Note-takingSkill------TheCornellMethodNote-takingSkill:TheCornellMethodTheCornellMethodisfrequentlyusedbystudentstotakenotes.Inthismethodyoudividethepaperintotwocolumns.Yourecordmainpointsintheleftcolumnandrelatedorsupportingdetailsintherightcolumn.Bydoingthis,youcaneasilyfollowthespeakerandorganizetheinformationbetter.BackCornellMethodTheCornellNotessystem(alsoCornellnote-takingsystemorCornellmethod)isanote-takingsystemdevisedinthe1950sbyWalterPauk,aneducationprofessorinCornellUniversity.It’salsoknownasCornell’s5R’sofNoteTaking:Record,Reduce,Recite,Reflect(思考),Review.TheCornellmethodprovidesasystematicformatforcondensingandorganizingnotes.Thestudentdividesthepaperintotwocolumns:thenote-takingcolumn(usuallyontheright)istwicethesizeofthequestions/keywordcolumn(ontheleft).Thestudentshouldleavefivetosevenlines,orabouttwoin(5cm),atthebottomofthepage.Notesusuallyconsistofthemainideasofthetextorlecture,andlongideasareparaphrased.Longsentencesareavoided;symbolsorabbreviationsareusedinstead.Toassistwithfuturereviews,relevantquestions(whichshouldberecordedassoonaspossiblesothatthelectureandquestionswillbefreshinthestudent'smind)orkeywordsarewritteninthekeywordcolumn.Within24hoursoftakingthenotes,thestudentmustreviseandwritequestionsandthenwriteabriefsummaryinthebottomfivetosevenlinesofthepage.Whenreviewingthematerial,thestudentcancoverthenote-taking(right)columnwhileattemptingtoanswerthequestions/keywordsinthekeywordorcue(left)column.ListeningSkill:ListeningforMainIdeasNow,let’sreinforcetheuseofthismethod.Dividethepaperintotwocolumnsandthenwritedownthemainpointsintheleftcolumnandthesupportingorrelateddetailsintherightcolumn.
