This thesis mainly contains two parts: Mao Ronggui, Fu Zhongxuan and other people’s elaboration on translation aesthetics theory; the other part is concrete examples analysis which has applied aesthetic processing in Chinese version of The Kite Runner. This thesis pays more attention to concrete analysis of various examples, and through the process of comparing original work with its Chinese version elaborates from the angles of phonetic level, lexical level, syntactic level and artistic conception level. It endeavors to combine theory with grounds, aiming to understand specific and positive influence in translation brought by aesthetics. These three criteria are still used by many translators. But with the improvement of academic level, more advanced and specific criteria are put forward by diligent specialists in their monographs. In the process of translation, Aesthetic subject and aesthetic object are involved which refer to translator and version respectively (Liu Miqing, 2005: 222-225). This theory is complemented: there are two aesthetic objects; they are original text and its translation, because translation involves two languages (Fu Zhongxuan, 1998: 6). In order to create a high quality translation, translator must have the awareness of where beauty lies in the original text and the target version. The beauty of English lies in its sound, word, sentence and logic (Mao 3 / 8 Ronggui, 2005: 111-181). The beauty in Chinese lies in form, sound, word, sentence and artistic conception (Mao Ronggui, 2005: 190-216). To tell the truth, there is still argument in the criteria of judging whether a version is good or not due to the fact that people’s subject sensibility varies greatly. Another factor we must take into consideration is when and where the translator stays. That is to say, translation involves so many factors that it couldn’t be concluded completely. Translation aesthetics is not the only standard. But it is an important guide theory to create good translation and to appreciate. 1.2 Definition of Translation Aesthetics Translation aesthetic is defined as following words: the research object of translation aesthetics in translation is aesthetic object which consists of original text and version. In order to reproduce the sense of beauty in versions, grasping and obeying to original text is preliminary. Firstly, in the aspect of form beauty, attentions are paid to at least three levels, namely, phonetic level, lexical level and syntactic level. Rhythm is the most obvious character in 5 / 8 phonetic level. Given the fact that there are huge differences between phylums, rhythm in accordance with original text is not a must. But if it can be achieved, luster and reading enjoyment are added. Vocabularies make up sentences which show meanings which convey a great number of information. Using rhetoric is reflected through vocabularies too. It is safe to say that words’ meaning is the elementary component of text content. This thesis puts more efforts on elaboration and illustration for applied meanings. Aesthetic Representation in The Kite Runner This part will give concrete examples and elaborations on the topic from the angels of four levels and try to conduct a relatively in-depth analysis. 3.1 Beauty of Sound 7 / 8 Unlike poetry, idioms and verse, novels do not bear many remarkable characteristics in the phonetic level. However, writers can add more literary appeal to novels through adopting some devices in the phonetic level so that translators do the job to the target version.
