Kangfu Li Draft 2 ‘There are many threats to global food supplies.’ Explain the problem, identify possible solutions, and assess the implications if implementing these solutions. Introduction Today, food supply is facing many threats which could affect the survival of the human beings. The food supply is a global issue as many people in the world are suffering from starvation. It is time that people should realize the importance of protecting food security. This essay would first explain the threats to the global food supplies, which means that to describe the possible negative effects on food safety, and then to identify possible solutions with which the threats could be discarded, and finally assess the implications if implementing these solutions, which means that to identify whether these solutions could be put into practice or not. Growth in population Firstly, one of the major threats to food supplies is the dramatic increasing in population. Both Slaght (2012) and Godfray et al. (2010) stated that a large number of people are suffering from food deficiency. They believed that 1 billion people are experiencing starvation, but Slaght (2012) further suggested that 2 billion people lack a small amount of food. In addition, Godfray et al. (2010) explained in detail how growth population could threaten food supplies. He suggested that the increasing number of people have more income and higher ability to buy, which enables them to demand more food, and as a result, the food system could be more disturbed. One possible approach to solve the food security problem is reducing the food waste to meet the demand of the increasing population. More specifically, which is put forward by Godfray et al. (2010) that upgrade the food prices in developed countries. If this solution were put into practice, people would value the food more and thus could reduce the food waste. However, more people could possibly be undernourished because many poor people in developed countries could not afford the expensive food expenditure. What is more serious is that people would be dissatisfied with the food prices and take a series of anti-government actions which could cause turmoil in society. Climatic Change Words count: 721 Kangfu Li Draft 2 Climatic Change might be another threat to food supply system. According to Slaght (2012), global warming may cause climate change, which may have negative impact on food production. For example, birds and animals lose their home because we require a higher food production. As is stated by Sekercioglu, Daily and Ehrlich (2004), 10 percentages of bird species were probably to disappear and even morebirds could be on their ways to disappear by the end of this century. As was suggested by Godfray et al. (2010), because the producers are competing with each other to gain more sources to produce food, there could be more negative effects on the environment. A solution offered by Slaght (2012) to solve this problem is to plant more crops in regions where are suitable in climates for them to grow up and then import food from other countries. However, a country could be too dependent on other counties and lose its own agriculture in this case.Once the relationships of these countries became severe, country where had less agriculture may be easily controlled by others in food prices because there is not enough food in its domestic land. As a result, it may hard to put the solution into practice. Furthermore, it is argued by Slaught (2012) that this solution could increase the consumption of resources such as fuels and coals to transport food, which could further deteriorate the environment. Conclusion The growth of population and the change of climatic could bemajor threats to food supplies. Raising the price of food, build more roads etc. could be some solutions to solve these problems, and each solution has its disadvantages. When handle with these threats, people ought to be aware of both sides of the solutions. References Slaght, J. (2012) Diet and sustainability key to feeding the world: a food report.
