He is trapped in the Groundhog Day on February 2; tomorrow never comes. He meets the same people on the same day, and gradually he gets used to it and improves his behavior. In the end, he gets away from the Groundhog Day when Rita, the woman he loves, finally falls in love with him. The film has all the good elements, story, script, directing, casting, music and rhythm. Bill Murray was especially good for the role, Andie MacDowell was as always beautiful, all the supporting cast was good, even that little furry groundhog. You can call it a romantic comedy, for some scenes do make you laugh. But have you thought about the underlying meaning of the movie? The movie reflects the cultural values of love, audacity. Phil Conners is the epitome of many ordinary people, who only care about themselves, complain about this or that and live in boring conventional lives. When he realizes his situation of the repetitive day, he takes advantage of it by stealing money, chasing after girls…However, later he feds up with the never-flowing time and wants to get rid of it. He tries every means to kill himself, but every time he fails and still wakes up safe and sound on the same Groundhog Day. Fortunately, at the edge of breakdown, he begins to love his life and help others. He wants to save the life of an old seedy beggar, learns to play the piano and starts to help the people in trouble. He knows how to appreciate the people around him! Throughout the movie, Phil takes a fancy for Rita, but he can’t win her heart until he becomes “a real person”. When he finally broke away from the time loop, he finally knew the importance of caring for, and loving all beings. Compared with Chinese culture, Western culture is more concerned about the romanticism, and the so called idealistic. When our location film, for example, the Lifetimes Living directed by Zhang Yimou, begins to show a theme located in the Realism, Some Western movie such as the Groundhog Day, making a more romantic content in their works. The movie makes a good question, "When is life worth living?" There is a strange circle that may happen on every person. One doesn’t have the right to be loved until he gets the key to love. I’m happy to see this movie is positive about human being, since Phil is likable and gets his love eventually. Although the movie is about the same day, it is exceptionally intriguing. The behaviors and dialogues of characters keep changing in a delightful direction. We see a scene repeated with something new added, and get different feelings all the time. After watching the movie, I can’t help asking myself a question “What if I were Phil Conners and stopped in the same day?” Mum… I bet I would refresh myself and make the same day different!
