They are at work in the office. Debbie and Simon looked up as a well-dressed lady entered. The lady glanced at them both, and then walked over to Debbie. Debbie greeted her cheerfully. 'Hello,' the lady said. '1 want to go by train from Shenzhen to Guangzhou ...' Simon sighed. Mr Young, a senior employee, was standing beside him. 'What's up, Simon? You don't look very happy.' 'The customers always prefer Debbie to me. I can't understand it.' 'I can. It's the way you communicate.' 'How can that be?' Simon asked. 'I don't even get a chance to speak to them。 'Speech is not the only way we communicate. Body language is important, too." 'What kind of language is that?' 'It's the way you stand and sit. It's your gestures and the expression on your face and in your eyes. Your whole appearance communicates things. You often rest your head on your hand. You don't look up. You never smile. So you don't make a good impression on the customers. 'But look at Debbie. She's holding her head up. She makes eye contact with the customers. She smiles. That's why the customers go to her, and not to you.' After that, Simon decided to improve his body language. He sat up and smiled at the customers. Minutes later, a beautiful girl entered. She looked at Debbie and then at Simon. Without hesitation, she went to Simon and gave him a big smile. A few moments later, she left happily. Mr Young came over at once and said, "You made a good impression on her". 'That was my sister,' Simon said. 'She came to remind me that tomorrow is her birthday and she wanted to have lunch with me.' It always shows ideas through dance instead of speech. This kind of classical dance began about 400 years ago and became a stage show in the 18th century. Today, many people around the world love to watch ballet. Through television, they can watch the world's most famous ballets, such as 'Swan Lake' and 'Sleeping Beauty'. It is more than 4,000 kilometres long. It took a long time to build the wall. The work began in the fifth century ?, and the wall finally took shape in the third century BC. From Beijing, you can visit the Great Wall at Badaling, 70 kilometres northwest of the city. It is also possible to go hiking on the Great Wall in some other places. 2 Shanghai Museum lies in the centre of Shanghai. The splendid museum building has a square base and a round top. The centre of the top is a glass dome, which looks like a huge bronze mirror. 6 In the museum, you can find a large number of ancient Chinese bronzes, painting, etc. It is open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. 3 The scenery along the Li River in Guilin is just like a beautiful landscape painting. Take a boat trip, and you will be attracted by the peaks along the river and their reflections in the clear water. It is also great fun walking and cycling in Guilin. Along the paths near the river you can see local village life, and you can take a mud bath in the nearby caves. The best time to visit Guilin is from April to October, though it rains sometimes then。 Page 34 LISTENING Following directions on a map Listen to Wendy telling her friend about her tour of Europe.Use a pencil to draw lines on the map below to show where she went. At Debbie's school, students can write to Ms Robbins, the school counsellor about their problems. Here are extracts from three letters she received recently. 1 I had not seen my friend Amy for a long time, so last Sunday I went to visit her in her new high-rise flat. While I was there, she knocked a flower pot from her window by accident. It broke on the ground below and narrowly missed some children at play. No one was hurt, so we said nothing and left for the cinema. When we got home. we learnt that the police had just been to the flats and questioned everyone about the pot. Amy was too afraid to talk to the police. Now I feel guilty and don't know what to do ... 2 By nine o'clock yesterday evening, I had finished my piano lesson and was taking the underground home. Three strong boys got on my almost empty carriage. They sat down beside a young boy who was travelling alone. They began to bully him. The boy was so frightened that he moved to another seat. However, the bigger boys just followed him and continued their bullying. Then the train stopped at my station. I got off the train and walked home. I felt very sorry for the boy, but I did not know how to help him. I'm not strong enough and I hate violent behaviour. What could I do? ... 3 The checkout assistant at my local supermarket is always rude and unhelpful. Yesterday, I gave her a 100-yuan note to pay for a bottle of water. She was so busy complaining that she gave me an extra 20-yuan note in my change by mistake. When I noticed the error, I went back and tried to tell her about it. 'Excuse me,' I said. But before I could continue, she stopped me. 'Can't you see there is a queue?' she shouted. 'Go to the end and wait your turn.' I'd had enough! I left the shop with the 20 yuan. Because she was rude, I decided to keep the money. Was I wrong? Page48 LISTENING Some people are calling a radio programme to ask experts for advice on their problems. The director hurried down from the control room. 