Christmas Traditions There are many ways to celebrate Christmas, and some British people like to go on holiday, go out for lunch to a restaurant, or spend the day with friends. But most people's idea of a traditional Christmas involves spending a few days with their family - sometimes their extended family. The day is the most exciting for the children. They may have spent weeks or even months dreaming of the presents they want most. Since the beginning of December, they may have opened their advent calendars, finding a new festive picture, chocolate, or small gift, to count down each day until 25th December. On Christmas Eve, they hang up stockings, ready to be filled with presents by Santa Claus. Often a thank you gift of a mince pie and a glass of sherry will be left, as well as a carrot for those hungry reindeer. Christmas Day itself will be spent eating lots of goodies, opening presents from loved ones, which have been waiting under the Christmas tree, and for most adults, drinking plenty of booze. A Christmas lunch of roast turkey with all the trimmings is the main event, complete with crackers, and paper party hats. The meal will finish off with Christmas pudding, a steamed fruit pudding. For some, a church service, or the Queen's speech on television will be part of the family custom. For most, the afternoon and evening will be spent playing board games, or perhaps watching a family film on TV. After the excitement of the big day, most families are happy to spend Boxing Day quietly enjoying their presents, and eating the Christmas leftovers, for example a turkey curry. Then we can all forget about Christmas until next year… well until next September. 题目:1.Most people's idea of a traditional Christmas involves: 文本: A) go on holiday B) go to a restaurant for lunch C) spend the day with friends D) spend a few days with their family 你的答案: D 正确答案: D 得分: 15.00 题目:2.On Christmas Eve, what do children hang up to receive presents from Santa Claus? 文本: A) Christmas trees B) Stockings C) Small boxes D) Shoes 你的答案: B 正确答案: B 得分: 15.00 题目:3.On Christmas Day, for most adults, what do they usually drink? 文本: A) booze B) water C) drinks without alcohol D) milk 你的答案: A 正确答案: A 得分: 15.00 题目:4.What is NOT the typical food for the Christmas lunch? 文本: A) roast turkey B) Christmas pudding C) steamed fruit pudding D) Ice-creams 你的答案: D 正确答案: D 得分: 15.00 2.Passage two exercise: Direction: Listen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true and F for false. Merry Christmas from the China Team This week we are talking directly to you to tell you all about our Christmas and New Year Plans. Firstly, let's hear from Alison, the editor of the China Team, who is having a family Christmas followed by a wild New Year: "For New Year, I'm taking a trip to Hamburg in Germany. I am going to a New Year's party in a restaurant; there'll be a gourmet menu with champagne and then dancing and fireworks at midnight outside. In Germany they like to let off fireworks that bang loudly," says Alison. Emily, our broadcast assistant, is looking forward to some traditional Christmas fare with her family after exchanging presents. "Before dinner we give each other presents around the Christmas tree. For dinner we eat all the traditional food such as turkey, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and Christmas pudding; and after dinner we play party games, eat chocolates, sweets, nuts, and drink wine," says Emily. But what about our Chinese colleagues, how do they celebrate at this time of year? Producer Helen has a baby boy, who can complicate Christmas. "I'm spending this Christmas with my family at my home in London. It's going to be my son Leonard's second Christmas, so we have made a bit of effort putting up a few baby-friendly decorations in our flat. "We've got a few pots of poinsettias which are big red flowers with a very Christmas feel, and there are no prickly needles, so Leonard is safe from causing disasters," says Helen. As for our writer Diarmuid, he is flying to France to visit his family there for a gastronomic yuletide celebration. "Having Christmas in France means there will be a fantastic variety of delicious French wines to enjoy. Who knows? I might even bring some back for the team," he says. 题目:1.Alison, the editor is taking a trip to Hamburg in Germany. 文本: 你的答案: T 正确答案: T 得分: 8.00 题目:2.Emily, our broadcast assistant, is looking forward to some traditional Christmas fare with her family. 文本: 你的答案: T 正确答案: T 得分: 8.00 题目:3.For Emily, after dinner, they give each other presents around the Christmas tree. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 8.00 题目:4.Producer Helen has a baby girl, who can complicate Christmas. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 8.00 题目:5.Our writer Diarmuid is flying to France to visit his family there. 文本: 你的答案: T 正确答案: T 得分: 8.00 听力任务 1.Exercise 1: Listening for Specific Facts: Direction: Listen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true, F for false. Have Students Been Tricked? 1st April is a day to be careful, or you could easily get tricked by someone. It's April Fool's Day, a day when people traditionally like to try to make a fool of someone else and laugh at them. There are lots of theories surrounding the origins of the day, but one explanation is connected with the change in the calendar in the 16th century, which meant that 1st April was no longer the beginning of the year. Those who still celebrated the New Year on 1st April were called fools. So what kind of pranks do people play on April Fool's Day? Well, there are lots of simple tricks that you can play on your friends. For example, you could wear a black sweater and pull a piece of white thread through it, so that people try to pull it off. You could change the time on someone's alarm clock so that they're late for work. Or glue a coin to the floor and see how many people try to pick it up. All these are small-scale practical jokes which you might play on one other person or a few people. But there's also a tradition of large companies attempting to fool a lot of people. For example a burger restaurant once claimed that they were introducing a left-handed burger! In particular, the