高一英语必修五 Unit 5 First Aid Learn about language and structure 温州第51中 陈心心 Teaching aims: Students will further learn how to use the key words and phrases in this unit. Students will get the first impression of the Ellipsis, like what is ellipsis, and what should be ellipsis. Focus: Words: poison, poisonous, water, watery, swell, burn, various, variety, infect, injure, injury, cover, organ, etc. Expressions: first aid, in place, fall ill, etc. Structures: Ellipsis Teaching procedures: Step1: pre-reading Question: what’s the most important in our life? Ss: life T: why? Ss: life is valuable. If there is no life, there is nothing. T: Yes. You’re right. Life is precious, however, life is also weak! So what’s very vital(important and necessary) to save one’s life? Ss: First Aid. T: So we know learning about First Aid is important and necessary. Then, what’s first aid? (Show Ss two pictures about how to deal with common injuries like nose bleeding and burnt.) Ask the Ss to pay attention to the right form of the word: Her nose is b_______ . He has got b________. She has a b________ nose. Maybe he receives a serious b________. Step 2 Practice: Pay attention the right forms of the given words according to the context of the sentences. Exercise: 1. You will be ________ if you are bitten by a ___________ snake. (poison) 2. The coffee is very hot. Don’t ________your mouth. Or you will receive serious ________.(burn) 3.Wood often ________ when wet. The river was _________with melted snow. (swell) 4. The shopping center sells a wide _____ of goods and the prices _______ from 2yuan to 1000yuan.(vary) 5. Chopping onions makes her eyes_______. Her eyes were red and ________from crying. (injure) T: Was Peter a lucky man, or unlucky man? Then let’s read another story about Peter, and find out what happened to him? (The following is A short passage about first aid of burning. The students are requested to fill in the blanks with the given words and phrases that learned in the unit.) (When Ss enjoy the flash, ask them to pay a little attention to the structure in the sentences shown on the screen.) •​ (It) Looks like rain. •​  Hi. Step 4 Discover the structure T: so you know what structure we’re going to talk about today? T writes “Ellipsis” on the blackboard. T: Then what’s ellipsis? Can you give me its definition in your own words? Ss: in the sentences some words are left out. T: Now please compare the sentences in Ex2 (Textbook)and discuss which one is better in each pair of the sentences and why. (Ss read and compare in group of four) Ss report the result of their discussion. T: Then why they are better? And what kind of words should be left out? Ss: some unnecessary words; some repeated words. Now observe and discover : which part of the sentence can be left out, try to find the rule? Bb: 1.​ subject 2.​ predictive 3.​ object 4.​ part of predictive 5.​ subject and predictive 6.​ object is “to do” T: Yes, very good. Generally speaking, any part of the sentences can be left out as long as the meaning is clear and not confusing. Step 5 Two important types of ellipsis that Ss should grasp. Ss find out the rules by observing the example sentences and group discussion. Summary 1: 在hope, wish, want, like, love, decide, plan, mean, prefer, want, have to, be able to, be going to, used to, ought to等动词及习语后面出现与上文相同的不定式时,常保留不定式符号to,而把其它部分省略. 如果不定式为一般式to be...或完成式to have done时,则不定式符号to和be或have常一并保留,be或have之后的部分通常要省略。 Ellipsis in compound sentences: Summary 2: 由when,while,as, once,whenever引导的时间状语从句;或由if,unless引导的条件状语从句;由though,although,even if ,even though引导的让步状语从句;由as though,as if,as引导的方式状语从句;由because引导的原因状语从句;由wherever引导的地点状语从句,若从句的主句是it或与主句的主语相同,且在谓语中含有be时,常省略从句的主语和be。 Exercise: 1. _____, I will help you with your work.
