051.订购信 Dear Sir or Madam, As I am planning to take the National Entrance Test of English for MA/MS Candidates (NETEM) , I have decided to place an order of some NETEM books with due consideration of the good reputation of your bookstore and the high quality of your books. Firstly, please give me particular accounts as regards names, authors, publishing houses and prices of these books. Secondly, I also need to know the terms of payment and after-sell service. Thirdly, I wonder if it is convenient for you to deliver these books by EMS to the headquarters of Beijing New Oriental School by September 1, 2012.I have arranged to pay for the service. I would like to express my gratitude for your kind consideration of my requests. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours sincerely, Li Ming 052.求学信 Dear Sir or Madam, I am a Chinese student who wishes to apply for admission into your prestigious university. My plan is to start my course next term, and I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to provide me with certain essential information. First, what qualifications do I need to follow a course of study at your university? I have already had a bachelor’s degree from Peking University, but I wonder if there are any further academic requirements. Second, how much are the tuition fees? Although I intend to be self-supporting, I would be interested to hear if there are any scholarships available for international students. Third, what is the situation regarding accommodation? I look forward to your reply, and to attending your esteemed institution. Yours sincerely, Li Ming 053.投诉信 Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to express/air dissatisfaction/disappointment/concern regarding accommodation. I would prefer to move into a single room next semester, as I find the present sharing arrangement inconvenient. I must explain that the reason for my dissatisfaction is my roommate’s inconsiderate behavior. For one thing, his friends are constantly visiting him; for another, he regularly holds noisy parties. To solve this problem/surmount this difficulty/improve this situation/crack this hard nut, I hope to draw the attention of the authorities concerned. I am sure you will agree that the only solution for me is to move into a room of my own. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could find a single room for me, preferably not in the same building but as near to the college campus as possible. Yours sincerely, Li Ming 054.求职信 Dear Mr. Byron, I am a senior from the Department of Business Administration. I am writing the letter in purpose of applying for your recently advertised position for a staff member. I am sure that I am qualified for it. First, enclosed with this letter is my resume, which further details my previous academic qualifications and work experience. Second, not only do my qualifications and experience make me a perfect candidate for it, my cheerful personality is well suited to working as a staff member. Last, my hobbies include sports and music. Finally, I would appreciate it if you could grant me an interview so that I could explain in more details in person the relevance of my educational background and working experiences. Yours sincerely, Li Ming 055.感谢信 Dear Xiaoqiang, I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude. I am referring to that unfortunate accident the other day, when I was knocked off my bike by a taxi. If it had not been for your timely assistance in giving me first aid, I fear that the consequences might have been much more serious. Everyone agrees that it was your quick-witted response in that emergency that has led to this satisfactory outcome. Although nowadays people in mounting numbers talk about the need to be unselfish, we see very few people practice what they preach. If there were more people like you, this world would be a much nicer place. Yours sincerely, Li Ming 056.邀请信 Dear Xiaobao, I will hold a dinner party at my house on April 1, 2013 to celebrate Mr. Guo Jing’s marriage with Miss Huang Rong. As you are a close friend of ours, we would very much like you to participate in the celebration and share our joy. The occasion will start at seven o’clock in the evening, with the showing of their wedding ceremony. This will be followed by a dinner party. At around ten, we will hold a small musical soiree, at which a band will perform some works by Bach and Strauss. If you do not have any prior appointment on April 1, we look forward to the pleasure of your company. Yours sincerely, Li Ming 057.推荐信 Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to you to recommend one of my best friends, Zhou Botong, for this post. With his outstanding leadership and cheerful personality, he was elected chairperson of the Student Union of Fudan University several times. Busy as he was, he completed his major, teenage psychology, with an outstanding school record. Upon graduation he was assigned to be a teacher in Fudan Middle School. What is more, he loves his job and enjoys working with children. This has won him great popularity among his students. Therefore, I do not hesitate to recommend him as an ideal candidate for the post you advertised. I am sure you will make a wise decision in hiring him. Yours truly, Li Ming 058.备忘录/报告 Date: January 20, 2013 To: Percy Shelley, Vice President From: Li Ming, President Subject: Computer Training of the Staff As we discussed earlier this week, I agree with you that our firm is faced up with problem of the high rate of computer illiteracy of the staff. We need to make up a plan for training our employees in the new field. I would like you to design our own in-house computer-training program. We had better classify the employees and put them through the program in turn. Write up a brief proposal, describing what you think the program should cover. Assume the class runs four hours a week for ten weeks. Also, assume people have no prior computer knowledge or any formal course work in computer science. 059.告示 Chinese Speaking Contest January 20, 2013 To improve students’ ability to speak Chinese and enrich after-class activities, the Students’ Union of Department of Chinese Language and Literature is organizing a school-wide Chinese speaking contest on Saturday next week (27 January) at the Students’ Auditorium. Those who are interested in taking part in it may sign up with the monitor of their classes before Tuesday next week. Five professors will be invited to be judges. The first six winners will be given awards. Everybody is welcome to be present at the contest. The Students’ Union Department of Chinese Language and Literature 079.