摘 要
建筑作为一种文化符号,成为了文化

深层次的思考,才能真正理解建筑形式的根本动因。建筑结构早在20世纪50年
代就已经被学者作为环境因素纳入非语言交际研究的范畴。目前,建筑设计和室
内装饰作为环境语的一部分已成为跨文化非语言交际研究的主要范畴之一(毕继
万,2004)。本文以建筑这一直观、形象的文化载体,作为中外跨文化对比研究的
对象。针对从建筑材料和空间布局两方面所形成和反映出的建筑文化内涵进行对

论文共分四部分。
第一部分引言。
第二部分主要研究在儒家天入合一的宇宙观,物我一体的自然观,阴阳有序
的环境观,及地域环境悬殊影响下,中国传统建筑具有历史性和地域性的建筑文
化特点。有突显皇权至上的宫殿,尽显自然和谐的园林,体现多民族地域文化的
民居等类型。基督教的天堂地狱说、原罪论、上帝主宰万物而形成的世界观、审
美观指导下,西方建筑具有巨大的体量、超然的尺度、严密的几何性等特点,形
成巍然屹立的外观特征,给人以突出、激越、向上的震撼力和感染力。

体现了黄河、长江流域内向聚敛的黄土文明。西方建筑则采用石头为主要建材,
书写了“石头史书”和石文化(阳文化),独立向上、单体高耸的布局。充满了以
神权为核心的基督教气息,展示了地中海沿岸外向扩张的海洋文明。
第四部分为结论。中西文化差异的根本动因是中国的儒家文化和西方的基督教
义分别统治着中西的意识形态,只有理解中西方不同的文化特征,才能充分体会
不同建筑的韵味。跨文化研究应该熔古铸今、意在寻根,广采博收、志在崛起。

Abstract
Architectureasakindofculturalsymbolhasbecometheexteriorcarrierofcultural
representation.Trulyunderstandingthefundamentalmotival:ionofarchiteeturalforms
ispossibleonlybasedoncontemplationfromtheperspectiveofculture.Asearlyasin
the1950s.architecturalstructurehadbeenincludedasanenvironmentalfactorinthe
researchonnonverbalcommunication.Beingapartofenvironmentallanguage,now
architecturaldesignandinteriordecorationhavebeenoneofthemaincategoriesof
cross—culturalnonverbalcommunicationresearch.InthisPapeLarchitecture,thevisual
culturalcarrier,istakenasthesubjectinthecross.culturalcomparativestudy.Fromthe
aspectsofarchitecturalmaterialsandspatiallayout.thedifferencesbetweenChinese
andwesteraarchitectureculturalconnotationsareanalyzed,whichrevealsthegreat
influenceoftheprofounddifferencesbetweenChineseandwesternculturesonthe
architecturalstyle.

thecore.TlliSdepictstheextrovertedandexpansionaryoceancivilizationofthe

Partfouristheconclusion.Thefundamentalmotivationofthedifferencesbetween
Chineseandwestemculturesisthat,ChineseConfuciancultureandwesternChristian
doctrinesdominatetheirideelogies,respectively.Cross.culturalcommunicationshould

1Introduction
Asearlyasinthe1950s,architecturalstructurehadbeenincluded私all
environmentalfactorintheresearchonnonverbalcommunication.Beingapartof
environmentallanguage,nowarchitecturaldesignandinteriordecorationhavebeenone
ofnlemaincategoriesofcross-culturalnonverbalcommunicationresearch.(BiJiwart,
2004).
ArchitectureiSthemostenornlousandattractivememberintheworldofart.As
solidifiedculture,itsinfluenceonhumanlifehaSalwaysbeenwideandprofotmd.Of
practicalvalue,itisanecessaryshelteragainstwind,rainandsnowaswellasfor
survival;atthesametime,ithaSstrongsocialculturalvalue.Astherecorderand
witnessofhistoryandculture,architecturetrulyreflectsthepolitics,economMideaSand
cultureinsociety,anditisusuallycalled‘'themonumentofhumanculture'’.Different
languagesexpressdifferentideasandfeelings;differentbuildingsbeardifferentcultures
andfaiths.Duringaratherlongperiodoftime,Chineseandwesternarchitecture
developindependentlyinrelativelyclosedsystems,withlittlecommunication,and
thereforetheydifferfromeachotherinformandtrait.Onlyinmoderntimes,withthe
communicationandfusionofChineseandwesternideas,culturesandscienceand
technology,Chineseandwesternarchitecturenotonlyhasdevelopedagainsttheir
traditionalstyles,buttowardconformance.Hence,architecture,thevisualcultural
carrier,ischosenasthesubjectinthecross—culturalcomparativestudy.
Architectureistheintegrationoftechniques,artandlife.Thougharchitectureis
lifelessentity,thearchitectsvitalizeitwiththeirculturalconsciousnessandmentality.
Beingakindofculturalsymbol,architecturebecomestheexteriorcarrierofcultural
representation.OnlywhenweunderstandthedifferentcharacteristiesofChineseand
westerncultures,Canwehaveathoroughperceptionofdifferentarchitecturalcharms;
andonlywhenweprobeintoculture,Canwetrulyunderstandthefundamental
motivationofarchitecturalforms.Iffatherandmotherofarchitecturearetechnology
andaesthetics,thenitssoulisideasandculture.Man’stechniquescreatematerial
archiltecturalculture,andman’sideasandcultures嬲wellausaestheticideascreate
spiritualarchitecturalculture.

