This protects other creatures and plants in the ocean. During recent years, business and sport fishing killed one million or more sharks. Most sharks reproduce only every 2 years and they give birth to fewer sharks than they did 10 years ago. For this reason, overfishing of sharks is a danger to the future of the animal. Huh? A college counselor tells you not to lock into plans? What’s that all about? Actually, Nancy isn’t the only counselor advising students to take their time in discovering who they are and what they want to do when they get out of college. "Preparing broadly makes sense to me,"she explains,"that the best preparation for a future that’s still unfolding is a broad preparation. It shouldn’t prevent you from following areas that light you up, but a broad preparation will prepare you for multiple careers. That’s important because jobs change more frequently due to changes in technology and business competition. Some jobs that are available today may be on their way out in 10 years. The best thing about preparing broadly is that you get to live in a big world. You avoid getting typecast in a job or business area, and if your job becomes out of date, you can move on." Students let the"next-step mind"interfere with their learning as well. Many students don’t take courses outside their comfort zone for fear it will ruin their GPA (grade point average) and their chances of getting into a certain college."You may be reluctant to go outside your areas of strength for fear you’ll get a low grade,"says Nancy."But if you think one grade in one class will ruin your chances of admission, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Colleges look at a number of factors in addition to grades. Students often think of requirements for colleges as much tighter and narrower than they really are." Since colleges work to admit a diverse group of students, the best thing to do is be yourself and explore your options."I know of many people in their late 20s who are unhappy in their careers and who regret that they didn’t pursue a wider range of interests while in college." Her advice to students:"Think about who you are right now. You have certain preferences. You have areas you like to study. You have certain skills."She suggests using interest surveys to help you gain a sense of where your interests and skills can lead you. "Follow your nose and find a college that will support and encourage you academically and socially. Have faith in yourself and the things you like to do,"she adds. 58.What does Nancy advise college students to do in Paragraph 3? A.Make full use of their free time. B.Get work experience as much as possible. C.Make practical career plans with determination. D.Equip themselves in advance for more career chances. 59.What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A.Many college students refuse to learn other things beyond their strength. B.Preparing broadly for future plans is really useful for college students. C.Most colleges value students with a good command of social skills. D.Requirements for applying for colleges become stricter and stricter. 60.What does the passage mainly want to tell us? A.How to study as efficiently as you can. B.Don’t be stuck with a"next-step mind". C.Realize your dreams with reasonable plans. D.How to choose an ideal college for yourself. 【答案】 58.D 59.A 60.B 【解析】 58. 根据第三段的内容,尤其是"a broad preparation will prepare you for multiple careers""The best thing about preparing broadly is that... you can move on"可知,Nancy建议大学生们应该尽可能大范围地为自己将来可能从事的一种至多种工作做好准备,提前用更广泛的知识武装自己。 59. Many students don’t take courses outside their comfort zone for fear it will ruin their GPA (grade point average) and their chances of getting into a certain college"和"You may be reluctant to go outside your areas of strength for fear you’ll get a low grade"可知,很多学生除了自己的强项之外不去涉猎其他的领域。 60. Once architect Frank Lloyd Wright built a house for businessman Hibbard Johnson. One rainy evening Johnson was entertaining guests for dinner when the roof began to leak. The water leaked through directly above Johnson, dropping steadily onto his bald head. Angry, he called Wright."Frank,"he said,"you built this beautiful house for me and we enjoy it very much. But ... the roof leaks, and right now I’m with some distinguished guests and it’s leaking right on top of my head."There was a pause on the line, and Frank replied,"Well, why don’t you move your chair?" Just when we’d like to have everything perfect in our lives, the roof springs a leak into even the best constructed and waterproof lives. Leaks happen. We have a choice, we can sit under the leak and complain, or we can regain our joy by moving our chair — changing our perspective. Now, some will point out that the reason they have no joy in their lives is that they don’t have a reason to be joyful. They have a lot of leaks in their roof. Life seems like it’s fallen apart. They aren’t satisfied with their job, if they even have one. Their family has problems. Their health isn’t good. Their car is under repair. They just can’t see a"reason"for being joyful. It’s hard to be joyful when life is going against you. It’s hard to be joyful when you’re struggling with troubles, or defeated by pain, or unsure of your future. But there’s a problem with that approach to life. If we wait till everything turns out the way we want them to in our lives or we’re not going to be joyful until all the leaks are repaired in the roof of our lives...THEN we’re never going to experience joy. There’s an alternative. You don’t have to wait until you’re happy with your life. Deep spiritual joy in your life will always bring you happiness. But the pursuit of happiness won’t always bring you joy. People have a hard time understanding the difference. Worldly (世俗的) happiness almost always relies on some situation or event to make us feel good. If something good happens, we’ll feel good, but if something bad happens, we won’t. By contrast, spiritual joy doesn’t depend on present situation. In fact, spiritual joy can often exist despite our circumstances. Don’t let other people steal your joy. If the roof is leaking and you can’t get someone to fix it right away, move your chair. Change your perspective. Lay hold of joy and take control of your circumstances, rather than swinging with your emotions and continuing to look for happiness. 