Half-Life of Candium Lab
Question: What is the half-life of candium?
Materials:
- 100 candium atoms (skittles or M&Ms pieces)
- Stopwatch
- Resealable bag
- cup
- graph paper
Procedure:
1. Pour 100 candium atoms into a cup from the resealable bag.
2. Gently shake cup for 1 minute.
3. After 1 min, gently pour out the candium atoms on lab table.
4. Count the number of candium atoms with letter side up. These atoms have
decayed. Record the time, and the number of decayed and undecayed atoms
in data table.
5. Return decayed atoms to resealable bag. Return undecayed atoms to the cup.
6. Repeat steps #2-5 until all candium atoms have decayed.
7. Create a line graph of undecayed atoms over time. Time is always on the x-
axis. Undecayed atoms are on the y-axis.

Time # of Decayed Atoms # of Undecayed Atoms
Analysis:
1. Define half-life in your own words.
2. In the experiment, what was the half-life of candium – based on the graph?
3. At the end of 2 half-lives, what fraction of the atoms had not decayed?
4. Describe the shape of the curve from the graph of your data?