ThispaperanalyzesthedifferencesbetweenChineseandwesternculturesby
comparingtheirarchitecturalculturesintheaspectsofbuildingmaterialsandspatial
layout.Here,besidesarchitecture,comparisonbetweenChineseandwesterncultures
areemphasized;whilecomparingmaterialculturesofarchitecture,priorityisgivento
theenvironmental,survival,socialandhistoricalculturesreflectedbyarchitecture;
whilecomparingthedifferencesbetweenmateriallayersofsuperficialcultures,i.e.the
structureandexternalcharacters,thedeepestpsychologicallayers,i.e.theimplicit
moraloutlook,worldoutlook,naturalview,aestheticviewandvaluesareplaced
emphasisupon.Thecross—culturalcomparisonisconductedthroughnonverbal
communicationandbynonverbalmeansofenvironmentallanguageincludingspace
information,timeinformation,architecturaldesign,etc.,SOastostudyandmasterthe
methodsandskillsofcross-culturalcommunication(WangPeiying,2007).Insucha
way,wemayhaveanactiveattitudetowardtheunderstandingofdifferentcultures,
graspthecharacteristicsofChineseandwesterncultures,cultivatetheadaptabilityto
crosscultures,andimprovecross—culturalcommunicationskills.

—-DeeplyInfusedwithConfucianism
Chinesearchitecturalcultureisauniquecultureintheeast.Ithasrichand
profoundconnotation,alongstandinghistoryandaparticularsystem,anditsspritis
worldwideinfluential.Thelongandsplendidhistoryofseveralthousandyears
witnessesprehistoricdawn,morningsunlightoftheQingandHanDynasties,beautiful
sunoftheSuiandTangDynasty,andsunsetglowoftheMingandQingDynasties.As
thecarrierofChineseculture,Chinesearchitecturehasforgedthegreatspiritofthe
Chinesenationonthehorizonintheeast,anditstilldevelopswithoutcease.
Chinahasbeenacountrywhoseideologyis govemexlbyConfucianism.
Confucianismwasthespiritualaxisinancientsociety.Itimpactedeverythingincluding
thebasicelementsofculturalessence,suchasnationalcharacter,values,group
mentality,ethicideas,moralstandards,religiousfeelingsandaesthetictastes,andalso
exertedade印influenceonChinesearchitecture.Confucianismadvocatescourtesyand
regardsthisasthebaseofgoverningastateandtheprincipleofpersonalbehaviors,
basedonwhichthemultitypesaswellastheformandsystemofarchitecturecalneinto
being,wimfeudalregimeasthecore;Confucianismupholdssupremacyofmonarchical
power.Theemperorwasthedestinedlordofthousandsofpeople,andthereforecapital
palaceswerebuiRtomagnifyhissupremeregality;Confucianismadvocatesheaven
worship.Worshipofheavenandearthwasimportantineverydynasty;therefore,the
TempleofHeaven,theTempleofEarth,theTempleofSun,theTempleofMoon,the
ImperialDivineTempleandtheTempleoftheFirstFarmerwerebuilt.Confucianism
supportsfilialpietytoparentsandimitationofancestors,andthereareancestraltemples
andmausoleums;ConfucianismstandsforbalancedandorderlyYinandYang,thus
therearePalaceofHeavenlyPurity,PalaceofEarthlyTranquility,representingthe

