express feelings and ideas.In this paper,many fresh examples and vivid pictures are meticulously selected by the author from the relating English and Chinese books,magazines and internet etc.The author attempts to discuss the identity,functions,and the importance of nonverbal communication especially,its application and influence in English classroom-teaching. 关键词:Nonverbal communication;Communicative functions;English classroom-teaching 1 Introduction The study of nonverbal communication is a relatively recent development.Most individuals seem to agree that nonverbal communication hold an important role in social relationships.Marcel Marceau once asked,"Do not the most moving movements of our lives find us all without words?" ,1,Amiel said,"Time and space are fragments of the infinite for the use of finite creatures.",2, However,compared with western teachers,Chinese teachers do not make good use of nonverbal behaviors in classroom teaching especially,in English classroom-teaching。 2 Definitions of nonverbal communication The expressions of the individual(and therefore his capacity to give impressions)appear to involve two radically different kinds of sign activities: the expression that he gives and the impression that he gives off.The first involves verbal symbols or their substitutes,which he uses admittedly,and solely to convey the information that he and the others are known to attach to these symbols.This is communication in the traditional and narrow sense.The second involves a wide range of action that others can treat as symptomatic of the actor(communicator),the expression being that the action was performed for other reasons than the information conveyed in this way.,1, 3 The application of nonverbal communication in English classroom- teaching From those functions of it,our English teachers’ successful use of verbal and nonverbal communication in a perfect way becomes very important.As we know nonverbal behaviors convey information,teachers do not only act as the microphone of knowledge,but also know students’ attitude towards study through their nonverbal symbols,such as facial expressions,gestures and so on.Teachers should make good use of nonverbal behaviors to communicate with students,and try to establish good relationship with them to lead them into the hall of knowledge.Nonverbal communication is of great value in English classroom- teaching. 3.1 Link up students and teachers We can use nonverbal communication to link up students and teachers .It can enable teachers to impart knowledge to the students smoothly.According to education and psychological research,the development of students' latent intelligence is affected by their emotional state in the process of study,while students' emotional changes are restricted by teachers' nonverbal behaviors.Their facial expressions,eye contact,movements and hand gestures all affect students' mood in study and attitude toward knowledge.Their positive behaviors can not only promote students' intelligent activities but also make students cheerful and relaxed in mind,which is conducive to students' processing,absorbing knowledge and to generating students' motive to study more as well.Many teachers create an extremely friendly atmosphere by crouching down when they work with students in pairs.In this way,they are at the same level as their seated students. 3.2 Draw students' attention It may be a wise idea for teachers to use nonverbal communication behaviors to draw students ' attention and then to organize a better English classroom- teaching.It is difficult for primary and middle school students to concentrate on study consciously for a long time.Thus it is the task of teachers to make them study with great concentration.Teachers' nonverbal behaviors are of great significance in class- teaching.However,a few teachers do not realize it.They raise tones to blame students,beat blackboards and platforms continuously to draw students' attention but in vain.In fact,teachers do not need to shout themselves to students hoarse,but to persuade them through right and quiet nonverbal communication.For example,students are most commonly directed to dip into knowledge by teachers' change of facial expressions,modulation in tone,unpredictable rhythm,conscious movements,as well as space and distance. 3.3 Enhancing students' access to useful information Nonverbal communication can enhance students' access to more useful information.In terms of education and psychology,and the special features of brain: the ability to learn and never stop learning,students can use the information to which they are exposed to change the way they perceive and interact with teachers.For example,in gymnastics and sports courses,body language plays an exemplary role,while speech language only adds necessary information and directions to it.In these courses,students have to imitate what their teachers have performed.In physics and chemistry courses,teachers often use nonverbal symbols such as slider projectors and other tools to demonstrate processes of experiments,which enable students to seek unity of abstract and concrete,think. 3.4 Supplementing to English learning Nonverbal communication is supplementary to learning language and can strength density of information.In the Direct class- teaching,no translation is allowed.Instead,learners are expected to listen,to answer questions,to work in pairs or groups on conversations,to write down dictations,once the written tongue has begun to an object of study,and to write short passages.One of the driving ideas is to put learners in situations in which they are expected to produce the language,and nonverbal communication plays an irreplaceable role in it.For example,when teaching such words as "headache"," stomach",and " toothache",teachers can hold their heads,stomachs,and teeth with brows knitting,as if they have suffered so much pain to that they utter sounds which are associated with ideas.In this way,students do not need to translate,but the native language words are directly linked with the object that the teachers represent.As a result,students acquire languages directly and naturally. 3.5 Improving efficiency in English classroom-teaching Nonverbal communication is essential in English classroom-teaching because it usually helps teachers to impart knowledge to students perceptually and imperceptibly."Western scholars think that nonverbal communication in class-teaching is much more effective than verbal and regular teaching and learning." ,8, For example,when the teacher taught,“KINDHEARTED”,students and the teacher looked at video of the “THE SNOW WHITE”.After that,the teacher asked them to role- play IT.Thank to nonverbal communication,the teacher made great success in class- teaching,and the students learned a lot from it at the same time. 4 Conclusion Human communication is a wholesome fusion of both verbal and nonverbal acts.On one hand,means of verbal communication is being improved along with the fast pace of social development,on the other hand,as an irreplaceable communicative means,nonverbal acts are supplementary to verbal,and to some extent,are more simple,more vivid,and truer than verbal in conveying information.
