But those who are early to bed and early to rise do not always have the upper hand, researchers say. They have revealed that night owls are generally brighter and wealthier than those able to get up early in the morning. ? Experts from the University of Madrid carried out tests on around 1,000 teenagers and found that those who preferred to stay up late demonstrated the kind of intelligence associated with honored jobs and higher incomes. ? The researchers examined the habits and body clocks of the youngsters to determine whether they liked to stay up late and sleep in later in the morning, or preferred to go to bed early and were at their peak in the morning. ? School performance and inductive (归 纳的) intelligence, or problem solving, were measured and academic grades in the major subjects were also taken into account. The results showed that evening types scored higher than morning types on inductive reasoning, which has been shown to be a good estimate of general intelligence and a strong indicator of academic performance. ? They also had a greater capacity to think conceptually as well as analytically. Such abilities have been linked to innovative thinking, more admired occupations and better incomes. Famous night owls include President Obama, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Keith Richards and Elvis Presley. George W Bush, who is regularly in bed by 10pm, Thomas Edison, Napoleon, Condoleezza Rice, who wakes at 4.30am, and Ernest Hemingway are among those known as larks (早 起的人). Jim Horne, professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University, said: ‘Evening types tend to be the more active and creative types, the poets, artists and inventors, while the morning types are the deducers (善于推断者), as often seen with civil servants and accountants.’ A previous study of US Air Force recruits found evening types were much better at thinking laterally (横向) to solve problems than larks. 56. A. a shopping website B. a geography magazine C. a science fiction D. a touring brochure C In face of global warming, much effort has been focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through a variety of strategies. But while much of the research and innovation has concentrated on finding less-polluting energy alternatives, it may be decades before clean technologies like wind and solar meet a significant portion of our energy needs. In the meantime, the amount of CO2 in the air is rapidly approaching the limits proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). “As long as we’re consuming fossil fuels, we’re putting out CO2,” says Klaus Lackner, a geophysicist at Columbia University, “We cannot let the CO2 in the atmosphere rise indefinitely.” That sense of urgency has increased interest in capturing and storing CO2, which the IPCC says could provide the more than 50% reduction in emissions needed to reduce global warming. “We see the potential for capture and storage to play an integral (基本的) role in reducing emissions,” says Kim Corley, Shell’s senior advisor of CO2 and environmental affairs. That forward thinking strategy is gaining support. The U.S. Department of Energy recently proposed putting $1 billion into a new $2.4 billion coal-burning energy plant. The plant’s carbon-capture technologies would serve as a pilot project for other new coal-burning plants. But what do you do with the gas once you’ve captured it? One option is to put it to new uses. Dakota Gasification of North Dakota captures CO2 at a plant that converts (转换) coal into synthetic(合成的)natural gas. It then ships the gas 200 miles by pipeline to Canada, where it is pumped underground in oil recovery operations. In the Netherlands, Shell delivers CO2 to farmers who pipe it into their greenhouses, increasing their production of fruits and vegetables. However, scientists say that the scale of CO2 emissions will require vast amounts of long-term storage. Some propose storing the CO2 in coal mines or liquid storage in the ocean, Shell favors storing CO2 in deep geological structures such as saline (盐的) formations and exhausted oil and gas fields that exist throughout the world. 64. What does the author intend to tell readers? A. How to find more oil and natural gases. B. How to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. C. How to deal with the greenhouse gas creatively. D. How to make good use of solar and wind energy. 65. According to the passage, the following statements are true EXCEPT that _______. A. the idea of capturing and storing CO2 is supported by the American government B. it is widely accepted that the CO2 captured should be stored in deep geological structures C. capturing and storing CO2 is intended to handle the problem with global warming D. long-term storage of CO2 is no easy job because of the scale of CO2 emissions 66. By using CO2, Dutch farmers have been able to _______. A. increase their production of fruits and vegetables B. convert coal into synthetic natural gas C. pump it underground in oil recovery operations D. make exhausted oil and gas fields productive 67. How would you understand the underlined part in the third paragraph? A. It means a project training new pilots who will serve the new strategy. B. It refers to the coal-burning energy plant that U.S government sponsors. C. It implies the carbon-capture technologies will be popular once successful. D. It shows the new idea of reduction of CO2 emissions needs a large sum of investment. D True Manliness “Please, mother, do sit down and let me try my hand,”said Fred Liscom, a bright active boy, twelve years old. Mrs. Liscom, looking pale and worn, was moving languidly (疲倦地) about, trying to clear away the breakfast she had scarcely tasted. She smiled and said, “You, Fred, you wash dishes?” “Yes, indeed, mother,” answered Fred. “I should be a poor scholar if I couldn’t, when I’ve seen you do it so many times. Just try me.” A look of relief came over his mother’s face as she seated herself in her low rocking chair. Fred washed the dishes and put them in the closet. He swept the kitchen, brought up the potatoes from the cellar for the dinner and washed