Roast is very famous in Brazil (巴西). Customers just sit, waiting for waiters to send them all kinds of meat. If you like, you take one; if you don’t, the waiters pass you. If you don’t give any messages of no more sending, they will go on sending you meat.
One day when I was in Brazil, I went to a restaurant to try the roast. After I took my seat, the waiters gave me the sign (牌子) with the color “red” on one side and “green” on the other. I said “thank you”, then the waiters began to serve me. My plate was already full, but the waiters still kept on serving me more. I thought I had to eat more quickly. But to my surprise, the waiters still kept on serving more. (51) Then a waiter found out the reason. He helped me to turn the sign over, with the red outside. When I finished, I found the waiter didn’t serve me, just passed me. If I didn’t call them, they didn’t take a look at me. Do you know why? It’s just like the traffic lights (交通信号灯) in the street. The weather was bad and the students had to stay indoors. As they couldn’t play outdoors, they were unhappy, and some even got into fights from time to time.
Some of the teachers at the college asked Dr Naismith to invent a game so that the students might have something to play at. It was not easy to invent such a game because it had to be played indoors, and the court (院子) was not very large.
Dr Naismith thought for a few days and invented a kind of ball game. It was a fast, wonderful game with much moving and passing of the ball. (54) It was played between two teams. To make a score, the ball had to be thrown into the basket ten feet above the floor on the wall. At each end of the court there was such a basket.
