I remember it as a surprisingly happy and bright place. It was almost 11 years ago, but I can recall much about my experience there. After many years of having to deal with people asking me what happened to my hands, I got fairly used to it. What I couldn’t bear was those who did not ask. They thought they were being polite, but just stared. In fact it’s really a very simple story. September. At my cottage. When I was 4. Those are the three facts that set the base for the story. Typically, when people ask, I tell them the story my mother gives about her rushing to pull me from the campfire and quickly putting me into the water, calling 911 and my grandma, who was a nurse, and then rushing me off to hospital. My father had to wait behind with my 2-year-old brother. This is the logical story to give because it provides the most information, and makes the most sense. Immediately after the accident, the questions never seemed to end. At first, it was very stressful for me to have to explain to everyone what had happened, because I was a young and shy girl who just wanted to keep her burned hands to herself. But after some time, I gradually realized that I was over-thinking it and that it really wasn’t such a big deal. Now going into my fourth year of high school. I never hesitate to tell people my story whether they ask or stare. I do it because I’ve realized that I don’t if I have to explain what happened a million more times it’s a part of my life, so there’s no sense in feeling uncomfortable with others over it. The whole experience has made me a lot less shy and more courageous. 31. What used to make the writer unhappy? A. People’s pity for her B. People’s being polite to her C. People’s staring at her hands D. People’s questions about her hands 32. Who sent the writer to the hospital? A. Her grandpa B. Her mother C. Her father D. Her brother 33. How does the author feel now when she has to tell her story? A. Cautious B. Shy C. Proud D. Relaxed B In New York, students in 18 schools participate in a program(计划)called We Future Cycle. Started by Anna Giordano in 2014, it teaches kids to reduce food waste. Lunch areas in theses schools are equipped with a special bow, where kids can put their unwanted drinks, fruits, and even untouched sandwiches. The things in the box are available for any student that wants them. Whatever remains at the end of the day is donated to the food bank. Giordano says this box has helped reduce the number of waste bags from an average of 22 to just 2! To help kids develop similar habits at home, the non-profit has created courses to educate families about the importance of making use of waste. They also urge parents to have open conversations with their kids about food choices. But, as we’re all aware, kids aren’t the only ones that waste food. Adults are equally bad, if not worse! To prevent that, Josh Treuhaft founded Salvage Supperclub in 2014. The occasionally organized dinners promise people a tasty multi-course meal for only $50 USD per person. It is also a plan to save waste because the delicious food is made from vegetables that are past their prime(全盛时期)and, therefore, headed for the dustbin. The other catch? Customers have to eat their meals inside a dumpster (大型垃圾 装卸车)! The place of course, is totally clean. In addition to helping people rethink their actions, Trcuhaft also helps them do good by donating part of the profits to non-profit organizations devoted to fighting against food waste. 34. What can we know from the text? A. Students are more generous B. We Future Cycle is very successful C. Food is wasted seriously in all schools D. Students show no interest in We Future Cycle 35. Why do people eat in a dumpster? A. It is nicer and cleaner B. It is environmentally friendly C. It can save much money and energy D. It can help them think abut food waste problem 36. What is the purpose of the text? A. To explain reasons to share food B. To show the importance of saving food C. To introduce programs of reducing food waste D. To call on people to take up a popular lifestyle C Rising water temperature and the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in our oceans are killing our beautiful coral reefs at a surprising speed. Add the current extreme weather pattern, and things look even worse. So what makes coral so sensitive? Although it may be hard to believe, corals are not plants, but animals. The colorful reefs we admire so much happen to be skeletons(骨 骼) given up by hundreds of thousands of polyps(珊瑚虫). To survive, these animals live with an algae(海藻). The coral polyps give the algae a home and then the algae provide the polyps with their bright color and food. But the rising water temperatures are causing the coral polyps to reject their algae friends. As result, the corals are not only losing their food source but also their beautiful colors. The disappearance of the reefs does more than make humans lose the change to admire the beautiful coral reefs. It removes a natural barrier which protects shorelines from storms and also fewer living places for fish and other sea animals. The began by selecting certain coral species that seems to have got used to the changing ocean conditions. Then they made them even more adaptable to warmer water. Once ready, the researchers plan to transplant the coral into Hawaii’s Kaneohe Bay. This sounds simple, but they are not sure that it will work because coral is sensitive to touch and also develops very slowly and infrequently. Also, past attempts to remove coral have failed because they were either eaten by fish or died to disease. Thought there exist these dangers, researchers believe there’s no other choice to prevent the reefs from disappearing. Tom Oliver, a scientist says, “The question is not they do it, it’s can they do it fast enough?” 37. Which fact might surprise people according to the text? A. Corals come in different colors B. Corals are not plants but animals C. Corals are sensitive to water temperatures D. Coral reefs can protect the coast from storms 38. What make coral lose its color? A. The failure to raise them B. Too much sunshine C. The polluted sea water D. The loss of algae friends 39. What does the underlined word “transplant” in Paragraph 6 probably mean? A. Remove B. Admire C. Export D. Exchange 40. What is mainly talked about in the text? A. Corals are of great use to people B. People are trying to prevent corals disappearing C. Human activities are affecting the growth of corals D.