61.What’s the purpose of mentioning Frank Lloyd Wright? A.To show his success in architecture. B.To introduce the topic of the passage. C.To show his talent for communication skills. D.To tell readers how to deal with leaking roofs. 62.What can we learn about Frank from his reply? A.He felt sad at the news of his bad work. B.He refused to admit he had done a bad job. C.He suggested changing to another solution. D.He was good at creating happiness for others. 63.When we are faced with"leaks", we should try to . A.wait for them to be repaired with patience B.face the trouble with a positive attitude C.control our negative emotions determinedly D.insist on making efforts to repair them 64.What is the best title of the passage? A.Why don’t you move your chair? B.Isn’t there a better alternative? C.How to take hold of spiritual joy D.Don’t let other people steal your joy 【答案】 61.B 62.C 63.B 64.A 【解析】 61. We have a choice, we can sit under the leak and complain, or we can regain our joy by moving our chair — changing our perspective"可知,Frank的回答是建议Hibbard Johnson换一种解决方法,即换个角度看问题,故选C。 63. If the roof is leaking...Change your perspective"可知,作者认为当我们面对像"屋顶漏水"这样的问题时,我们应该试着换个角度思考问题,即要以积极的态度来应对问题。 64. 文章第一段以一个故事中富含哲理性的回答"why don’t you move your chair?" What is one of the most boring and tiresome words ever? Like discipline, responsibility is one of those words you have probably heard so many times from authority figures that you have been a bit allergic to it. Still, it’s one of the most important things to grow and to feel good about your life. Without it as a foundation nothing else in any personal development book really works. It’s been said that the line between childhood and adulthood is crossed when we move from saying"It got lost"to"I lost it". Indeed, being accountable, understanding and accepting the role our choices play in the things that happen are important signs of emotional and moral maturity. That’s why responsibility is one of the main supports of good character. Many people have been refusing to grow up and avoiding the burdens implied in being accountable. Yes, responsibility sometimes requires us to do things that are unpleasant or even frightening. It asks us to carry our own weight, prepare and set goals and exercise the discipline to reach our ambitions. But the benefits of accepting responsibility are far more important than the short-lived advantages of refusing to do so. No one makes his or her life better by avoiding responsibility. In fact, irresponsibility is a form of self-forced servitude (苦役) to circumstances and to other people. George Bernard Shaw once said,"People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people whoget onin this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.""Man must stop owing his problems to his environment and learn again to exercise his will — his personal responsibility in the realm of faith and morals,"said Albert Schweitzer. The following incident shows blaming others and not taking full responsibility: Bernard L. Brown, Jr., once worked in a hospital where a patient knocked over a cup of water, which spilled on the floor beside the patient’s bed. The patient was afraid he might slip on the water if he got out of the bed, so he asked a nurse to mop it up. The patient didn’t know it, but the hospital policy said that small spills were the responsibility of the nurse while large spills were to be mopped up by the hospital’s housekeeping group. The nurse decided the spill was a large one and she called the housekeeping group. A housekeeper arrived and declared the spill a small one. An argument followed."It’s not my responsibility,"said the nurse,"because it’s a large puddle (水坑)."The housekeeper didn’t agree."Well, it’s not mine,"she said,"the puddle is too small." The angry patient listened for a time, then took a pitcher of water from his night table and poured the whole thing on the floor."Is that a big enough puddle now for you two to decide?"he asked. It was, and that was the end of the argument. So, responsibility is about our ability to respond to circumstances and to choose the attitudes, actions and reactions that shape our lives. It is a concept of power that puts us in the driver’s seat. The grand sight of the potential of our lives can only be appreciated when we begin to be accountable and independent. If you want more control over your life and the pleasures, power of freedom and independence, all you have to do is be responsible. Responsible people not only depend on themselves, but show others that they can be depended on. 65.What can we learn about responsibility? A.It’s of secondary importance to discipline. Without it as a foundation nothing else in any personal development book really works"可知答案。 66.考查词义猜测。根据上下文语境可知,此处表示的是在世界上获得成功的人是那些站起来,寻找他们想要的处境的人。故get on在此处意为"获得成功",同B项的Succeed含义相近。 67.考查推理判断。根据第三段中的"But the benefits of accepting responsibility are far more important than the short-lived advantages of refusing to do so... irresponsibility is a form of self-forced servitude (苦役) to circumstances and to other people"可知,逃避责任的人享受不到承担责任带给自己的更为重要的好处。 68.考查推理判断。根据第四段中的"The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them"可知,George Bernard Shaw暗示人们在任何处境中都要勇于承担自己的责任。故选A。 69.考查细节理解。