Go with the choice that scares you
When I was a child, my mom never let me ascend a height because she was afraid that I would fell down. So for a long time, I thought I had acrophobia. And I didn’t dare to try any extreme sports even entertainment facilities in amusement park, because I also had motion sickness. Until this May, hadn’t I ever been to an amusement park. Finally, I plucked up my courage to ride the roller coaster and drop machine at Happy Valley. And it turned out that I didn’t feel any uncomfortable but kind of loved the exciting feeling. I began to regret that I had lost a lot of fun during my childhood. Then I was imagining that maybe I would follow my dream to be a pilot if I had known that I could actually handle this.
Similar things happened in September when there was an International colorectal conference held by our department. I was asked to do some assistant work like room arrangement for committee members who came to attend the conference. This was a difficult and troublesome task, and nobody would like to do that because last year someone who did this work got driven crazy and was seriously blamed by our leader. So I became a good candidate to be the target for the reason that I was a fresh. I was really worried and scared not because it was tough but because I was afraid of dealing with different people whom I did n’t know at all. I was shy and talked little. That was just my personality which I couldn’t control. However, I had no choice but to do it.
On that day, I worked from 8 am till 1 o’clock the following day coordinating rooms with hotel receptionists, pacifying committee members who couldn’t wait to check in, and arranging bunks reasonably and cautiously in order to make sure there wouldn’t be any bunk empty so that we could mostly save expense which was the most important thing that leaders cared. I was surrounded by almost ten people who kept asking me for priority. And I had to explain and answer them smilingly and politely at the same time with only one mouth! But to my surprise, I didn’t sink into a mess. I communicated with everyone smoothly and fluently. And my bad memory didn’t attack on me, instead, I almost remembered everyone’s information. I could totally handle with these problems and I had done a good job. At last, I got praised and all my colleagues started to sit up and take notice of me.
These experiences made me understand a truth: Always go with the choice that scares you the most, because that’s the one that is going to require the most from you. You can always find your potential talent and receive harvest in the fields which you never dared to get in.
