ACaseStudyonInterculturalCommunicationCaseSatementProfessorJohnson,aprofessorofChicagoBoothbusinessschool,wasinvitedtogiveaguestlectureataChineseuniversityintheearlysHecouldtellthestudentsthattheywereveryattentiveTheyapplaudedwarmlywhenthelecturecametoanendHowever,whenprofessorJohnsonaskedwhethertheyhadanyquestionstoaskhim,allofstudentskeptsilenceandevensomestudentsloweddowntheirheadsProfessorJohnsonwasdisappointedwhennooneaskedanyquestions,evenaftertheywereencouragedtodosoInfact,moststudentsavoidedeyecontactwithhimashetriedtocommunicatewiththemTheanalysisoftheCaseIthinkthisanexampleoffailedinterculturalcommunicationInmyopinion,theremaybethreereasonsforthefailureofthisinterculturalcommunicationFirstly,ChineseopiniononthepowerdistanceisverydifferentfromthatofAmercicansPowerdistanceasacharacteristicofaculturedefinestheextenttowhichthelesspowerfulpersoninsocietyacceptsinequalityinpowerandconsidersitasnormalTheUnitedStatesisalowpowerdistancecountryAmericansbelievethattheyareclosetopower,shouldhavereadyaccesstothatpowerandemphasizethateveryoneisequalSodoteachersandstudentsSothestudentcaninterrupttheteacher’steachingashispleasure,andevencanputforwardhissuspicionsfortheteacher’sspeakingcontentinthefaceofhisclassmatesWhileChinaisahighpowerdistancecountryChinesebelievethatpowerandauthorityarefactsoflife,andsocialhierarchyisprevalentandinstitutionalizesinequalityInourtradition,theteacherisacertainsocialstatusoftheprofessionalandnowadaysstillhasperformanceundertheenvironmentofmoneyfirstTheteacherrepresentsauthorityandrepresentstheexperienceProverb,"Adayfortheteacherlifelongforfather",embodiestheChineserespecttoteachersChinesestudentsregardteachersaspersonsfromahighpowerclass,sotheydon’tdoubttheauthorityofteachersThisiswhyChinesestudentsdon’tliketoaskteachersanyquestionsattheclassIftheyhavesomequestions,theyprefertoaskaftertheclassTheycanleftthefacebydoinglikethisSecondly,theeducationalmodleofAmericaandofChinaarequitediefferentIntheUnitedStates,thetraditionaleducationmethodistrialanderror,thatistosay,studentsrepeattopracticebythemselvesandtomakemistakes,sofinallytheyunderstandwhatisthetruthyThissituationoftenrequirestudentstolearntobemoreautonomic,whiletheteacher’staskistoanswearquestionsandnottoinculcateknowledgeSoAmericanteachersliketoaskquestions,andtobeaskedatthesametimeWhileinourcountry,themostcommoneducationalwayistowatchandlearn,thatistosay,whentheteachertellsyouwhatitis,studentsjustneedtorememberitItistheallthingsthatstudentscandoinourclassroomThisisonereasonforthepassivelearningofChinesestudentsSoChinesestudentsarelessautonomicthanAmericanstudentsTheydon’tliketoaskanyquestionsThirdly,themeaningofeyecontactisdifferentinChinaandintheUnitedStatesIntheindividualismculture,whenpeoplespeaktofaceeachothereyes,thisisaconfidentperformance,becauseintheirculture,modestyisnotvirtueAndFaceuptootherseyesalsocanshowtherespecttoothersAndintheeast,avoidingeyecontactmeansrespectThispointisparticularlyobviousintheJapanesecultureWhentheytalkwiththeireldersorsuperiorstheyoftenlowtheirheadsInmyopinion,thispointisnotapplicableintoday'sChina,becausemoreandmorepeoplerealizethatitisverypolitetokeepeyecontactwiththeotherswhentheyaretalkingConclusionIninterculturalcommunication,WehavetoremindourselvestopayattentiontothespontaneousemotionalexpressionsofothersandthesituationswheretheinteractiontakesplaceWehavetorememberthatempathycanbeincreasedifyouresistthetendencytointerprettheother’sverbalandnonverbalactionsfromyourownculture’sorientationTobesuccessfulasaninterculturalcommunicator,peopleshouldbecomesensitivetothevaluesandcustomsoftheculturewithwhichpeopleareinteractingThemorecultureweknowaboutthetargetlanguage,themorelikelywecansucceedincontactOnlycombininglinguisticskillandculturalskill,canithelptoavoidpragmaticfailurewhichiscausedbyculturaldifferences继续阅读