heavenandtheearth,respectively,andthedifferentpositionsofdragonandphoenix
symbolizetheownershipofimperialpower;Confucianismadvocatespriorityinrank
anddifferencesbetweenthesuperiorandtheinferiorandstressestoembodytheseby
architecture.Therewererigidregulationsonbaywidth,formandsystem,color,ridge
decorations,anddisobeyorarrogationwasnotallowed(QinHongling,2004);
Confucianismisinfavorofexcellenceandorderliness.Thearchitectureissquareandin
neatformation,hierarchicalandorderly,inagroupstyleandhorizontallystretched,
formingthestrictlayoutofcapitalcity,imperialpalacesandbuildingswithasymmetric
centralaxis;ConfucianismadvocatesHarmonyofManwithNatureandOnenessof
SubstanceandSelfandemphasizesthathumanarecloselyconnectedwithnature
(ZhangShiying,2007).Withmellowandfinewoodasitsbasicbuildingmaterial,
architecmrecomposesahistoryofwoodandwaterculture(Yinculture).
LocatedintheYellowRiverandtheYangtzeRivervalleys,Chinathatisof
mainlandcivilizationisamultinationalcountrywiththelongesthistory,thelargest
populationandthevastestregions.Undertheinfluenceoftheworldoutlookof
‘'HarmonyofManwithNature'’,naturaloutlookof“OnenessofSubstanceandSelf',
environmentaloutlookof‘'BalanceandOrderbetweenY'mandYang(negativeand
positive)”,moderateviewofsocietyandculture,andremarkablydifferentregional
environments,Chinesearchitecturehasformeditshistoricalandregionalcultural
features:antiquityintheHartDynasty,magnificenceintheT0ngDynasty,
standardizationintheSongDynasty,freedomintheYuanDynasty,andformandsystem
intheMingandQingDynasties;purityandhonestyinthenorthland,graceandbeauty
inregionssouthoftheYangtzeRiver,simplicityandeleganceinSichuan,sublimityin
thenoahoftheGreatWallandflowerinessontheYunnan—GuizhouPlateau.
TheancientChinesearchitectureisdiversifiedintype,andtheachievementsin
palacesandgardensareespeciallyoutstanding.

Palacearchitectureissolemn,splendid,magnificent,luxurious,precisely
symmetricandsternlyhierarchical.Itistheembodimentofsupremeandstately
imperialpowerandConfucianismwithrigidfeudalhierarchy.
2.1.2ClassicalGardenCulture

Chinesegardensareimportantheritageofhumancivilizationandamarvelous
spectacleinworldart.
Chinesegardensareessenceofnaturalbeautyandharmonyandareinfusedwith
human’Sideas,cultureandtastes.Gardenshavesuchelementsashills,pools,plants,
structures,paintingsandcalligraphy.Withpaintingsasthebaseandpoetryasthetheme,
poolsareexcavatedtoformhills,flowersandtreesareplanted,pavilionsandsmall
bridgesareconstructed,andflowingwaterisintroduced,interspersedwithpoemsand
paintingsaswellasinscriptionsandcouplets,creatingapicturesquesceneryanda
natural‘'musicofhills,Water,treesandsprings”一“silentpoemandthree·dimensional
painting”.Beingartificialwork,thegardensarelikenaturalcreation.Theyare
impregnatedwimthegreatwisdomofConfucianisminhandlingtherelationship
betweenhumanandnature,humanandsociety,andhumanandsoul.Thenaturalbeauty
ismadetypicalandconvenedintobeautyofgardenbyobstructive,added,oppositeand
enframedscenery,makinganartisticeffectthatthemostpleasantscenerygradually
appears,smallsceneryleadstoalargeoneandscenerychangesalongwithmovement
ofvisitors.Thisindicatesthenatural,tranquil,implicitandharmoniousConfucian
culturalstateofChinesepeoplewhoareindifferenttofameandfortune.
Generally,Chinesegardensaredividedintotwokinds:
(1)Royalandprivategardensbystatusofowners.
“Allofthelandundertheheavenbelongstotheking.’’Royalgardensare
large—scaledandgorgeous,wimrealhillsandwater;privategardensaresmalland