media often try to make people believe something which is not true. Newspapers publish some ludicrous stories every year, although some of them are actually true. It's entertaining to try to guess which stories are true and which are fake. In the April Fool's stories, they often include a clue to the fact that it's a joke. For example the name of an 'expert' quoted in the article might be an anagram of 'April Fool'. Radio and television programs have often fooled many people by broadcasting reports which are untrue. One program announced the invention of an amazing new weight-loss product - water which contained minus calories! And one of the most famous hoaxes ever was broadcast by the BBC itself in 1957! A very serious news program called Panorama reported on the poor spaghetti harvest in Switzerland, and showed pictures of farmers picking spaghetti from trees! Hundreds of people were taken in and wrote to the BBC asking how to grow their own spaghetti. 题目:1.In the 16th century, 1st January was the beginning of the year. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 6.00 题目:2.Actually in western countries, very few people play jokes on April Fool's Day. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 6.00 题目:3.There's also a tradition of large companies attempting to fool a lot of people on April Fool's Day. 文本: 你的答案: T 正确答案: T 得分: 6.00 题目:4.The media never tries to make people believe something which is not true. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 6.00 题目:5.Radio and television programs have also fooled many people by broadcasting reports which are untrue. 文本: 你的答案: T 正确答案: T 得分: 6.00 2.Exercise 2: Focus-listening: Direction: Listen to the passage and fill in the blanks with the missing information There are lots of 1. surrounding the origins of the day, but one explanation is connected with the change in the 2. in the 16th century, which meant that 1st April was no longer the beginning of the year. An American Creation Father's Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother's Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time. The origins of the celebration are American and it was inspired by the actions of a man named William Smart. He was a veteran of the US Civil War and his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. He raised six children alone without remarrying, which was undoubtedly unusual back in those days. His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realized when she was an adult what her father had sacrificed for his children. It was in the early 1900s and she was actually at church one day, listening to a sermon on Mother's Day. She thought there should also be a Father's Day celebration. And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonora's father's death. Britain took the idea of Father's Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s. Father's Day is never quite such the big commercial event that Mother's Day is, probably because it hasn't been in existence for so long. But what do British people do for Father's Day? Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have a nice message in it saying what a great Dad their father is. Some people do buy presents as well. Popular gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks because these are things that Dads can always use even if they don't want them. In the run-up to Father's Day, or indeed Mother's Day, there will be adverts on the TV giving us ideas of CDs or gadgets we can buy. Card shops will be full of mugs or pens and similar merchandise with ‘World's Greatest Dad' written on them. Some families might do things together to celebrate Father's Day like going for a meal. As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest - make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car and mow the lawn to make him feel really appreciated. 题目:1.Which one has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time, Father's Day or Mother's Day? _____________ 文本: 你的答案: Mother's Day 正确答案: Mother's Day 得分: 20.00 题目:2.Which day is Father's Day? Christmas is the biggest festival in Britain and is celebrated on 25th December. The four weeks before Christmas are called Advent, and are traditionally celebrated in churches by lighting a candle each Sunday during Advent. Nowadays, many people in Britain are not very religious, but they still celebrate Christmas. But watch out - the preparations begin long before Advent. In fact as early as September or October, you start to see signs that Christmas is on the way. The first places to tell us that we should be thinking about Christmas are the shops. People in Britain spend on average over ?600 (around $1000) per person on Christmas every year, and the shops encourage people to spend more and more. Shops put up Christmas decorations and play cheesy Christmas songs or carols; and some shop workers wear Christmas hats. Some big shops on Regent Street and Oxford Street in London create wonderful displays in their windows with moving characters, falling snow, colorful lights and music. So what do people buy in preparation for Christmas? Well, Christmas decorations; Christmas cards to send to your friends and relatives; presents for your loved ones and wrapping paper to wrap them up with. And of course food! Apart from the special Christmas dinner of roast turkey or goose, people buy lots of chocolates, nuts and snacks for everyone to enjoy. But the children are the most excited that Christmas is coming. They start making lists of presents they would like, and give them to their parents, or send them to Santa Claus. In December, they can also open their Advent calendars. Advent calendars are a way of counting down to Christmas. They have a window to open for every day from 1st - 24th December (Christmas Eve). A basic Advent calendar has a Christmassy picture behind each window, but the children's favourite is usually a chocolate Advent calendar, with a chocolate for every day of the month. It's a great build up to the overeating that goes on at Christmas! 你的答案: decorations 正确答案: decorations 得分: 20.00 题目:2.Advent calendars are a way of _______ down to Christmas. 文本: 你的答案: counting 正确答案: counting 得分: 20.00
