Older scouts will either paddle or hike into the site while younger scouts will backpack the 3 miles into camp. This is an excellent trip for newer scouts to earn accomplishments toward rank advancement. 1. Part of the instruction for the weekend will be canoeing skills. Everyone who has passed [past] the swim test will have the opportunity to work on their paddle skills. 2. The backpacking part of the trip serves 2 purposes. , First it will fulfill the first requirement for Tenderfoot - Present yourself to your leader, properly dressed, before going on an overnight camping trip. Show the camping gear you will use. Show the right way to pack and carry it. , Second it will introduce scouts to the concept of backpacking. The Troop does at least 2 backpacking weekends a year and this will provide an idea of what to expect. Mr. DeDuck will be leading the backpacking contingent into the camp site. The length is about 3 miles. 3. Scouts that need to work on the requirements through first class should make a list of what they need and present it to their Patrol Leader. The Patrol Leaders will then work with Jake Penders to develop a program best suited for the weekend. Scouts should bring their Handbooks in a ziplock bag with a pen for sign offs. 4. Mr. Avis is planning a nighttime activity with compasses so if you have a compass bring it with you. This will be an opportunity for you to earn points for your patrol.