'We need another contestant before the show begins,' he shouted. 'Who wants to be on TV?' Angela immediately raised her hand. His attempt to explain how the universe works made him very famous. Einstein often said the only gift he had was curiosity, but this story shows that he also had a sense of humour. As a young scientist, Einstein received many invitations to explain his theories at different universities. On these trips his driver was always the same----a man called Hans. Hans often said; 'It' s a pleasure to drive a genius like you, Dr Einstein.' One evening, on the way to a distant university, Einstein said, 'I'm so tired, Hans. I don't want to give my lecture tonight. But I can't let the audience down.' 'Don’t worry, Dr Einstein. I know what to do,' said Hans. 'I can give the lecture for you. I've listened to it so many times that I've learnt it by heart. No one knows you at this university, so they won't find out.' Einstein agreed, and they changed places. Einstein said to Hans, 'Just don't try to answer any questions.' Hans nodded. At the university, Hans was welcomed and led to a platform in a great hall. Einstein sat in the audience, listened to Hans give the lecture perfectly, and joined in the applause at the end. However, before Hans left the platform, a professor shouted from the audience, ' I'd like to ask you a difficult question.' He then asked a question so difficult that Hans could not understand it at all. Einstein thought, 'Oh, no! Now we're in trouble.' But Hans just laughed and said,'That's not a difficult question. In fact, it's so easy that even my driver knows how to answer it. Hans, please...... Einstein stood up and answered the question perfectly. They left the university. Einstein drove the car again. A little later, Hans offered to drive. 'No, my friend,' laughed Einstein. 'It's a pleasure to drive a genius like you, Hans.' Yet, imaginary things can sometimes create excitement more easily than real ones. In Holland, for example, there is an imaginary flower that is known as widely as any real flower. It is called the 'black tulip'. In the novel The Black Tulip written by Alexandre Dumas in 1850, a young man called 22 Cornelius tries as hard as he can to create a black tulip, in order to win a gardening competition. But just before he succeeds, he is put in prison unfairly. He feels sad and is ready to forget about the flower. However, in prison he meets Rosa, the beautiful daughter of the prison guard. They soon fall in love and together they try to cultivate the black tulip. Of all the gardeners, Cornelius and Rosa grow their flower the most quickly and they win the competition. The book was extremely successful and sold faster than any of Dumas's other works. People all over Europe wanted to grow a real 'black tulip' like the one in the story. However, in nature flowers with bright colours are commonly found while those with dark colours are very rare. Most scientists think that truly black flowers do not actually exist—they are usually dark blue or purple. Despite this, the cultivators have tried their best to make this romantic dream come true and we can all enjoy the special flowers they have made. Page 120 LISTENING Listen to the story of the life of a strangler fig tree, and match the story with the pictures.write the numbers1-6 in the circles to show the correct order. Before you listen, make sure you know the following words: family/ /n.(动植物)科 fig/fig/n. 无花果 strangle/ /v. 烈死,使窒息 strangler fig 烈颈无花果 trunk/ / n. 树干 closely/’klousli/ adv.紧紧地 Tapescript: There is a family of trees called 'fig trees'. Some of these fig trees are killers! They do not kill people; they kill other trees. This happens very slowly, over many years. They kill other trees by strangling them, and so they are called 'strangler figs'. This is what happens. Picture 1 The fig tree produces a small fruit, called a fig. These figs are often eaten by birds. In this picture we can see a bird eating a fig. Picture 2 The birds drop the seeds onto the branches of other trees. They then start to grow there. Here we can see a little seed that is just starting to grow. Picture 3 If the seed gets enough water and light, it will continue to grow. It then starts to grow some roots. 