Amazing Wilderness Areas B I still remember my hands and my fingers still remember — what used to lie in store for us on our return to school from the holidays. The trees in the school yard would be in full leaf again and the old leaves would be lying around like a muddy sea of leaves. “Get that all swept up!” the headmaster would tell us. “I want the whole place cleaned up, at once!” There was enough work there, to last over a week. Especially since the only tools with which we were provided were our hands, our fingers, our nails. “Now see that it’s done properly, and be quick about it,” the headmaster would say to the elder pupils, “or you’ll have to answer for it!” So at an order from the elder boys we would all line up like peanuts about to cut and gather in crops. If the work was not going as quickly as the headmaster expected, the big boys, instead of giving us a helping hand, used to find it simpler to beat us with branches pulled from the trees. In order to avoid these blows, we used to bribe (贿 赂) the elder boys with the juicy cakes we used to bring for our midday meal. And if we happened to have any money on us, the coins changed hands at once. If we did not do this, or if we were afraid of going home with an empty stomach or an empty purse, the blows were redoubled. They hit us so violently and with such evil enjoyment even a deaf and dumb person would have realized that we were being beaten not so much to make us work harder, hut rather to beat us into a state of obedience (服从) in which we would be only too glad to give up our food and money. Occasionally one of us, worn out by such calculated cruelty, would have the courage to complain to the headmaster. He would of course be very angry, but the punishment he gave the elder boys was always very small — nothing compared to what they had clone to us. And the fact is that however much we complained, our situation did not improve in the slightest. Perhaps we should have let our parents know what was going on, but somehow we never dreamed of doing so; I don’t know whether it was loyalty or pride that kept us silent, but I can see now that we were foolish to keep quiet about it, for such beating was completely foreign to our nature. 24. The statement “my hands and my fingers still remember” (Para. 1) means that ________. A. the author seldom did such hard work as the cleaning up B. the author’s hands were his only tool for the cleaning C. the author’s hands were severely injured in the cleaning up D. the author was bullied by the big boys in the cleaning up 25. The headmaster would tell the students to clean up the school yard at the beginning of the term because ________. A. the students didn’t finish their homework B. the school yard were covered with mud C. he was too lazy D. there were many fallen leaves on the ground 26. The headmaster asked the elder boys to ________. A. beat those who worked slowly B. treat the small boys as peanuts C. lake charge of the process of the cleaning D. do the cleaning all by themselves 27. According to Para. 3, if the author had any money on him, he most probably ________. A. gave it to the big boys so as to please them B. gave it as a bride to the headmaster C. spent it all on his midday meal D. spent it buying midday meals for the big boys C If you want to convince the boss that you deserve a pay rise or promotion, the solution could be simple — eat the same food as they do. Psychologists have discovered managers are much more likely to instantly trust us if we choose the same dishes as them. During experiments, discussions over wages and work conditions were much more successful if both sides chose to snack on the same treats. And shoppers were much more likely to buy a product advertised on TV by someone eating a similar kind of food to them at the time. The reason is thought to be so-called similarity attraction theory — where people tend to like others who have similar tastes or habits to themselves. But this is believed to be one of the first studies highlighting the role of food in this relationship. Researchers at Chicago University in the US conducted a series of experiments to examine food’s role in earning trust. In a test, participants were told to watch TV — where someone pretending to be a member of the public praised a certain product. The volunteers were given Kit Kat bars to nibble, while the TV people ate either a Kit Kat or grapes as they talked. The results showed viewers were much more likely to express an interest in buying the product if the TV showed the other person eating a Kit Kat too. The researchers added, “Although similarity in food consumption is not a sign of whether two people will get along, we find consumers treat this as such. They feel more trusting of those who consume as they do. It means people can immediately begin to feel friendship and develop a bond, leading to smoother transactions from the start.” Harley Street psychologist Dr. Lucy Atcheson said it was already known that wearing similar clothes could instantly create trust. But this was the first report that food had the same effect. She said, “This is really interesting. It makes sense as people feel they have the common ground and can trust the other person. Thai means negotiations are more likely to the successful.” 28. According to the passage, customers are likely to buy a product from a dealer who ________. A. advertises his products on TV B. reduces the price of his products C. has the same taste as them D. pays attention to the quality of his products 29. The experiments conducted by researchers at Chicago University show that ________. A. food plays an important role in earning people’s trust B. bosses like employees that have the same taste as them C. people who have similar tastes to their boss’s earn more D. people have less interest in buying products advertised on TV 30. What can be inferred from the passage? A. People who eat similar food are more likely to trust each other. B. People will get along with each other if they like to eat similar things. C. The effect of wearing similar clothes hasn’t been proved by researchers. D. People are more likely to make friends with those wearing the same clothes as them. 31. Which of the following sayings can be an example of the similarity attraction theory? A. Honesty is the best policy. B. All good things come to an end. C. Birds of a feather flock together. D. Where there is a will, there is a way. D Every year, billions of kilograms of fresh produce are wasted in the United States. The food ends up in landfills, producing harmful greenhouse gases. Meanwhile, millions of poor Americans go hungry, without access to healthy, affordable meals. Evan Lutz is passionate about correcting that social injustice. And he combines that goal with a passion for business. “My entire life I’ve wanted to become a social entrepreneur, not just starting a business that made money but also starting one that gave back. I’m just an average guy with a passion towards making sure no food goes to waste and making sure no person’s ever hungry in America and I want to do that through business. Lutz is CEO and founder of Hungry Harvest. Hungry Harvest is a business which collects and sells “ugly” produce. These are fruit and vegetables that most food companies would throw away. “If you go to a grocery store everything is growing the same exact way. Right. So all that stuff that doesn’t grow the same way gets wasted and gets thrown out. And we take all that stuff that normally gets thrown out because it’s too big or too small in odd size of shape, we box it up into a variety boxes and we deliver them to our customers once a week. We hire people that were living in homeless shelters. They were really looking to get a chance in life.” In January 2016, Lutz appeared on the American business competition television show “Shark Tank”. It connects investors with entrepreneurs. Lutz sought a $50,000 investment in Hungry Harvest, in exchange for a five percent stake in his company. He got even more than he expected: $100,000 for 10 percent ownership. 32. The purpose of writing the first paragraph is to ________. A. tell us how serious the waste is B. inform us many people have not enough to eat C. remind us of the unfairness of the society D. lead to the topic of the passage 33. There is no denying that people who like the mobile phone are concerned about its attractive functions. Phubbers can’t stop sending messages, surfing the Internet, listening to music and even taking photos by using the mobile phone. Moreover, some people have less time to relax themselves. They make use of the time when they are on the way to school or other places to play mobile games. However, phubbing disturbs not only our study but also our life. On the one hand, phubbers waste lots of time playing cell phone games and sending messages, particularly in class. Other people also complain they are disturbed when phones ring in classrooms. On the other hand, it can lead to health problems. For instance, using a mobile phone on the sofa can cause back and neck pain. As far as I am concerned, it is high time that we threw away the phone and raised our heads up. Do cherish everything around us and appreciate the scenery ahead of us. What’s more, we should do more exercises and take part in real-life activities. In a word, only when we use the phone reasonably, can we realize the happiness of life.