根据倒数第二、三段的内容可知,这位病人之所以感到生气是因为应负责任的双方都在推卸责任,故选D。 70.考查推理判断。根据最后一段的内容,尤其是"responsibility is about our ability to respond to circumstances and to choose the attitudes, actions and reactions that shape our lives""Responsible people not only depend on themselves, but show others that they can be depended on"可知答案。 五、任务型阅读:共10题 I’m in Paris today with several world leaders for a big announcement about energy and climate change. It’s deeply moving to be in this city just two weeks after the horrific attacks here, and I’m inspired by the way the French people have persevered in such a difficult time. Two related proposals are being announced at the event. One is Mission Innovation, a commitment by more than ten countries to invest more in research on clean energy. The other is Breakthrough Energy Coalition, a global group of private investors who will support companies that are taking innovative clean-energy ideas out of the lab and into the marketplace. Our primary goal with the Coalition is as much to accelerate progress on clean energy as it’s to make a profit. Here’s the thinking behind these two efforts. The world is going to be using 50 percent more energy by mid-century than it does today. That should be good news, especially for the world’s poorest, because right now more than 1 billion people live without access to basic energy services. Affordable and reliable energy makes it easier for them to grow more food, run schools and hospitals and businesses, have refrigerators at home, and take advantage of all the things that make up modern life. Low- and middle-income countries need energy to develop their economies and help more people escape poverty. But the world’s growing demand for energy is also a big problem, because most of that energy comes from hydrocarbons, which emit greenhouse gases and drive climate change. So we need to move to sources of energy that are affordable and reliable, and don’t produce any carbon. The renewable technologies we have today, like wind and solar, have made a lot of progress and could be one path to a zero-carbon energy future. But given the scale of the challenge, we need to be exploring many different paths — and that means we also need to invent new approaches. Private companies will ultimately develop these energy breakthroughs, but their work will rely on the kind of basic research that only governments can fund. Both have a role to play. I’m honored to be a part of this event. It’s great to see so many government leaders and investors making these commitments and showing how the public and private sectors can come together to work on big problems. I’m optimistic that we can invent the tools we need to generate clean, affordable, reliable energy that will help the poorest improve their lives and also stop climate change. I hope even more governments and investors will join us. 【答案】 71.proposals 72.commit 73.accelerating 74.access/afford 75.poverty 76.Solutions 77.producing 78.explore 79.funded 80.invented 【解析】 71.信息概括题。根据右框中的内容和文章第二段中的"Two related proposals"可知答案。 72.信息转换题。根据第二段中的"a commitment by more than ten countries to invest more in research on clean energy",并将关键词"commitment"进行转换可知答案。commit sb./oneself to doing sth." Our primary goal with the Coalition is as much to accelerate progress on clean energy as it’s to make a profit"可知答案。 74.信息转换题。根据第三段中的"especially for the world’s poorest...access to basic energy services"和"Affordable"可知答案。 75.直接信息题。根据第三段中的"Low- and middle-income countries need energy to develop their economies and help more people escape poverty"可直接得知答案。 76.信息概括题。根据下面列出的内容可知,此处指的是解决方法,故填Solutions。 77.信息转换题。根据第四段最后一句中的"produce"可知答案。 78.信息转换题。根据最后一段中的"we need to be exploring many different paths"并将关键词"exploring"进行转换可知答案。 79.信息转换题。根据最后一段中的"their work will rely on the kind of basic research that only governments can fund"可知答案。 80.信息转换题。根据最后一段中的"we can invent the tools we need"可知答案。 六、书面表达:共1题 81.请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150 词左右的文章。 Every teacher instructs students in a different way, and some methods are to be more popular with students than others."Tough love"— treating students as individuals who must take responsibility — isn’t always what students want. But for me, it’s the most effective teaching method of all. Mr. Seltzer, my eighth-grade English teacher, was the example of high standards. His tests were difficult and seemed fit for a college student. Pop quizzes could be given at any time. Our homework was always the most. Throughout the year, we wrote frequently and Mr. Seltzer expected us to produce quality work every day. He graded our work"cruelly". Low grades were common. When I saw my low grades at the start of the year — in the 70s, I realized that I could easily fail the class. By the end of the year, I had an 80 average. It meant more to me than a 90 from another teacher though this was lower than I was used to. Because an 80 from Mr. Seltzer was a real achievement. Mr. Seltzer’s"tough love"made me a better student. From the passage we know the author introduces his teacher whose"tough love"makes him a better student."Tough love"may look cruel but it is really an effective method for many students. Many students hope their teachers should be kinder and don’t set up too many rules to control them. They even wish their teachers to give them higher scores to make their parents happy. But they haven’t realized the disadvantage of"soft love", which will ruin them in the long term. Tough love may make students feel frustrated but it is the best way to make students get real success. My math teacher was a responsible teacher; tough love shown in her teaching helped all the students make progress. If we made mistakes in written work, we were required to rewrite the assignment. My study improved in this way and I now perform extremely well in high school.
