PAGEWilliamA.AndersWilliamA.AnderswasamemberofthefirstcrewofastronautstobreakawayfromEarth'sgravitytoorbitthemoonontheApollo8missionatChristmas-time1968.AnderswasbornOctober17,1933,inHongKong.HereceivedaBachelorofSciencedegreefromtheU.S.NavalAcademyin1955andaftergraduationwascommissionedintheU.S.AirForce,servingasafighterpilotinall-weatherinterceptionsquadronsoftheAirDefenseCommand.HereceivedaMasterofSciencedegreeinnuclearengineeringfromtheAirForceInstituteofTechnologyandwasassignedresponsibilityfortechnicalmanagementofnuclearpowerreactorshieldingandradiationeffectsprogramsattheAirForceWeaponsLaboratory.HeretiredattherankofmajorgeneralintheAirForceReserve.NASAselectedAnderstobeanastronautin1964.HereceivedhisfirstflightassignmentasamemberoftheApollo8crew,alongwithtwoGeminiveterans,CommanderFrankBormanandJimLovell.OnDecember21,1968,Apollo8becamethefirstmannedshiptoleaveEarthorbitasitstreakedtowardthefirsthumanmissiontothemoon.EarlyonChristmasEve,theastronautsbrakedintolunarorbitand,inbreathlessterms,describedthedesolate,crateredandbeautifullandscapejust60milesbeneaththem.InaChristmasEvemessagetotheworld,Anders,LovellandBormanreadthestoryofcreationfromthefirst10versesoftheBible'sBookofGenesis.Humanslistenedenthralled,whilewatchingavividtelevisedimageofthemoon'ssurface.Anderstookthefirst"EarthRise"picturewhichwascommemoratedonaU.S.postagestamp.OnChristmasDay,Apollo8firedoutoflunarorbitandspedbacktowardEarthandaperfectlandinginthePacificOceanonDecember27.AndersleftNASAafterthatmissionandfrom1969to1973heservedasexecutivesecretaryoftheNationalAeronauticsandSpaceCouncil.In1973hewasappointedtotheAtomicEnergyCommission.Followingreorganizationofnationalnuclearregulatoryanddevelopmentactivitiesin1975,AnderswasnamedbyPresidentFordtobecomethefirstchairmanofthenewNuclearRegulatoryCommission.FordlaternamedhimU.S.ambassadortoNorway.Andersleftthefederalgovernmentafter26yearsservicein1977andassumedaseriesofmanagementpositionswiththeGeneralElectricCompanyandTextron,Inc.HelaterwaschairmanandCEOoftheGeneralDynamicsCorporationbeforeretiringin1996.HeispresidentanddirectorofTheAndersFoundation,aphilanthropicorganization,andApogeeFlight,ownerofhisairracingaircraft.WilliamAnderswasinductedintotheU.S.AstronautHallofFameonOctober4,1997.