23 These roots grow down the trunk of the old tree, towards the ground. Here we can see the little roots starting to grow. Picture 4 When the roots reach the ground, they grow into it. Because the little fig tree can get more food, it grows more quickly. Picture 5 The fig tree continues to grow. It sends out more roots. Some of these roots go around the trunk of the old tree. They hold the old tree very closely, and start to strangle it. Picture 6 The old tree cannot grow, because the fig tree is holding it very closely. The old tree slowly dies. The fig tree has killed it. Page 124 SPEAKING Talk time Make the announcement below following the rules above. Stress the words and syllables A1 underlined, giving extra stress to those double-underlined. Page 133 Chapter 10 Friend or enemy? Debbie is visiting Simon at his house. Suddenly she sees a spider on the wall. DEBBIE Kill it! SIMON Certainly not. DEBIE You are not afraid of spiders, are you? SIMON Of course I am not, Debbie. They are very useful creatures. Last night, I watched a 24 programme that has completely changed my views on spiders. DEBBIE Oh, not another TV programme, Simon. What did you learn this time? SIMON Well, spiders are the enemies of insects and the friends of humans. Do you know that in parts of China, farmers build shelters for spiders in autumn and put them all over their fields? The spiders can survive winter in them. When spring comes, the spiders appear healthy and hungry. At the same time millions of harmful insects arrive to attack the farmers' crops, DEBBIE So, the spiders fill their empty stomachs with insects and the farmers are happy because their fields are protected? SIMON Yes.The farmers make full use of spiders to save money on pesticides. DEBBIE So,everyone is happy except the insects. SIMON That’s right. And now this natural method of pest control is being copied all over the world. Debbie Interesting. SIMON Yes, and there’s more.Do you know what is strong than steel and lighter than a feather? DEBBIE No.What is it? SIMON It’s the silk in spiders’ webs. Scientists are doing lots of experiments to develop a material with similar qualities. They plan to use it in spaceship, man-made organs like hearts, and to make bulletproof vests. DEBBIE But spiders’bites are dangerous, aren’t they? SIMON To insects, yes, but to people, seldom DEBBIE Wow! We should learn more to understand things in nature instead of destroying them. Page136 LISTENING Understanding descriptions of living things and matching them with the pictures. To understand descriptions of living things and identify pictures, you should do the following: , Listen carefully for expressions that describe size and appearance, such as it is long/short/big/small, etc.; It looks like ... , Also listen carefully for expressions that describe what a creature usually does. Pay attention to the verbs such as lives arid carries. 25 , Below you can see pictures of four strange little creatures. On the recording you will hear someone telling you about these creatures, but in a different order Match the descriptions with the pictures by writing the numbers from 1 to 4 in the circles, Before you listen, make sure you know the following words: stick/stik/n.棍 棒 jaw/ /n.颚 trap/ /n.陷阱 leaf/li:f/n.叶子 Tapescript: Number 1 This creature is long and thin. It moves very slowly. It has six legs, but it usually holds the front two legs in front of its head. It looks like a stick, and its name is 'stick insect'. It eats leaves. It looks like a stick so birds cannot see it and eat it. Number 2 This little creature lives in the ground. It is a small, black insect with six legs, and strong jaws. It likes sand. It makes a little hole in the sand. Then it hides in the sand at the bottom of the hole. When another insect falls into the ho1e, it will catch it with its powerful jaws, and eat it. It is called an 'ant lion', because it catches and eats ants. Number 3 This creature is big and black. It has eight legs, and so it is not an insect. It lives in a hole in the ground. It makes a little home for itself in the ground, and goes in and out through a hole. It makes a door to cover this hole. When it goes inside, it closes the door. This kind of door is called a trap-door, and the creature is called a 'trap-door spider'. Number 4 This is a little, strong insect. It lives in nests, with thousands of others. It has six legs, and a strong mouth. It cuts pieces of leaves from trees, and carries them back to the nest. You can see that the insect in the picture is carrying a piece of a leaf. This insect is a type of ant. It is called a 'leaf-cutter ant'. But my father will set up a company in Shenzhen next year, and I expect to be able to visit Shenzhen more often. Page 147 Chapter 11 POINTS OF VIEW Are TV advertisements for children good or bad? Read this section from a newspaper which includes an article and three readers' letters. A Little spenders are big spenders The latest target for TV advertisements is Asia's fastest growing consumer group-- children. Asian families are getting smaller and wealthier, and Asian children are watching more TV. advertisers use child actors. To get the attention (and the money) of these young viewers, 'The kids can identify with someone from their own age group,' says one advertiser, 'so the advertisements are more effective. And, of course, child actors earn big money.' Not everyone is happy to see children become consumers. Some educators believe children who watch many TV advertisements will become more interested in possessions. A Japanese survey asked children, 'What do you want most in life?' Twenty per cent said money or possessions. So governments are taking action to