The Bush administration regards same-sex education as a cure-all for
what ails the nation's public schools. Part of this may be true if th
ey think males and females need different styles of education and att
ention. However, in the 21st century, in such a competitive society, a
female can’t request to be treated differently in a job because she
is a female. Co-ed schools not only nurture students to be academical
ly successful through equality, but also provide them with an environ
ment that they can’t obtain from single-sex schools.
Wendy Kaminer, a Smith graduate said, “All female schools are ‘mode
ls of equivocation’. They reinforce regressive notions of sex differ
ence while at the same time helping women into professions.” In 70s
and 80s, it was relatively liberal for women to be educated in same-s
ex schools; they were well aware of the differences in education for
boys and girls and the abilities that each gender had on different th
ings. However, women, most of the time, were stereotyped as only good
at housework, clerical job, nursing, and child education. On the oth
er hand, men were considered the main support to a family, and genera
lly capable of doing more than women. This view has been gradually ch
anged over the years. Women are trying to improve their roles in soci
ety, and they strive to prove they can be just as good as men. If sex
segregation continues, female students in same-sex schools will not
be given equal chance to see they may do better or even excel over me
I am a great example to support this standpoint. I’ve attended
a co-ed school since I was seven years old. My classmates and I had b
een told by some teachers that girls couldn’t excel on scientific su
bjects. Although it was wrong of the teachers to say such discouragin
g words to female students, I never gave up on studying scientific su
bjects harder. By neglecting such comments from teachers and concentr
ating on studying math, physics, and chemistry, I achieved better gra
des and surpassed most boys in my class with the efforts I had put in.
It is important that women be put in equal nurturing and competing p
ositions, with no conscious influencing thoughts that women are infer
ior on some aspects compared to men. They can prove themselves as goo
d as men on academics and in career choices.
Secondly, co-ed schools provide an interactive environment for boys a
nd girls to study together so they can learn from each other.(支持CO
It’s true that there are clear distinctions be
tween males and females. However, by separating them and giving diffe
rent educational concepts, they may still develop their individual ac
ademic strength, but they won’t be able to observe or compare advant
ages and disadvantages between males and females in the same situatio
n.(先说明SINGLE-SEX SCHOOL的正面,然后提出它的弱点) (举例) For exampl
e, in a research assignment, a male student can do mechanical jobs ef
ficiently, but he may lack the ability to organize and find faults wh
ereas a female student who is better at these aspects may help him. T
hus, the male student can benefit from this cooperation and learn how
to perform better next time. The same applies to the girl in learnin
g as regards the mechanical skills from her male partner. Co-ed schoo
ls provide the reciprocal and interactive opportunities for male and
female students so that they can learn from each other and make progr
ess simultaneously.
It is not only academic strength that makes a student successful in t
he future – social skills, teamwork spirit, and networking prolongs
the success on career paths. Single-sex schools can potentially form
a “false protection” for boys and girls in the long run.(反面) Boys
and girls in same-sex schools only communicate and make friends with
the same sex. On the contrary, co-ed school is like a miniature of th
e society. Coed school’s students not only interact with everyone on
a daily basis, but also their social horizons can be enlarged. They m
ake male and female friends who may become their future “business pa
rtners” or “social guides”. Boys learn how to communicate with gir
ls in teamwork; girls’ confidence is enhanced when both male and fem
ale classmates acknowledge them.
Our ultimate goal is to make the education system better. Sex segrega
tion makes it harder to find a good way to educate students comprehen
sively and make both genders’ academic progresses parallel. Only by
considering both genders as a unified entity can we overcome the acad
emic shortcomings of the educational system. Boys and girls educated
in a co-ed system can then have a wider scope of future accomplishmen