them, and then set out for school. Fred’s father was away from home and as there was some cold meat in the pantry (食品储藏室), Mrs. Liscom found it an easy task to prepare dinner. Fred hurried home from school, set the table, and again washed the dishes. He kept on in this way for two or three days, until his mother was able to resume her usual work. He felt amply rewarded when the doctor, who happened in one day, said, “Well, madam, it’s my opinion that you would have been very sick if you had not kept quiet.” The doctor did not know how the “quiet” had been secured, nor how the boy’s heart bounded at his words. Fred had given up a great deal of what boys hold dear, for the purpose of helping his mother, coasting and skating being just at this time in perfection. Besides this, his temper and his patience had been severely tried. He had been in the habit of going early to school and staying to play after it was dismissed. The boys missed him and their curiosity was excited when he would give no other reason for not coming to school earlier, or staying after school, than that he was “Wanted at home.” “I’ll tell you,” said Tom Barton, “I’ll find him out, boys– see if I don’t!” So, one morning on his way to school, he called on Fred. As he went around to the side door, he walked lightly and somewhat nearer the kitchen window than was absolutely needful. Looking in, he saw Fred standing at the table with a dishcloth in his hand. Of course he reported this at school, and various were the greetings poor Fred received at recess (课间休息).“Well, you’re a brave one to stay at home washing dishes!”“Girl boy!” “Pretty Bessie!”“Lost your apron, haven’t you, Polly!” Fred was not wanting either in spirit or in courage, and he was strongly tempted to resent these insults and to fight some of his tormentors (使苦痛的人). But his consciousness of right and his love for his mother helped him. While he was struggling for self-mastery, his teacher appeared at the door of the schoolhouse. Fred caught his eye, and it seemed to look, if it did not say, “Don’t give up! Be really brave!” He knew the teacher had heard the insulting taunts of his thoughtless schoolmates. The boys received notice during the day that Fred must not be taunted in any manner. They knew that the teacher meant what he said; and so the brave little boy had no further trouble. 68. Which of the following best describes the main idea of this passage? A. A boy began to wash dishes. B. Boys studied very hard for class. C. Boys played games after school. D. A boy learned to be responsible. 69. The underlined word “taunts” in paragraph 14 probably means _______. A. praise B. teasing C. thanks D. shouts 70. The following facts showed Fred’s true manliness EXCEPT that _______. A. he exercised self-control when facing the insults from his classmates. B. he voluntarily did the housework when his mother was sick. C. he gave up a great deal of what boys held dear for the sake of his mother, D. he was free from further trouble thanks to his teacher’s help. 第II卷 (两部分 共35分) 第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) 请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的 单词。 注意:每空只填1个单词。 Could you believe that the ideal person is never the best at anything? Our heads are so full of ambitions about wealth and power that we spin our wheels until we burn ourselves out and are left hopeless and exhausted. There is great pressure to attain the highest level of achievement. By satisfying our vanity (虚荣) we do ourselves more harm than good. The only way to achieve sustainable happiness is to practice the Golden Mean. The idea of the Golden Mean has existed for thousands of years. It is at the centre of both Eastern and Western philosophy and has more influence than the teachings of Aristotle and Confucius. The idea is simple. Every quality has extremes at both ends. The Golden Mean is the natural balance between these extremes. At this harmonious point goodness and beauty are achieved. Socrates used the example of extreme devotion to athletics versus (与„相比) extreme devotion to music to illustrate this idea. The athlete becomes overly aggressive and cruel, while the musician becomes overly soft and womanish. The ideal is someone who practices both athletics and music and acquires a harmonious mixture of both qualities. Consider an example from modern times that I’m sure everyone has observed. The first person is extremely career driven. Each day he focuses on advancing himself. He spends long hours at the office, competes mercilessly with his coworkers, and flatters his superiors. As a result he has almost no personal life. The second person’s only pursuit is leisure. He likes to waste time with his friends watching television and playing video games. Which of these persons is superior? Many people would argue for the hard worker. But at second glance his life is rather cold. His obsession (痴迷) with success has conflicted with his coworkers and left him without a family. He may become rich, but how will he enjoy it? The second man is no better. He has wasted his life in laziness. He has refused to develop himself and exists as a lazybones. Both men are worthy of pity. I think we’d all agree the ideal would be somewhere in between these two people. So how do we find the abstract Golden Mean? It all starts with setting the right goals. Whenever you make a goal you need to do it with the right intention. Don’t set goals with the intention to command other people. Instead, try to start with a goal that is in between total selfishness and total selflessness. The next step to reaching the Golden Mean is knowing your limits. You need to know when one more project is going to stress you out. The idea is to maintain balance at all times. Another step to achieving the Golden Mean is being aware of your personal needs. Sure we need money and success, but having good relationships with friends and family are just as important. I know the Golden Mean is hard to live by, but it is the key to finding your inner confidence. Ben Franklin said, “The wise keep learning from the mistakes of others, fools, scarcely from their own.” Next time