We are witnessing more and more international business dealings taking p lace in multicultural contexts,so we have to know more about intercultural communication to better improve our competence of intercultural communication and be skillful and at ease in intercultural communication. You have the book at hand. As you can see, the book is divided into 10 units, introducing, exploring some important issues in intercultural communication. It can also be understood as a discipline学科。As a phenomenon, it is called 跨文化交际. As discipline, it is called跨文化交际学Some people make the distinction but some people don’t. They just use跨文化交际for both. What is intercultural communication? It’s actually fairly simple. It refers to communication between people of different cultural background. For instance, if you talk with your American teacher, intercultural communication takes place. If you interact with Japanese students, there’s intercultural communication. It includes international communication, interracial communication interethnic, interregional,intracultural communication. If Japanese Prime Minister communicate with American President, then we can say there’s international communication, because this’s communication between two nations/countries. Interracial communication is also a kind of intercultural communication. There’s Afro—American, White—American in the State. If Afro—American interact with White—American, we have interracial communication. In China, if a Tibetan communicate with a Han, then we have interethnic communication. Because they are from different ethnic groups. And interregional communication is also a kind of intercultural communication. There’s cultural differences between the south and the north. If a northerner interact with a southerner in China, we have interregional communication. Intracultural communication within the same culture, between the people of different gender, different age, different career, different status, different educational background etc Intercultural communication as phenomenon is really universal. That means it takes place everywhere. When you talk with a British lecturer, you are having intercultural communication with him. When you correspond with a western customer through e-mail, you are engaged in intercultural communication. When you watch an American film or read a French novel,are you engaged in intercultural communication? Yes. Although you don’t see the American person or French person, the American person or French person is actually talking to you through the film or novel. So you’re actually engaged in intercultural communication with him or her. Intercultural communication dated back to thousands years ago. A long time ago when people started intermingling with each other, when people were having trade relation with each other, there’s intercultural communication. There’s an example of silk growth. A lot of traders from different countries interact with each other in their business procession. There’s intercultural communication. Of course, now intercultural communication is daily occurrence. That’s it takes place almost every day. Now in today’s world intercultural communication has become increasingly important because it’s now so easily for people of different cultural background to come together and communicate. Intercultural communication has greatly increased because of these reasons. First modern means of transport, jet plane now fly everywhere, it used to take months to travel from Shanghai to Los Angeles but now it takes only twelve hours. It is much easier for people move from one country to another People of different countries and races get together much often than before. Besides, people get in touch with each other in various ways including the internet, the telephone, the satellite etc. Innovative communication systems have also help to increase intercultural communications. There’s globalization of the world economy. This means multinational companies now operated in many countries in the world. They employ people of different ethnic groups of different countries. Actually some multinational companies make a point of employing people from different countries. They don’t use people from just one country. Because their company is multinational companies and they want to use people from different countries. Finally, there’s large migration, millions of people move across national broader every year. All these contribute to the fact that intercultural communication is now a daily occurrence. It’s important and is now being recognized by an increasing number of people. Intercultural communication as a discipline first started from the USA and this is easy to understand because USA is a land of immigrant. People come from many countries in the world. They come from Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia. These immigrants came to USA, and they had to communicate with each other, so they had a lot of chances of intercultural communication. New immigrants also arrived every year by millions. Large numbers of foreign students and tourists also came to USA, so in the big city like New York, Los Angeles, you find people of many different ethnic group, and people of different races. In typical American campus you’ll find students from different parts of world. So intercultural communication is very common in USA. Besides, USA has many multinational and transnational companies with employees and offices around the world.