环境保护类:空气污染与限行 It is shown in the drawing that a young man wearing a mask is staring at the huge characters “PM 2.5” in the polluted sky. In the flourishing and prosperous metropolis with a great many cars, air pollution is extremely serious. And below the portrayal, there is a caption which reads: “air quality”. Motor vehicle exhaust is the primary cause for the notoriously poor air quality for cities like Beijing, Jakarta and Delhi. Today, whether in Bangkok, Beijing or Berlin, the roads of the world’s most populous urban areas are flooded with more motor vehicles than at any other time in history. Specifically, there are now more than five million cars in Beijing, with over 1,000 new cars being registered every day. Shanghai, Guangzhou and other big cities, all home to over three million automobiles, have also witnessed strong growth in vehicle sales. Due to the poorer quality of air, the rates of asthma and other lung-related ailments are considerably higher in large cities than in rural areas. In my view, the restrictions on vehicle driving are not only justified but, indeed, can be extremely beneficial for the densely populated cities in China and elsewhere. To begin with, imposing such measures in major cities can help alleviate air pollution and thus promote a cleaner environment. What is more, improved weather conditions and more blue-sky days can also help boost the locals’ general health as well as psychological well-being. 080.教育文化类:保护传统 The cartoon shows that a tourist carrying a backpack is visiting a certain so-called historical capital. To his astonishment, instead of the characteristic historical sites and traditional Chinese architectures, it is filled with monotonous apartment complexes, visually plain office towers and megamalls lacking in artistic value. The caption reads “Should we preserve the historical architectures?” While some would argue that “holding onto the past” is costly or unnecessary, the preservation of historic architectures should be made a priority in China. Even with no other reason, China’s historic buildings still should be cherished for their rich cultural and educational value. For instance, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace are all treasures of the past, which make up the Chinese people’s identity and serve as a window into China’s history. Another factor that they merit preservation is the aesthetic value they provide to many cities. In other words, historic buildings tend to be elaborate and beautiful, with intricately detailed ornamentation, vibrant tones and complex yet harmonious colors. Every time an ancient structure is demolished, a part of history is lost forever. Unfortunately, it is too late to protect the thousands of hutongs in Beijing or Shanghai’s old city. However, by making the preservation of historic architectures a high priority, there is still hope to hold onto the countless remaining treasures of Chinese history. 081.社会热点类:社会公德 As is depicted in the picture, a kind-hearted young girl is helping a blind person to cross the crosswalk. The caption indicates: “social morality”. The picture above illustrates that social morality and traditional virtues, like the sunshine on our shoulders, make us smile and stronger. Social morality can give us support no matter how dark the world around us becomes. Renowned for many traditional virtues, the Chinese people have been practicing social morality throughout history. And as a matter of fact, people of many different cultures regard honoring public morality as the most sublime human act. It is my view that the best way to practice social morality is to help people who are unfortunate and in need of help. We should always be ready to offer a hand to those who are in trouble, no matter whether they are family members or complete strangers. Only by doing so can we help to make the world a better place. 082.社会热点类:诚信 As is revealed in the cartoon, using a magnifying glass, an aged man is examining a so-called honest dealer who is selling counterfeit branded leather shoes. The dealer asked the man rudely, “Old man, what are you looking for?” The customer answered patiently, “I’m looking for honesty.” In contrast with the negative consequences of lying and deception, practicing honesty is in our best interest. First of all, one negative repercussion of dishonesty is that it can become a huge drain on one’s time and energy. Those who get caught in weaving a web of lies will soon find that they have little time or energy for anything else. Apart from depleting our time and energy, being dishonest can also have serious influence on our mental health. Those who falsify their resumes in order to obtain employment, for example, may worry constantly about the possibility of losing their jobs if the boss were to detect the truth. On the whole, while it may be impossible to eliminate deceit that exists around us, each of us can practice truthfulness ourselves. Considering the adverse effects that lying can exert, it is apparent that honesty is our only viable option. 083.社会热点类:自立 As is depicted in the cartoon, while the aged parents are exerting all their efforts to push a baby carriage, their grown-up son is lying in the carriage, comfortably drinking from a baby bottle. The poor mother is asking in despair, “When is the end of taking care of our son?” The caption indicates: “Self- independence”. While many young men choose to be NEET (Not currently engaged in Education, Employment or Training), as the cartoon illustrated above, it is still crucial for us to earn self-independence. One reason is that it can improve our efficiency and productivity. In our everyday life, there will always be occasions when we are unable to obtain outside assistance and have to depend on our own knowledge and skills to solve problems. Under these circumstances, those who trust their own abilities and judgment will find creative solutions, enabling them to be more productive and successful. In addition to fostering greater efficiency in our daily life, self-dependence can also help make life more meaningful. Since self-reliant individuals possess confidence in their own abilities, they also tend to be more willing to try new things. This kind of do-it-yourself activities can yield a sense of satisfaction and pride, and add excitement to an otherwise mundane life. In the final analysis, I maintain that it is imperative for young people to depend on themselves. Since self-reliance can boost our efficiency and add meaning to our lives, let’s enjoy being self-independent! 