you find yourself willing to do anything to be the best of the best, take a moment to reconsider. You may find it is better to be the best “you” you can be. What is the Golden Mean? Passage Passage details outline ? According to a recent survey by CCTV, different groups of people have different dreams. Urban residents dream of having easy access to modern transportation so that life will be easier and more convenient. Besides, they hope to enjoy a better living environment and more public facilities. What college students are mainly concerned about is employment. So their dream is to have well-paid jobs where they can bring their potentials into full play. Meanwhile, they hope the government will strengthen its supervision over food so that people can have more pollution-free and green food. As for the farmers, they hope that they can enjoy good and affordable medical care and their children can receive a good education. As far as I am concerned, my dream is to be enrolled by a good university and be a talent who can make contributions to my country. Besides, I dream there to be practical reforms in education so that high school students have enough time to sleep and exercise. (151words) 部分试题解析: 第22题:答案D。本题学生很容易误选B,因为My pleasure常用来回答Thank you,但是本题侧重于后半部分。At your service意为“随时为 你效劳”。 听力 原文 少年中国说原文俱舍论原文大医精诚原文注音大学原文和译文对照归藏易原文 : Text 1 M: Will John be coming to class this morning? W: He’s supposed to, but actually he won’t come to this class from the hospital until next week as the doctor has said. Text 2 W: What’s happened to Cathy? I haven’t seen her for a couple of weeks. M: She’s gone on holiday for a few days. She should be back sometime late in the month. Text 3 W: Have you heard about Matthew? He didn’t get into the university he applied to. M: Oh, really? I saw him earlier today and he wasn’t looking happy, so that’s probably why. Text 4 W: Excuse me, but is there anyone sitting in the seats next to you? M: Well, there was a couple here just now, but I did overhear them saying they won’t be back for the second act. W: Really? Then would you mind letting us pass so that we can sit there? Text 5 W: Thank you very much for inviting me here, Michael. M: It’s a pleasure. W: The flowers are so lovely, and I like the music too. M: Shall we have some beef soup first? W: That’ll be fine. Text 6 M: I need some help preparing the budget. Can we get together sometime? W: Sure. How about later this morning? M: OK, let me check my schedule. I have to be in a conference call at nine. And at eleven I’ve got to give a presentation. What about ten? W: I’m supposed to be at a committee meeting then. After lunch may be a better time. Are you free at one? M: That should be fine. Text 7 W: I can’t believe you tried to fix the ceiling light without shutting off the electricity first. You could have hurt yourself. M: but I didn’t. I’m still alive and the light is fixed. W: You shouldn’t take chances. And you got up on that tall ladder when you were home alone. You could have fallen down, and no one would have been here to help you. M: But I didn’t fall. Everything’s OK. The light is fixed, and I didn’ t break a leg. Text 8 M: Did you find everything you wanted, Miss? W: Yes, I think I’ll take a few items. Oh dear, I want too many things in your store! Hmm„well definitely, I’ll get this orange skirt. I love it! It fits me perfectly. M: Nice choice. It does look good on you. So let me ring it up. The skirt costs $29 on sale. It’s a good price. W: It sure is. And what is the sales price for the brown boots? M: The boots come to $55 with the 20% discount. W: OK, I’ll also buy them. And how much are these red pants? M: The pants cost $19 on sale. Quite a bargain! Would you like to take them too? W: Well, for that price, I really should. M: Great! Now, is that everything? W: Actually, this green shirt here on the counter is very pretty. I think I must try it on„ Text 9 W: I had such a terrible day yesterday that I’m really starting to believe that Friday the thirteenth is unlucky. M: Why? What happened? W: Everything went wrong. For example, I had to meet an important customer in the morning and on the way to the town, the car broke down. When I finally got there, the customer had already left. M: That’s certainly bad luck. W: That’s not all. In the afternoon, the children asked some kids over to play and they had a pillow fight and tore one of the pillows. When I got home there were feathers all over. M: My goodness! W: Wait! There’s more. Somebody, they won’t say who, had dropped a jar of jam on the new carpet. The dog had laid down on it, so they’d bathed it and they put him on my bed. M: Oh, no! W: Oh, yes! And to make matters worse, my boss and his wife arrived while I was cleaning up the house. I had forgotten that I’d invited them for dinner. Text 10 W: Are you nervous? Maybe you should sit in a blue room. Are you always cold? Maybe you should sit in a room painted in a “warm color” such as soft orange. Are you often sad? Maybe you should sit in a yellow room. Some researchers believe that color has the power to affect your feelings. They believe that colors affect almost everyone in the same way. They tested this idea in different settings. One study was in a workplace. The researchers painted heavy boxes white and they painted light boxes black. They wanted to see how colors affected the workers’ feelings. Which boxes do you think were more difficult to lift? The heavy white one? No. The black boxes were more difficult. The white boxes were heavier but they looked light. The researchers think that this is because light colors seem light. Another study was in a school. Researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada studied children with behaviour problems in their classrooms. When the walls were brown and yellow, the children’ s heart rate went up and they were over-active. When the walls were light and dark blue, the children’s heart rate was slower and the children were much calmer. If this is true, people might want to think carefully about the colors around them—not just in houses, but also in schools, in gyms, in museums, and in restaurants!