protect children. For example, the government may ban an advertisement which puts too much pressure on children to buy things. B Bad for children About your 'Little spenders are big spenders' article, I think we should not let children act in TV advertisements. It is illegal for them to work in factories, so why are they allowed to make advertisements? Also, it is bad for children to earn too much money. --Mr Hu C Silly toys Advertising to children is wrong because its aim is to make them ask their parents for money to 27 buy things. In addition, many things that are advertised, such as toys, are silly and encourage violence. If a child buys them, he or she will learn nothing. --Xu Liang D Nothing wrong with children's advertisements I disagree with Mr Hu and Xu Liang. What is wrong with children who earn a lot of money or ask their parents to buy things for them? Besides, for children who buy toys, the most important thing is to have fun, not to learn. --Liu Ping, Sunshine Advertising Page150 LISTENING Listen to three radio advertisements. For each one, write down the name of the product, its special feature(s)and price. Amy began to hunt for a job at her local Careers Advice Centre. Here, she got two pamphlets. 'Job Applications' told her how to apply for a part-time job and what to do in an interview. 'Department Stores' described the kinds of part-time jobs available and the qualifications they required, as well as the pay and working hours in a department store. Next, Amy searched newspapers and the Internet until she found a suitable job. Then she wrote a letter of application, and as a result, was invited to an interview.Amy was pleased, but also nervous. Because she knew she had to prepare well for the interview, she decided to visit the store. She noted the things in the store, the staff's manner and the customers. Then she learnt how long it took to get there. Amy knew she must be on time for the interview at all costs! Amy began thinking about possible interview questions and preparing her answers. She found some examples of interview questions in 'Job Applications'. Some were difficult to answer. For example, how could she prove that she was active? On the day of the interview, Amy wore her best clothes so that she would make a good first impression. She arrived at the interview about ten minutes early and when she was called, she walked confidently into the interview room. Amy was still nervous, but she looked confident. She was sure that she would do well because she was well prepared for the interview. 30 Page163 LISTENING Listening and correcting mistakes Margaret Wang has written a letter to apply for a part-time job,but she has made some mistakes.she has asked a teacher to correct the letter for her. Listen to their conversation and correct the mistakes. Before you listen, make sure you know the following words; comma/ /n.逗号 miss…out 遗漏post/poust/n. 职位 confusing/kcn’fju:zin/adj 令人困惑的 capital/kcpitl/n.大写字母 Yours faithfully 正式信函署名前的套语 Tapescript: MARGARET It's good of you to help me with my letter, Mr Edmonds. MR EDMONDS You're welcome, Margaret. Right, let's have a look at it .... Good, you've spelt 'advertisement' correctly. But you need a comma here, after the '20th of May'. And you've missed out a preposition after the word 'apply'. MARGARET Oh, it should be 'apply for'. MR EDMONDS Right. '... to apply for the post ...'OK, now the second paragraph:’I’m a student'. Hmm, 1 think it's better to say 'I am', not I'm', in a letter like this. It's better to be rather formal. MARGARET SO I should change it to 'I am'? MR EDMONDS Yes. And in the next sentence, you need a comma after 'English'.Now, the next paragraph ... the first sentence is all right ... but you've written a number six in the second sentence. I think it would be better to write S-I-X, six school performances. It is more formal.Hmm, and in the next sentence, you've spelt a word wrongly. Can you find it? MARGARET Oh, is it 'library'? MR EDMONDS Yes. It's L-I-B-R-A-R-Y. And I think you've missed another preposition here, after 'played'. I think you mean, '1 have played for several sports teams'. MARGARET Yes. MR EDMONDS NOW, in the next paragraph, there's another spelling mistake.Supermarket' only has one 'p'. It's super', not 'supper'. MARGARET What about 'interesting'? I always have trouble with 'interesting' and 31 'interested'. MR EDMONDS Yes, they're confusing. I'm afraid this is wrong. It should be 'interested', with E-D at the end.The job is interesting, but you are interested in it. MARGARET I see. Is the rest correct? MR EDMONDS Er, finally we don't need a capital 'F' for 'faithfully'. We have a capital 'Y' for 'Yours', but a small 'f' for 'faithfully'. Good, that's all. It will be a good letter when you've corrected those mistakes. MARGARET Oh, good. Thank you very much for your help, Mr Edmonds. MR EDMONDS You're welcome, Margaret. I hope you get the job! MARGARET Thanks! Page 166 SPEAKING A Talk time Asking for and offering advice A1 Simon's marks have not been very good recently.
