Most of Hawthorne's stories are set in Puritan New England and he wrote many fascinating and allegorical stories about the puritans. The Scarlet Letter is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s masterpiece, a classic depiction of Puritan America. It is a story of crime, sin, guilt, punishment and expiation, in the rigid moral climate of the 17th century New England. Hester Prynne is the heroine in the fiction. All through the novel it shows how she is shaped and transformed from a sinner to a saint. At the beginning of the novel, Hester is exposed to the Puritan society in New England for her unpardonable crime—adultery. In the following seven years, shamed and alienated from the rest of the community, however, Hester proves herself an independent, stoic and warm-hearted woman, and she receives approval and respect from her fellow townspeople. At the beginning of the story, the scarlet letter “A” on her bosom stands for “adultery”, but as time goes by, it becomes “able” and even “angel”. The shame attached to the scarlet letter has long gone, and she becomes the saint at the end. This paper mainly discusses Hester’s role as the sinner and saint and analyzes the causes for her transformation from the sinner to the saint. The first part introduces the background of the author Nathaniel Hawthorne and Puritanism, and the concept of original sin that have great influence on the story. In the second part Hester’s role as a thsinner is analyzed against the background of the puritan society in the 17 century and in comparison with Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. Hester’s role as a saint is expatiated in the third part through discussing her good virtues, such as her talent of needlework and hard work, her goodness and sympathy for others, her passion for love and life, and most importantly, her courage and dignity in rebellion against Puritan society. The alternation of Hester and Dimmesdale’s roles as the sinner and the saint in day and night is also analyzed in this part. The fourth part views the sin and saint in another light, which focuses on analyzing Hawthorne’s contradictions in his work.
