洗衣妇读后感 On Maternal Love of the Washwoman As we know, love is the most beautiful word in the world. Love makes our life become more and more beautiful. Love may be the wind, making us feel cool. Love may be a cup of tea, making the farm in our life wet. Love may be the sun, making us feel warm. A world without love is just like a hell without sunshine. There are many kinds of love. Parents' love makes children grow in warmth. Friends' love makes our lives more colorful. Lovers' love makes you understand happiness. In a word, no body can live without love, just like no fish can live without water. This term we have learned a prose named The Washwoman which is written by Issac Bashevish Singer. After learning this prose I have many feelings and thoughts. The washwoman was a Gentile working for a Jewish family among many others; she was in her seventies but did her work and did it well despite the hardships of laundering – having no faucet, the washwoman had to go to a pump and get water, she also carried the large bundle of clothes on her back for a walk that lasted about an hour and a half; with these and other hardships, the woman had a lot to endure for her low-paying job. The washwoman had to show strength in many ways, some examples being still working hard at her age, still loving her son despite the fact he disowned her, and keeping her alive in order to return all the clothes. But the washwoman had a son who was wealthy and refused to have anything to do with her because he was ashamed of her. Also, the boy who was telling the story, his mother hoped that he wouldn't grow up and treat her the way the Washwoman was treated by her son. One day the son was married. It seemed that he had made a good match. The wedding took place in a church. The son had not invited the old mother to his wedding, but she went to the church and waited at the steps to see her son lead the “young lady” to the altar. When the woman ill. Someone told her san that her mother was ill, but he didn’t come to see her mother instead he had contributed money for a coffin and for a funeral. As soon as she saw the rescue workers, she shouted out: “please save my daughter, I have stay here for two days! I don’t have any strength.” Her seven year old daughter stays in her arms safely. The rescue workers couldn’t believe their eyes and ears. They moved the stones do their best. After seeing this though televisions and newspapers many people cried. More and more people come to save them. They hoped the mother and her little daughter can hold more. They rescued them from morning till afternoon. At last, a tall man catches the little girl. But the girl was too long time to stay there without oxygen. Her mother soon asked weather her daughter still alive. The rescue workers cried loudly yes. They said they would send the little girl to hospital at once. Then sent her to the hospital too after save her out. They knew that if she knew her daughter has died she must lost her mind to live. After hearing her daughter is still alive, the mother smiled tired. Soon she was send to the hospital. This is maternal love which is the greatest love in the world. In fact, every mother has this power. My mother is unexceptional. I am the only child in my family. I grew up under my parents’ love happily and healthy. Now I am a college student. Because it takes more than an hour from my home to school. So I live in the school dormitory. Every time when I go home I usually told my parents to eat dinner in time don’t wait for me. But they will wait for me no matter how late I get home every time. I was moved deeply. Also if there is something good to eat, mother will not eat any, she will leave it to me and always says she doesn’t like to eat. But mother I want to say who doesn’t like to eat something delicious? You just want me to eat more! There are many things that I am moved by my mother. I want to say: “mother, I love you!” There is a kind of love in the world. It is the most selfishless and can give you 3 everything you want. It is the greatest love and all your life starts here. It is the most gracious and gives you all without any remuneration. It is the most purest, natural and sincere love without any blemishes. It is maternal love! 4
