A Book Report of Great Expectations
By Tianxiao, class 3, 2011
Great Expectations, Charles Dickens’s thirteenth novel, was first
published in the pages of his weekly magazine All the Year Round
between December 1860 and August 1861.Over hundreds of years ,the novel has been adapted into movies, TV series and stage plays. The leading character Pip narrates his three-stage life stories from 7 years old in the form of autobiography. The gist of the story is as follows.
Pip,a poor orphan, was brought up by his doggish and coarse sister Mrs. Joe. His brother-in-law Joe was an honest and kind, amiable and good blacksmith who really cared about Pip. At first, Joe set an ordinary and full life road for Pip that was to be an excellent blacksmith like himself. And Pip was glad to .However, his meeting with Miss Havisham, a rich old maid, and Estella, her adopted daughter changed his attitude towards life. He was shocked by their dignity and pride.” She said I was a coarse and
common boy.” When Pip said this to Biddy, his sister’s friend, he
was sad and hurt .As a consequence, he desired to become a gentle man one day and marry Estella. At the moment, he knew it was impossible, so he worked at Joe’s forge as an apprentice
unambitious.Fortunately he had a chance to study in upper class in London with the help of a mystery. As he thought it was Miss Havisham that aided him financially on purpose and made him worthy of Estella, he accepted the favor with pleasure. Arrived London, he made new friends and changed his life style. He fooled around, ate his head off all the days .He became selfish, peacockish and forgot his original intention.Afterwards, the mystery actually came to light. His sponsor wasn’t Miss Havisham, but Magwitch, a
convict, whom Miss Havisham hated bitterly. And Estella was just his daughter with another woman. Apparently Miss Havisham intended to make Estella a grim woman to revenge Magwitch. What a devil woman! Then his benefactor was arrested, Estella married, Pip realized the reality and thoroughly rectified his errors and eventually led a new life. In the end, Pip sister died and Joe married Biddy, Miss Havisham regretted and died, Magwitch died of illness in prison. Pip and Estella missed their beautiful youth and stayed with each other forever.
When I read this novel, I first was touched by the relationship between Pip and Joe. It is friendship rather than kinship. Joe is so kind and tolerant a big brother for Pip. He always said to Pip,”
We’re the best friends forever.” When Pip went London to pursue
upper class life, he was unsatisfied but didn’t prevent him. When
Pip came back ill and indebted, he not only gave him comfort mentally but paid Pip’s debt quietly. Estella is another distinct
character. She attracted men by her beauty, and treated them sometimes hot and sometimes cold till they were tormented deeply then she abandoned them ruthlessly. She was worthy of sympathy. She had been raised with only one purpose--to break men's hearts, in revenge for the time when Miss Havisham was deserted on her wedding day years ago. She was a sacrificial lamb of Miss Havisham. What impressed me most was Miss Havisham, a
merciless and vicious rich woman. Her wealthy family led to her personality. She can’t bear any deceit and betrayal .She spent all
her life revenging but in vain. She realized her fault in the end and asked Pip for forgive. Pip is a well-rounded portrayal of character. His life can be divided into three stages. At first, he was innocent, kind, and generous. He had helped a convict. Afterwards, he was absorbed in luxurious life, becoming greedy and selfish. At last, he realized the money and social status is not the most important thing in life. What is important is love and loyalty. Man’s true value has
nothing to do with his money and status.
The theme of this novel is simple: love, loyalty, and conscience are more important than wealth and social status. Charles Dickens also told us that if a person tries to gain wealth and social status by deceit, he’ll never success. As author’s saying,” No more lies, live
well and live happy.”
Pip is the narrator and the main character of Great Expectations and possibly also the voice of the author.Through Pip, Dickens is working out all his worst feelings about himself.
Dickens is a master of language. His words are ironic and humorous. For instance, the title of the book is ironic, for all that Pip hopes for turns to dust.I appreciate e this book. I’d like to
recommend it to learners at my level. It is not too difficult, so we can get the ideas easily and learn something about the author’s writing skills at the same time. It is really worth reading.
