TheThreeGorgesoftheYangtzeRiver TheYangtzeRiver TheYangtze,risingintheglaciersandsnow--coveredmountainsofthe"RoofoftheWorld",theQinghai-TibetanPlateau,andfedbyhundredsoftributaries,wanderseastwardacrossthemainlandofchina.ItmakesanincessantrushintotheEastChinaSea.TheenormousinexhaustiblehydroelectricresourcesoftheYangtze,producingnowastegases,nowastewater,orwasteresidues,issuperiortooilfieldsandcoalfieldsandthereforeconsideredthe"King"ofallenergiescapableofgeneratinghugeprofitswithaminimuminput. Fromitssourcetoitsestuary,theYangtzeRivermeandersover6,300kilometers. TheThreeGorges TheThreeGorges,themostspectacularsectionoftheYangtzeRiver,arefilledwithbreathtakingsceneries.WithBaidiCity,FengjieinChongqingMunicipalitytothewestendandNanjinPassofYichangintheHubeiprovinceattheeast,theThreeGorges,Qutang,WuandXiling,total192kminlength.TheQutangGorge,knownforitsmagnificence,isonly8kmlong.WuGorge,44kmlong,isfamedforitsdeepvalleyandquietbeauty.Amongthetwelvepeaks,theGoddessPeakisthemostexquisite.XilingGorge,extending66kminlengthandfullofturbulentcurrentsandwhirlpools,isoneofthemostdangerousshoals. AlongtheThreeGorges,therearebroadvalleys,wheretheclimateismildandthesoilfertile.ThesevalleysarethemaincultivatedareasintheThreeGorges,wherethecountytownsofWushan,BadongandZiguiarelocated.Intheautumnwhentheorangeripens,itssweetfragrancedriftstotheboatsontheriver. Inadditiontotheirscenicbeauty,theThreeGorgesarerichinwaterresources.TheyarethemostidealsectionoftheYangtzeforbuildinglargewaterconservancyprojectsforthecomprehensiveexploitationoftheriver.Thedeepgorgesandsteepmountainsonthebanksoftheriverpresentsuperabundantpotentialsforpowergeneration.TheThreeGorgesProjectthatisbeingunderconstructedwilleffectivelycontrolthetorrentialflowontheupperreachesandfreethemiddleandlowerreachesfromthethreatofflood.Hugepowergeneratorswillsendelectricitytomanypartsofthecountry.Thedangerousnavigationchannelwillthenbesubmergedinaplacidlake.TheThreeGorgeswillpresentanentirelydifferentpicture.