exquisite,withartificialhillsandflowingwater.
(2)Northerngardens,gardensontheYangtzeDelta,andsoutherngardensbylocation.
Northerngarden:NoAhChinahasabroadterritory,islackinginrivers,lakes,
gardenstonesandgreentrees.Theselargerobust-stylegardenshaveimitatedand
miniaturesceneriesandtheirlayoutsarepermeatedwithConfucian,Taoistand
Buddhistideas.MostofthemareinancientcapitalcitiessuchasBeijing,Xi’all,
Kaifeng,etc.
GardensontheYangtzeDelta:TheareassouthoftheYangtzeRiverarepopulous
andhavepicture—likesceneries.Localgardensalesmallandexquisite,brightand
beautiful,quietlyelegantandnaive,andzigzag,deepandserene.Theyare“gentle
freehandbmshworklandscapepaintings'’fullofculturalimplications,representedby
Suzhougardens.Thefourfamousgardens,i.e.theSurgingWavePavilion,theLion
GroveGarden,theHumbleAdministrator’SGardenandtheLingeringGarden,which
concentratetheessenceofgardensontheYangtzeDelta,representthearchitectural
stylesintheSong,Yuan,MingandQingDynastiesandarelistedintheWorldNatural
andCulturalHeritage.
Southerngardens:Theyarelocatedintheblessedsubtropicalregionswith
evergreenseasonsandrichrivers.Thesegardenshavetropicalsights:theflowershave
multiplevarietiesandarearomaticalltheyearround,theplantsarealwaysgreen,and
thestructuresarehighandspacious.ExistentgardensareQinghuiGardeninShunde
andKeGardeninDongguan,Guangdong.
2.1.3FolkHouseCulture
--ExhibitingRegionalFeatures
Chinahasawideterritory,densepopulation,variousenvironments,andstrongly
enclosedregions(especiallyareaswhereminoritiesresideandmountainbelts).For
bettersubsistence,peopleadapttoandmakeuseoftheirsurroundingenvironments,and
multipletypesoffoⅡ【housesarebuilt.Forexample,gorgeousnorthcourtyardhouses
(Beijing);stiR-styleprettybamboohousesofDaiethnicminoritygroup(Yunnan);
spaciousstiltedhousesofMiaoandWujiaethnicminoritygroups(westernHunan);cave
housesontheLoessPlateau(northernShannxi);round-castle-styletraditionalhouses

architecturalcultures,whichhighlydisplaycharacteristicsofChineseConfucianculture
andbroadregions.Modemarchitectureintheneweraisthecombinationofthepastand
thepresentaswellasChineseandwesternideas,pavingapromisingwayforthe
developmentofarchitecturalculture.
2.2WesternArchitecturalCulture

Inthelonghistoryofdevelopment,westernarchitecturalculturehasformed
differentstyleswithclearcharacteristics.Itisanintegralpartoftheglobaltreasuryof
architecturalcultureandartandisthepreciousspiritualwealthofhumanbeing.
Buildingsofvariousfeaturesglorifytheeternityandloftinessofarchitecturalartby
giganticmassandsize.Withstrictgeometry,theirverticalityisusuallyshowedoffby
outstretchedcovesandsteeples,formingatoweringandanti—natureoutline.This
impressespeoplewithanoutstanding,aggressiveandupwardpowerandappeal.While

behavioralmodeandvalueorientationofwesternpeopleintheprocessofconquering
nature.
Westernculturedatesbacktoveryearlytimes,rootinginandcenteringonthe
ancientGreekcultureandradiatingtotheentireEuropeanContinentandtheNorth
AmericanContinent.Similarly,ancientGreekarchitectureistheexploiterofWestern
Europeanarchitectureandisprofoundlyinfluentialonmorethantwothousandyearsof

WesterncultureisChristianculture.Astheonlyandabsoluteideologyinwestern
society,ChristianitybelievesthatGodisunparalleledandomnipotentandhecreates
everythingintheworldanddominatesthehistory,andthatman’sancestorsAdamand
EveatetheForbiddenFruit,theywerebornguiltyandcouldnothelpthemselvesbutto
embraceGod,insuchawaytheycouldgototheheavenaftertheydied,ortheywould
bethrownintothedisaster-riddenhell(ChenQinzhuang,2002).

Astheonlyandabsoluteideologyinwesternsociety,Christiancultureimpacts
everyfieldofpeople’Slife,andalsoinfusesthearchitecturalculturewithChristian
doctrines.
Religiousarchitecturehasbeenprevailingforalongtime,andmodemwestern
architectureinheritsandcontinuesthisstyle.
Christiantheoryofheavenandhellmakespeopleobsessedwimconfusion,
fanaticism,illusionandbewilderment,andthereforethearchitecturehasgiantsize,
strongspatialcomparison,mysteriouschangesofshadeandshadow,unexpectedshape,
unrulyforceandunrestatmospherefranklyexternalizepeople’Sreligiouspassion(Fu
Dan,2004).
ChristianitydisseminatesOriginalSindoctrine,andthespatiallayoutof
