SampleLocationsSamplesshallberandomlypositionedinsimulatedproductionloadsexceptatleastoneofthetensiletestsamplesshallbepositionedatalocationwhichexhibitedaconductivitywithin0.3%ofthehighestconductivityinaquenchuniformitytest.3.1.3EquipmentRe-QualificationWheneveranyqualifiedequipmentischangedorreworked,itshallbere-qualifiedunlessitisknownthatthechangeorreworkwillnothaveadetrimentaleffectuponthepropertiesofproducts.Re-qualificationofquenchfacilitiesshallincludeconformanceto4.3.3.2PyrometryShallconformtoAMS2750except(1)itisnotapplicabletofurnacesusedonlyforstressrelievingorfullannealingbelow825°F(441°C),(2)recordingsfrominstrumentsmaybestoredonmagneticoropticalmediaprovidingahardcopyisproducibleonrequest,and(3)incontinuousandsemi-continuousfurnaces,therequirementsapplicabletocontrols,instruments,andsensorsintheworking(soaking)zoneshallalsobeapplicabletotheheating(heat-up)zone.3.2.1ThetemperatureuniformitytestrequirementsofAMS2750shallbemodifiedasfollows:3.2.1.1LoadConditionInitialtestsshallbeperformedwithatypicalload.Subsequenttestsmaybeperformedwithanyloadornoload.Furnaceswhichhaveonlybeentestedwithaheavyload(inanticipationofonlyheattreatingheavyloads)(See8.2.9)shallnotbeusedtoheattreatlightloadsunlessloadsensorsandrecordinginstrumentsareemployedto(1)precludeanyportionoftheloadexceedingthemaximumspecifiedtemperatureonheat-upand(2)ensuresoakingwithinthespecifiedrangefortherequiredtime.3.2.1.2LoadSensorsWhenallproductionloadsareheavy(See8.2.9)andatemperatureuniformitytestloadisheavy,loadsensorsmaybeusedinlieuofuniformitytestsensors.3.2.1.3LoadedFurnacesDuringtheheat-upportionofuniformitytestsperformedonaloadedbatchfurnaceandduringtheperiodthataloadisintheheating(heat-up)zone(s)ofcontinuousandsemi-continuousfurnaces,thetemperatureoftheheatingmediummayexceedthemaximumoftherangebeingtestedprovidingthatthemetaltemperaturedoesnotexceedthatmaximum.CopyrightSAEInternationalProvidedbyIHSunderlicensewithSAELicensee=ParkerHannifin-Categories/5936628103NotforResale,01/25/201009:13:32MSTNoreproductionornetworkingpermittedwithoutlicensefromIHS--``,,``,````,,`,,,`,,,`,,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---SAEAMS2772E-4-3.2.1.4UniformityRequirementsDuringthetestperiod,thetemperatureofallworkingandtestsensorsintheworking(soaking)zoneshallbewithinthefollowingallowableranges(theserangessupersedethe±temperaturetolerancesspecifiedinAMS2750):3.2.1.4.150°F(28°C)rangeforfurnacesusedonlyforfullannealingat825°F(441°C)andhigher.Annealingtemperaturesshallbecontrolledsoastoprecludeanymaterialexceedingthelowestsolutionheattreatingtemperatureforthealloybeingannealed.3.2.1.4.1.1Forfurnacesusedonlyforfullannealingbelow825°F(441°C)andforstressrelieving,therearenotemperatureuniformityrequirements.3.2.1.4.230°F(17°C)rangeforfurnacesusedonlyforsolutionheattreatmentofthose6xxxalloysforwhichTable1specifiesarangeof30°F(17°C)degreesormore.3.2.1.4.320°F(11°C)rangeforfurnacesusedforsolutionheattreatmentof6xxxalloysforwhichTable1specifiesarangeoflessthan30°F(17°C).3.2.1.4.420°F(11°C)rangeforfurnacesusedforsolutionheattreatmentofotheralloysexcept10°F(6°C)rangeforfurnacesusedforsolutionheattreatmentof8090sheet.3.2.1.4.520°F(11°C)rangeforfurnacesusedforagingtreatments.3.2.1.4.620°F(11°C)rangeforfurnacesusedforprocessingtothe-O1temper.3.3HeatingMediaforSolutionHeatTreatmentShallbeair,protectiveatmosphere,combustedgases,moltensaltbath,orfluidizedbed.However,noprotectiveatmosphere,combustedgasorfluidizedbedenvironmentshallbeusedunlessithasbeenshownbytest(inaccordancewith4.4.1.1),onthealloy/formtobeheattreated,toyieldproductwhichisfreefromheattreatinducedporosity.Compositionofsaltbathsandfluidizedbedsshallbemaintainedtopreventattackoftheproduct.3.4PreparationforHeatTreatment3.4.1CleanlinessPriortoheattreating,productshallbefreefromsurfacecontaminantswhichcouldhaveadetrimentaleffectonthematerial.3.4.2RackingandSpacingDuringsolutionheattreatment,productshallbesupportedorhungandspacedtopermitflowoftheheatingandcoolingmediaoverallsurfacestoensurethatallproductwillmeetthespecifiedrequirements.Duringaging,productshallbesupportedorhungandspacedsothatitwillbeheatedandsoakedasrequiredtomeetthespecifiedrequirements.3.4.2.1Loadarrangementshallbevalidatedbyheattreatmentofasimilarlyarrangedload(See8.2.10)containingoneormoreappropriatelyplacedloadsensorswhichshowthatallproductwillbesoakedwithinthespecifiedtemperaturerangeforatimewhichhasbeenpreviouslyshown,bytensiletests,toproducethespecifiedproperties(notrequiredforloadarrangementswhichhavebeenpreviouslyvalidatedinaccordancewithMIL-H-6088,AMS-H-6088orapreviousissueofAMS2772).Writteninstructions,drawings,photographs,orotherillustrationsshallbeusedtoensureproperloadarrangements.CopyrightSAEInternationalProvidedbyIHSunderlicensewithSAELicensee=ParkerHannifin-Categories/5936628103NotforResale,01/25/201009:13:32MSTNoreproductionornetworkingpermittedwithoutlicensefromIHS--``,,``,````,,`,,,`,,,`,,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---SAEAMS2772E-5-3.4.2.2ThinForgingsRandomracking(notnested)orlayeringofforgings,1-inch(25-mm)andunderinthicknessispermissiblefor(1)solutionheattreating(providingquenchingisbyimmersion),(2)aging,and(3)annealing,providingproductsorackedhasbeendemonstratedbytesttomeetthespecifiedrequirements.Layerthicknessshallnotexceedthreeinches(76mm)anddistancebetweenlayersshallbeatleastthreeinches(76mm)(notrequiredforloadarrangementswhichhavebeenpreviouslyvalidatedinaccordancewithMIL-H-6088,AMS-H-6088,orapreviousissueofAMS2772).3.5Temperatures3.5.1Furnacetemperaturesshallbecontrolledsoastoensurethatthemetaltemperaturedoesnotexceedthemaximumoftherange.3.5.1.1Whenaloadischargedintoabatchfurnacewhoseindicatedtemperatureishigherthanthemaximumofthespecifiedrange,arecordingloadsensor,incontactwiththethinnestmaterialontheoutsideoftheload,shallbeusedtoverifythatthemetaltemperaturedidnotexceedthemaximumoftherange.3.6SolutionHeatTreatment3.6.1Productshallbesoaked,inaccordancewith3.6.2,withinthetemperaturerangespecifiedinTable1andquenchedasspecifiedin3.6.3.Quenchingdirectlyfromafurnaceorsaltbathisrequired.Extrusionpressquenching(see8.2.6)androllingmillquenching(see8.2.7)arenotpermittedbyAMS2772.3.6.2Soaking3.6.2.1StartSoakingtimeshallstartwhenthereadingsofallloadsensorsindicatethatthetemperatureoftheloadhasreachedtheminimumoftherequiredtemperaturerange.Alternatively,determinationthatthetemperatureoftheloadhasreachedtheminimumoftherequiredtemperaturerange(startofsoakingtime)maybebasedonreadingsoffurnaceinstrumentsprovidingthelagbetweentheirreadingsandloadtemperaturehasbeendeterminedinasimilarlyarrangedload.3.6.2.2DurationTheloadshallbemaintainedwithintherequiredtemperaturerangeforatimewhichhasbeenpreviouslyshown,bytensiletests,toproducethespecifiedproperties(notrequiredforsoakingtimeswhichhavebeenpreviouslyvalidatedinaccordancewithMIL-H-6088,AMS-H-6088orapreviousissueofAMS2772).RecommendedsoakingtimesarelistedinTable2.3.6.2.3Duringsoakinginasemi-continuousairfurnace,adropintemperatureindicatedbyfurnaceinstrument(s)ispermissibleprovidingthat:3.6.2.3.1Thetemperatureindicatedbyanyinstrumentdoesnotdropmorethan20°F(11°C)belowtheminimumofthespecifiedrange.3.6.2.3.2Timebelowtheminimumofthespecifiedrangedoesnotexceedfiveminutes.3.6.2.3.3Soakingiscontinuedfornotlessthan10minutesafterrecoverytotheminimumofthesolutionheattreatmenttemperaturerangebeforequenching.3.6.2.3.4Iffurnacetemperaturedoesnotdropmorethan20°F(11°C)belowtheminimumofthespecifiedrange,butdoesnotrecovertotheminimumofthespecifiedtemperaturerangewithinfiveminutes,thetotalsoakingtimewithinthespecifiedrangeshallbeincreased;iflessthanonehourwasrequired,itshallbeincreasedbyone-halfhour;ifonehourormorewasrequired,itshallbeincreasedbyonehour.CopyrightSAEInternationalProvidedbyIHSunderlicensewithSAELicensee=ParkerHannifin-Categories/5936628103NotforResale,01/25/201009:13:32MSTNoreproductionornetworkingpermittedwithoutlicensefromIHS--``,,``,````,,`,,,`,,,`,,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---SAEAMS2772E-6-3.6.3Quenching(See4.3,8.2.6,and8.2.7)2xxxand7xxxalloyforgingsshallbequenchedbyimmersion.Quenchingofotherformsof2xxxand7xxxalloysandallformsofotheralloysshallbebyimmersion,sprayor,inasuitablechamber,byairblast.3.6.3.1QuenchantForimmersionandsprayquenchingshallbewateroranaqueoussolutionofaresidualstress/distortionreducingadditivesuchaspolymer.3.6.3.2QuenchConditionsQuenchantvolume,velocity,distributionandagitation(ofquenchantand/orproduct)shallbesufficienttoensurethatallproductswillmeetspecifiedrequirementsafteraging.Quenchanttemperatureshallconformto3.6.3.5.Theadditive,concentrationandspecifictemperatureusedforeachloadshallbesupportedbyanalysisofdataverifyingthatthespecifiedpropertiesareachievedafteraging(notrequiredforadditives/concentrations/temperaturespreviouslyvalidinaccordancewithAMS-H-6088,MIL-H-6088,AMS2770orapreviousissueofAMS2772).3.6.3.3QuenchDelayForimmersionquenchingshallconformtoTable3.Forairblastandsprayquenching,maximumallowablequenchdelaysshallbeestablishedbasedontestsoftensilepropertiesand,for2xxxand7xxxsheet,wireandextrusionunder0.250inches(6.35mm)thick,testsforsusceptibilitytointer-granularcorrosion(See4.4.1.2).3.6.3.4RinsingProductheattreatedinsaltbathfurnacesandproductquenchedinanaqueoussolutionofpolymershallberinsedasnecessarytoensurethatitwillbefreefromcorrosionanddetrimentalforeignmaterials3.6.3.5QuenchantTemperature3.6.3.5.1ForgingsandImpactExtrusions3.6.3.5.1.1Quenchant-Water,withorwithoutaNon-PolymerAdditiveRecommendedquenchanttemperaturerangesare140to180°F(60to82°C)for2014and2024alloysand140to160°F(60to71°C)forotheralloysexcept,whenfinaltemperofT41orT61temperisspecified,immersionquenchinginboilingwaterisrequired.3.6.3.5.1.2Quenchant-WaterwithaPolymerAdditiveQuenchanttemperatureshallnotexceed130°F(54°C)atthecompletionofthequench.3.6.3.5.2ImmersionQuenchingofOtherFormsof2xxxand7xxxAlloysIfthequenchantiswateroranaqueoussolutionofanon-polymeradditive,quenchanttemperatureshallnotexceed100°F(38°C)atthestartofquenchand110°F(43°C)atthecompletionofthequench(See3.6.3.7).Ifthequenchantisanaqueoussolutionofpolymer,quenchanttemperatureshallnotexceed130°F(54°C)atthecompletionofthequench.3.6.3.5.3SprayQuenching
