Radios & Televisions About fifty years ago, when television first came out, people thought that radio was no longer useful. Television has both sounds and pictures. It is much more real and interesting to watch television than to listen to the radio. However, fifty years later radio is still very popular and it will be here for a long time. One reason is that we don’t need to see pictures when we listen to music on the radio. In fact, listening with your eyes closed is the best way to listen to a piece of music. You can think yourself on a sandy beach or up high on a mountain. In other words, you can create or make your own picture. Moreover, while listening to the radio, you don’t have to take your eyes off your work. For example, you can listen to the radio and drive at the same time. Or you can read a book and listen to the radio. Television, on the other hand, doesn’t have this advantage. A radio is much smaller than a television. You can take a radio anywhere and turn it on anytime you want. In a quiet place you can use headphones to listen to the news or music on the radio. In this way you won’t disturb anybody. C. 网络时代 Teleworking Have you heard about teleworking? It means working from a distance, in other words, not working in an office but working at home. You use the computer and the Internet to keep in touch with your boss, but instead of being tired of an office work, you can work in your own comfortable room. The idea sounds nice, doesn’t it? You can do all your research on the World Wide Web, and send in all your work by e-mail. Well, that’s exactly what my boss said to me two years ago. “Jenny, how would you like to work at home?” he said. At first everything was great. My job was editing articles for a university, and so I spent most of my time sitting in front of a monitor and typing busily at the keyboard. Through the Internet I had access to all the information I could possibly want. It was really good being at home, too. I didn’t have to waste any time traveling, and I could stop and make myself a cup of coffee or a sandwich if I wanted to –- I was quite free and happy. But then things started to change. I put on weight, because I wasn’t going out as much as I had before. I stopped wearing smart dresses, because a jogging suit (运动衣) and trainers were so much more comfortable. My friends stopped telephoning because I didn’t meet them on the bus or in the café. I knew something had to change. I needed to get back out into the world. So I telephoned my boss, “Please let me come back to the office –- I’m going mad on my own!” And then goodness, he did. If you want my personal opinion, teleworking may become popular in the future… but not for me! 1. What does the word “teleworking” in the passage mean? 2. What was Jenny’s job? 3. How did Jenny feel when the boss told her to work at home at first? 4. Jenny had more time to enjoy herself when working at home, didn’t she? 5. Why did Jenny put on weight? 6. What’s your opinion about “teleworking”? Online Shopping There are many online food shopping sites. Things l___1___ CDs, books, and DVDs sell well online. Buying dried and canned food online is easier. A person can buy this kind of food on the Internet and then buy fruits and vegetables at a store or a market. D. 额外阅读 1. A new report says more than 50 percent of middle school students in China aren’t getting enough sleep. Experts say that middle school children need at least nine hours of sleep a night to be well rested. But many students sleep for only six or seven hours a day. Teachers also find that children are often sleepy or yawning (打哈欠) in the classroom. This is a terrible problem, they say. The cause of students’ lack of sleep may be the following. Activities such as after-school sports, watching television, and using the computer often take away hours from sleep time. Some families don’t go to bed as early as they need to. Parents, who stay up quite late to get everything done, often keep their children up too late as well. Too much homework shortens the students’ sleep time, too. Many students say that they have to spend lots of time at night finishing their homework. Now teachers have begun to realize that getting enough sleep is important to students. Here are some tips for healthy sleep: · Set a reasonable (合理的) bedtime. Most middle school children should go to bed by 9 pm. Some children who want more sleep might need an earlier bedtime. · Relax before bedtime. Children should not be joining in intense (易兴奋的) activities, such as watching television, or using the computer, right before they go to bed. Taking a bath or reading a story can help children fall asleep more easily. · Don’t eat food high in sugar in the late afternoon and evening. A cup of hot milk will help you fall asleep. · Children should go to bed at the same time every night, including weekends. ( )1. The answer will most p 1 be the TV! Young people would certainly choose the TV, but you will be surprised to find out that the older o 2 will at least hesitate about choosing it. Why is this? Are the books not as interesting as they used to be? Is it that the world has changed so much in recent years that our habits are not the same anymore? Nowadays many people have no interest in literature(文学). This may be a possible explanation. Another r 3 might be the change of lifestyle (生活方式). We are more l 4 to visit a club or a bar to relax ourselves after a long day’s work, rather than read a book in the comfort of our own homes. People are more outgoing than they used to be. All the stress (压力) of work makes us want a quick relaxing means. Perhaps , most of us do not have the patience to read anymore. It is much s 5 to turn on the TV and watch the latest news around the world than read 19th century literature! You are the master of all the TV programs. The only disadvantage is that TV will never p 7 you with all the facts that a book can do. TV is much more superficial (肤浅的) than books, even if it does get you relaxed in just a moment! E. 根据下列提示就“我对使用因特网的看法”写6-8句话。 · What are your views on using the Internet? · Why do you think so?
