Lesson Plan - Unit 2 Two Geniuses - Grammar Lesson Plan Analysis of teaching material In the Grammar section of Unit 2, students will review the basic forms of infinitives and learn how to use an infinitive as the subject of a sentence, as the object of a verb, as an object complement, or as an adverbial. Type of lesson: Grammar (1.5 lessons) Teaching goals: 1) Get students familiar with the uses of infinitives and the verbs that can be followed directly by an infinitive and verbs that can have an object and an infinitive (with to); 2) Enable students to use infinitives in various situations. Key points and difficult points: 1) Enable students to use infinitives as subjects; 2) Enable students to learn by heart the verbs that infinitives are often used together with: verbs followed directly by an infinitive -- like, learn, need, plan, try, want with, start and prefer; Verbs that can have an object and an infinitive (with to) – advise, cause, force, invite, remind, tell, allow, encourage, get, order, request, want, ask, expect, inform, permit, teach, warn. 3) Enable students to use “it” at the beginning of the sentence as empty subject to refer to the infinitive. Teaching aids: multimedia, chalk and blackboard Teaching procedures A: Infinitives as subjects (20 mins) Step 1 Lead-in 1) Question: How long does it usually take you to get to school? For example, it usually takes me twenty minutes to get to school every morning. Unfortunately, a terrible accicent happened this morning, so it took me nearly an hour to get there. 2) review the structure: it takes somebody time to do something. Step 2 Draw students’ attention to the infinitives. Point out that the infinitives are used as subject in the two sentences above. (1 min) Step 3 Provides students with more examples to make sure they can understand and apply infinitives as subjects. Example sentences: To tell lies is wrong. Or: it is wrong to tell lies. To make speech here is an honour. Or: It is an honour to make a speech here. It is not good for you to smoke so much. It was sensible of you to accept that offer. It is a pleasure to work with them! How relaxing it is to bathe in the sun on the sand! Isn’t it a good idea to put on a short play? Step 4 Summarize the tips on infinitives as subjects. a) 动词不定式是由to 和动词原形构成,有时to可以省略。 b) 不定式可以作主语。在大多数情况下,常用it作形式主语,将不定式后 置。常用的结构有: ?It takes/took (somebody) (some time) to do (something). e.g. It takes him ten minutes to walk there. ?It costs/cost (somebody) (some money) to do (something). e.g. It cost 100 yuan to get the TV set repaired. ?It + be+形容词+of/for+名词或代词+ to do (something) e.g. It is so kind of you to bring us the good news. Step 5 Activity – Work in pairs One student should make a sentence with an infinitive at the beginning and the other should change the sentence into one with “it” as the empty subject. For example: wise, think carefully before making a decision S1: To think carefully before making a decision is a wise. S2: It is wise to think carefully before making a decision. B: Infinitives used as objects of verbs (6 mins) Step 1 Write on the board the sentences below from the Reading passage: I am so tired, but I don’t want to let my audience down. ( Line 21) I’d like to ask you a difficult question. (Line 39) Step 2 Help students understand that infinitives are used as the object of the verbs here. Tip: 不定式可以作动词宾语——动词+不定式 Step 3 Tell them that some other verbs, such as like, learn, need, plan, try, want, wish, start and prefer, can be followed directly by an infinitive (with to). Step 4 Write on the board the following sentence from the Reading passage: In fact, it’s so easy that even my driver knows how to answer it. (Line 46) Step 5 Explain to students that some verbs can also be followed by a wh- word (what, when, where, which, who, how) with an infinitive. Tip: 不定式可以作动词宾语——动词+疑问词+不定式 C: Infinitives used as object complement (6 mins) Step 1 Write on the board some sentences in which infinitives are used as object complements. Help students recognize the verbs that can be follow by an object and an infinitive. Tip: 不定式可以作宾语补足语,此时句中的宾语是不定式的逻辑主语 Step 2 Encourage students to think of more verbs of this kind and make sentences. C: infinitives used as adverbials (6 mins) Step 1 Raise the following question: Why did Einstein go to a distant university one evening? Step 2 Ask students to give complete answers, and write them on the board: One evening, Einstein went to a distant university to give a lecture about his theories. Step 3 Tell students that infinitives can be used as adverbials to express purpose, and have the students make sentences using this grammar form. Tip: 不定式可以作目的状语 Activity (10 mins) Step 1) List the sentences with a verb followed by “to” in the Reading passage, and ask the students to sort out which sentences use “to” with infinitives and which use “to” as a preposition. as a preposition with infinitives led to (Line 4) his attempt to (explain) (Line 3) said to (Line 15) used to (say) (Line 6) on their way to (Line 18) received … to (explain) (Line 12) listened to (Line 25 /34) It’s a pleasure to (drive) (Line 16 /53) was guided to (Line 31) have to (give) (Line 20) want to (let) (Line 22) I’d like to (ask) (Line 39) how to (answer) (Line 47) offered to (drive) (Line 51) Step 2) write on the board several sentences with infinitives as objects, object complements and adverbials of purpose. Then ask students to categorize them. Examples: When it was young, the dog learnt to catch a ball. As the day was hot, Grandpa wanted to take a bath. What would you prefer to do this Sunday, play badminton or go to the cinema? The doctor advised Mary to drink more water. He asked his neighbor to take care of his baby when he was away. The general ordered his army to stand at attention. To get more information about Einstein, the students turned to the Internet. To write novels more quickly, the writer bought a computer. I got up early to catch the first bus. Exercise B1 and B2 on Page 24 (18 mins) Homework (1 min) Write a short passage that uses as many infinitives as possible. After-class reflection: (to be added after class)
