And that s hen the onnetions ou make as lassmates or labmates an blossom into something more. That s hat happened hen Abigail Coplin beame an Amerian Fulbright Sholar here at Peking Universit. She and her olleagues published papers together in top siene journals, and the built researh partnerships that lasted long after the returned to their home ountries. And Professor Niu Ke from Peking Universit as a Fulbright Sholarship -- Sholar in the U.S. last ear, and he reported -- and this is a e from him -- he said, The most memorable experienes ere ith m Amerian friends.

These lasting bonds represent the true value of studing abroad. And I am thrilled that more and more students are getting this opportunit. As ou ve heard, China is urrentl the fifth most popular destination for Amerians studing abroad, and toda, the highest number of exhange students in the U.S. are from China.
But still, too man students never have this hane, and some that do are hesitant to take it. The ma feel like studing abroad is onl for ealth students or students from ertain kinds of universities. Or the ma think to themselves, ell, that sounds fun but ho ill it be useful in m life? And believe me, I understand here these oung people are ing from beause I felt the same a bak hen I as in ollege.
See, I ame from a orking-lass famil, and it never ourred to me to stud abroad -- never. M parents didn t get a hane to attend ollege, so I as foused on getting into a universit,
earning m degree so that I ould get a good job to support mself and help m famil. And I kno for a lot of oung people like me ho are struggling to afford a regular semester of shool, paing for plane tikets or living expenses halfa around the orld just isn t possible. And that s not aeptable, beause stud abroad shouldn t just be for students from ertain bakgrounds.
Our hope is to build onnetions beteen people of all raes and soioeonomi bakgrounds, beause it is that diversit that trul ill hange the fae of our relationships. So e believe that diversit makes our ountr vibrant and strong. And our stud abroad programs should reflet the true spirit of Ameria to the orld.
And that s h hen m husband visited China bak in 201X, he announed the 100,000 Strong initiative to inrease the number
and diversit of Amerian students studing in China. And this ear, as e mark the 35th anniversar of the normalization of relationships beteen our to ountries, the U.S. government atuall supports more Amerian students in China than in an other ountr in the orld.
We are sending high shool, ollege and graduate students here to stud Chinese. We re inviting teahers from China to teah Mandarin in Amerian shools. We re providing free online advising for students in China ho ant to stud in the U.S. And the U.S.-China Fulbright program is still going strong ith more than 3,000 alumni.
And the private setor is stepping up as ell. For example, Steve Sharzman, ho is the head of an Amerian pan alled Blakstone, is funding a ne program at Tsinghua Universit modeled on the Rhodes Sholarship. And toda, students from all kinds of bakgrounds are studing here in China.
Take the example of Roale Niholson, ho s from Cleveland, Ohio. She attends Ne York Universit s program in Shanghai. No, like me, Roale is a first-generation ollege student. And her mother orked to full-time jobs hile her father orked nights to support their famil. And of her experiene in Shanghai, Roale said -- and this is her e -- she said, This it oozes persistene and inspires me to aplish all that I an. And happ birthda, Roale. It as her birthda esterda.
And then there s Philmon Haile from the Universit of Washington, hose famil ame to the U.S. as refugees from Eritrea hen he as a hild. And of his experiene studing in China, he said, Stud abroad is a poerful vehile for people-to-people exhange as e move into a ne era of itizen diploma.
A ne era of itizen diploma. I ould not have said it better mself, beause that s reall hat I m talking about. I am talking about ordinar itizens reahing out to the orld. And as I alas tell oung people bak in Ameria, ou don t need to get on a plane to be a itizen diplomat. I tell them that if ou have an Internet onnetion in our home, shool, or librar, ithin seonds ou an be transported anhere in the orld and meet people on ever ontinent.
And that s h I m posting a dail travel blog ith videos and photos of m experienes here in China, beause I ant oung people in Ameria to be part of this visit. And that s reall the poer of tehnolog - ho it an open up the entire orld and expose us to ideas and innovations e never ould have imagined.
And that s h it s so important for information and ideas to flo freel over the Internet and through the media, beause that s ho e disover the truth. That s ho e learn hat s reall happening in our munities and our ountr and our orld. And that s ho e deide hih values and ideas e think are best - b questioning and debating them vigorousl, b listening to all sides of an argument, and b judging for ourselves.
And believe me, I kno ho this an be a mess and frustrating proess. M husband and I are on the reeiving end of plent of questioning and ritiism from our media and our fello itizens. And it s not alas eas, but e ouldn t trade it for anthing in the orld. Beause time and again, e have seen that ountries are stronger and more prosperous hen the voies of and opinions of all their itizens an be heard.
And as m husband has said, e respet the uniqueness of other ultures and soieties, but hen it es to expressing ourself freel and orshipping as ou hoose and having open aess to information, e believe those universal rights -- the are universal rights that are the birthright of ever person on this planet. We believe that all people deserve the opportunit to fulfill their highest potential as I as able to do in the United States.
And as ou learn about ne ultures and form ne friendships during our time here in China and in the United States, all of ou are the living, breathing embodiment of those values. So I guarantee ou that in studing abroad, ou re not just hanging our on life, ou are hanging the lives of everone ou meet.
And as the great Amerian President John F. Kenned one said about foreign students studing in the U.S., he said I think the teah more than the learn. And that is just as true of oung Amerians ho stud abroad. All of ou are Ameria s best fae, and China s best fae, to the orld -- ou trul are.
Ever da, ou sho the orld our ountries energ and reativit and optimism and unavering belief in the future. And ever da, ou remind us -- and me in partiular -- of just ho muh e an ahieve if e reah aross borders, and learn to see ourselves in eah other, and onfront our shared hallenges ith shared resolve.
So I hope ou all ill keep seeking these kinds of experienes. And I hope ou ll keep teahing eah other, and learning from eah other, and building bonds of friendship that ill enrih our lives and enrih our orld for deades to e.
You all have so muh to offer, and I annot ait to see all that ou ahieve together in the ears ahead.
