person’s life affects them
greatly.” The writer demonstrates outstanding critical thinking by analyzing
the power of conscience in two literary characters who committed crimes and
later suffered when their “consciences took control.” The first literary work
examined is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter. The essay
describes how, unlike Hester Prynne who is “punished for her sin of adultery
and therefore has a clear conscience,” Dimmesdale’s “guilt eats away at him
causing him to become weaker over the years.” The latter character dies
“after confessing his guilt to the entire town,” demonstrating that “his
conscience was more powerful than even the will to live.” Next, the writer
describes Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth and the guilt she feels after the
“murder of a revered friend.” Though she constantly attempts to wash her
hands, Lady Macbeth never admits her guilt and is therefore unable to “clean
the blood off”; thus, she “retains her guilt until she dies.” The strength of
organization and focus allows this essay to demonstrate a depth of
development, clear coherence, and smooth progression of ideas. The use of
language in this response is skillful, and sentence variety is meaningful (“In
both these cases the conscience did not stop the characters from committing
the crimes. It wasn’t until after the crime had been completed that their
consciences took control. Still when it did they both suffered”). The essay
demonstrates clear and consistent mastery and receives a score of 6.
