The novel describes a woman who has the character of self-improvement, self-esteem and pursuing freedom and equality. This paper aims to analyse the character of Jane Eyre. " Jane Eyre " is the masterpiece of the British writer Charlotte Bronte. It is a classic work in the history of English literature. It successfully creates a firm woman character which has adverse life, poor background and the pursuit for freedom and equality. This is a long-length novel in which many plots are from the author's personal experience. And it is a long-length novel which contains the author’s heart and strong spiritual pursuit. It attracted thousands of readers with its irresistible beauty. In the past one hundred years, " Jane Eyre " is always charming because of the key point that the character shaping of the heroine by author. The author aims to explore the spirit in the heroine’s heart, making the character of pursuing freedom and equa lity living in people’s life. The experience of the whole novel " Jane Eyre " can be divided into several stages: the aunt’s home, Lowood Institution, Thornfield, Marsh End, back to Thornfield. Jane Eyre gives us moving and shocking with her unique personality in every stage. The novel begins with the description of the small Jane Eyre’s living in her aunt's family. Jane Eyre becomes an orphan when she is very little and she is adopted by her uncle. After his uncle is dead, she has to suffer maltreat from her aunt. She is insulted by her brother and sister and she cannot feel warmth and happiness. The description of the psychology of a child who suffers a lot is very vivid. The ten years old Jane Eyre described in the book takes a book from shelf, as a result, she is beaten by her brother without any reason. She is puzzled and angry,“why am I always been insulted. Why should I always suffer a lot ”. The little Jane Eyre wants to resist. She scolds her brother is a murderer. Because of that, she is closed in a “red house” which hurts her heart a lot. She is filled with unfairness in her heart. The rudeness of her brother, the arrogance of her sister, the hating by her aunt and partiality of the servant make her become mature whe n she is young. She dares to resist. She hates her aunt,“people think you are a good woman, but you are bad and cruel.” The description of the miserable child of a child who suffers a lot is very vivid. One critic ever evaluated “Jane Eyre”,“nobody could d escribe Jane's child better.” We can find that she knows the injustice in the society from the experiences of living in her aunt’s family. Furthermore, the experiences in Lowood charity Institution shows Jane Eyre’s tenacious personality. The Lowood Institution on the surface is a charity school, actually it is a hell on earth. Poor living conditions, harsh and despotic system make Jane Eyre accentuate her character of resisting. Here the author avoids too much plots in which she has conflict with the environment, and pays more attention on the description of the girl Helen, making the obvious comparison between their character in order to show the brave and firm spirit of Jane Eyre. When Helen is punished to be beaten, the choice of Helen is patience. But Jane Eyre says that she would choose to resist and hate her. When Helen gets a serious disease, Jane Eyre’s secretly going to see her and the sincere dialogue between this two girls, all these subtle description, show that Jane Eyre’s character of braveness, firmness and sincere. Jane's childhood is lonely and cold during which Jane becomes a woman who dares to resist. Then when she grows up, she still protects her personality just like the protection of her life. And the experiences in Thornfield deepens her character of resisting firmly. In the aspect of maintaining female independence, advocating independent marriage and the equal rights between men and women, we can find that Jane Eyre’s character of rebellion. The life in Thornfield is the main part of the whole novel, and it is the new stage of Jane Eyre’s personality development. Jane Eyre is full of resistance, and she is never subject to the forces of evil because she has a kind of spirit that general women don’t have.As the heroine of the novel, Jane Eyre is different from the previous women images in literary works in nineteenth Century. Other heroine in loving stories is beautiful, gentle and noble, but Jane Eyre is not very beautiful. Although the above-mentioned fact, she has a heart which is full of wisdom, firmness and braveness. What is more valuable is that Jane Eyre never feels self-abased because of her poverty and inferior appearance. In contrary, she is brave and firm. It is her self-esteem and firm spirit that attracts Rochester very much. Rochester is shocked and moved because of Jane’s independent personality, the pursuit of equality and unremitting self-improvement. In the novel , the following original text, “Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal —as we are!”, this paragraph brings readers shock, Jane Eyre uses her own words and action to show that she has the right to pursue loving which belongs to herself equally. When knowing Rochester having the wife, Jane Eyre leaves him firmly and determine not to be his lover. She doesn’t pursue present comfort and happiness, but sincerity, rationality, self-esteem and equality. Jane Eyre’s view on love deepens her personality. In her opinion, love should be based on the equal spirit, not social status, wealth and appearance. Leaving Thornfield, Jane Eyre comes to Marsh End, meeting John. Although this part describes the loving clue between Jane and John, it shows more about Ja ne Eyre’s persistent loving of Rochester. From Jane’s heart, we can find that Jane Eyre’s loving of Rochester is so strong and sincere. Facing John’s proposal of marriage, Jane Eyre almost can’t control herself. At the same time, she suddenly hears the calling from Rochester. Rochester also hears Jane Eyre’s response. They get the grace of God at the same time, and a mysterious voice connects the two loyal mind together. Under the guidance of God, Jane Eyre returns to Rochester. At this time, The manor is in ruins. Rochester is blind and his left hand is disabled. Finally, Jane Eyre gains the true love, and living with Rochester happily. The novel ending is designed to be a happy ending. Although Rochester's manor is destroyed and Rochester also becomes a disabled person, we can see that it is the condition that Jane Eyre does not lie in the contradiction between love and dignity, and she want both love and dignity. Perhaps it is because of the author's personal experience, Charlotte Bronte let the heroine have a beautiful ending. It also reflects that the author wishes the better future life. Through the description of people’s character, "Jane Eyre " makes a woman who is lonely and helpless, but has persistent pursuit and efforts retain in every read ers’ brain forever. Women in any age explore their own life, thought and love with the literary works in the nineteenth Century. Jane Eyre is the symbol of women ideal and pursuit which is beyond time and space, becoming the eternal in everyone’s hearts.