084.社会热点类:心理健康 As is shown in the caricature, wearing a hospital gown and holding a transfusion support an astonished patient is running away from a horrible open mouth with gleaming fangs. Inside the giant mouth, four Chinese characters appear: 心理问题. The picture implies that people are afraid of mental problems as if they are scary monsters. But below the cartoon, there is a caption which says: “Attention should be given to psychological health”. As the living standard improves, people are paying more attention to their health conditions. It is true that physical factors affect one’s health a great deal, but at the same time, we should not neglect our mental health. In the past, people loathed to be related with mental problems, yet scientific research has proven that anger, suspicion and anxiety do great harm to our body, while being optimistic can cure certain diseases. We have also heard that a great many optimistic people live much longer than doctors predicted after they have been diagnosed incurable diseases. Therefore, we should attach importance to our mental health, and if we have psychological problems, we should face them bravely and resolve them as soon as possible. In my point of view, mental health is as important as physical health to us, and to make people healthier both physically and mentally, there is no other way than adopting a positive attitude toward life. 085.人生哲理类:机遇 As is shown in the picture, lying on the ground, a young man is loafing all day away. Without doing anything, he is just dreaming of “opportunity”. But what accounts for the opportunities in our lives? This question is likely to elicit a variety of responses. To begin with, except mere chance, most opportunities stem from our own attitude and mindset. Opportunities are always around us, waiting for those with courage and enterprise to seize them. What is more, many of our opportunities are the result of hard work and perseverance. A perfect example is the Olympic athletes. Many Olympians are born with superior physiques, but without years of rigorous training, none of them would have realized their potential or have had the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games. To sum up, it is my view that the number of opportunities each of us has depends on a combination of factors, including chance, our mindset, and perseverance. Only people who are well-prepared can make full use of opportunities and achieve success. 086.人生哲理类:雄心与行动 The drawing reveals two individuals react completely differently to a delicious ripe apple on a tree. Imagining he is eating the tasty fruit, one just stands still in the shade and dreaming, while the other immediately runs to find a ladder and plucks it from the stem, letting it yield, to the utmost, its burden of sweetness at his lips. The caption indicates that: “Why not take action?” The aim of the portrayal is to show us that action speaks louder than anything else. Ambition is nothing without action. Take Leonardo Da Vinci for example. In his life he created many brilliant works of art and invented many machines that surpassed the technology of his time, such as the helicopter. If he had only been an ambitious man, he would not have left us with those nice artifacts. Yet, Da Vinci was a man of action who could not sit still, so he produced a dazzling legacy of painting and inventions. Generally speaking, ambition and action are both essential in determining whether we flourish or fall behind. The former gives us the drive and direction to move forward, while the latter enables us to implement our vision. Just as the famous British philosopher John Locke said, “The actions of men are the best interpreters of their thoughts.” 087.人生哲理类:责任 As is shown in the picture, two persons wearing diving suits are deep in the water. While one of them finds it difficult to breathe without the oxygen tank, the other is swimming around freely and comfortably. On the oxygen tank, there are the clear Chinese characters “责任”. The implied message of the picture is that abandoning one’s responsibility is like giving up one’s oxygen tank. Everyone lives with responsibilities. As human beings, we should be responsible, for ourselves, for others, and for our society. First and foremost, individuals must be responsible for themselves. We must take responsibility for our own safety, wellbeing and career. In addition to taking care of ourselves, there are good reasons for us to be responsible for others. Those who are overly self-concerned and dismiss all responsibilities will ultimately pay the price for being so selfish. Last but not least, aside from being accountable to ourselves and others, it is crucial that we act responsibly towards our society. For example, we should do everything to protect our environment, while littering, spitting and energy wasting are examples of irresponsible actions. Generally speaking, to be responsible we should take care of ourselves, our fellow people, and the society we live in. 088.人生哲理类:心态 As is depicted in the cartoon, two persons react totally differently in front of a steep cliff. Shocked by the seemingly insurmountable difficulty, the man on the right believes he would fall into the abyss, whereas the person on the left, being confident and optimistic, is sure that he could leap easily to the other side. And below the drawing, there is a caption which says: “mindset”. Keeping a good state of mind is important no matter under what circumstances. For one thing, it can help one foster friendly interpersonal relationship. Instead of regarding colleagues or classmates as rivals or opponents, one can cooperate with them and benefit from them. One will try to keep pace with others or surpass them by working harder rather than complain or get lost in jealousy. For another, people with good state of mind will examine their disappointments and frustrations in the right perspective. Realizing that failure is the mother of success, one would survive the temporary blows and get prepared for the bright future. Thus, we need not only a strong body but also a good state of mind in order to face the pressures and challenges in the modern society. While most people are aware of the importance of the former, quite a few people fail to recognize the significance of the latter.
