Qian Zhongshu dug deep into the social life and traditional cultures in the special periods of Chinese history in his novel Weicheng and the readers, amused by Qian’s humor, will naturally come into serious recognition and understanding of various absurd social phenomena. Furthermore, the novel will also make readers think about what’s behind those phenomena. Because of the specific language features of the novel, there have been various pragmatic researches on this novel. This dissertation will take the characterized utterances in this novel as the discourse to explore various translation strategies that the translators adopted in order to maintain the special style of the novel and its dialogues. Conversational implicature is an important part of the main theories of pragmatics. In our daily life, it is easy to discover that the same utterance may yield different meanings when it happens in different contexts and cultures. And the intentions of the speakers will also influence the meaning of the same utterance. Therefore, the implications in a conversation may differ as the contexts, cultures and the intentions of the speakers change. So it does in the dialogues in the fictions. The implications of the dialogues in the fictions will also differ due to the factors such as the source-language and target-language cultures, the contexts of the dialogues and the intentions of the characters’ words in the fiction. According to this theory, cooperative principle is the main component and this dissertation is based on the violations of cooperative principle. It should be pointed out that in order to make the study more focused, this dissertation will concentrate its study on the violation of the im of quality, which is a sub-principle of cooperation principle. This dissertation will endeavor to explore the methods of the translators when they are handling the cultural specific dialogues in the fiction and discover the new translation methods that they have adopted in order to keep the implicatures and the special features of the dialogues.
