The novel,which indicated the tendency of anti-religious sentiments,against feudal morality and the laws of capitalists, was warmly received by the readers. The causes of Tess’tragedy has been drawn many people’s attention, which made a lot people to research.The famous scholar Douglas was said that in Hardy’s novels they are all possess a common pattern;the heroine represents the old agrarian order battling against the new industrial order.The dominant theme of his novels is the futility of man’s effort to struggle against cruel and unintelligible fate,chance, and circumstances, which are all predestined by the ImmanentWill.
