In the introduction part, Yide is more of the typical representative of post-80s and post-90s than the representative of only children in the new century. Though the only children rate is high and still on the increase, there are still many a children with brothers and sisters, who share the similar features to Yide, such as aficionado for stars, comic books, “Harry Potter” and whatever in fashion. The new characteristics are presented not only in only children group, but in most of the post-80s and poat-90s. So here the author narrows the range. Below, he regards Yao Ming as the best-known single children without a description on his affairs to support his topic. Then he cites the quotation of a staff member of the Population Study Institute at East China Normal University. However, the staff member and the article where he saw the quotation is not quite clear, so the quotation is lacking in authority to be trusted. With respects to the first key effect, the author point out that Yaolan’s 550,000 members spent an average of $250 a month on child related purchases to testify family’s big consumption on children. The group he chooses is not typical enough, because it is not casually picked. Next, he set a specific example to prove his point, but it is so particular that it cannot indicate the common situation. According to a survey of Horizon Research in cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou and so on, the expenditure for children amounts to one third of family general income. With an accurate figure from an authoritative institution, one’s claim can be more credible. As to the second effect, he claims that the only-child has brought about a vast market in electronic gadgets, condominium and cars. However, single children themselves are not the sole reason. Their consumption is influenced by over-surplus products and flooding consumption culture, and the inappropriate education, etc. Thus, the support may not be relevant enough. In the third effect, the author comes to a conclusion that these only children show much filial piety with Yide’s example again. According to a questionnaire about single children’s parents in Shanghai, single children have much dependence on their parents in economy, which will result in parents’ lose of money for their old ages. Furthermore, these single children are more likely to live by themselves, and only 30 present would rather live with their parents. As a result, most parents will live lonely in their twilight years. The author can not successfully prove his claim just with one special example. In a word, the essay is to some extent effective and credible with some ill-considerations. The support he uses is not typical enough to sustain his claim and the essay needs some modification.
