It's a waste of time. 5 UNCLE'S FARM Raymond: What a beautiful Day, Jane. Would you like to go out and get some fresh air? Jane: Y es. Where do you plan to take me? Raymond: Why don't we go to my uncle's farm on the Seven Stars Mountain? It's a quiet but interesting place. Jane: Are there any creeks or lakes? Raymond: Y es, there is a stream and a lake right in front of the farm. My uncle keeps many ducks there. Jane: Can we go fishing there? Raymond: Sure! I'll go get my rod and tackle box now. Jane: What are we going to use for bait? Raymond: We can either dig out some earth worms in my yard or buy some shrimps in the market. Jane: Will your aunt and uncle be home? What movie is showing? 7.It's a documentary. 8.How long does it last? 9.It lasts about two hours. 6 CHINESE KUNGFU Jane: What happened? Why are you walking with a limp? Did you break your leg? Raymond: No, but i sprained my ankle when I was practicing kungfu last night. Jane: Did you see a doctor? Raymond: Y es, I saw a Chinese bone doctor. Jane: What did the doctor say? Raymond: He didn't say anything. He just soaked my ankle in some herbal medicine and then put a patch on it. Jane: Y ou shouldn't be so crazy about kungfu. It's just an excercise. Raymond: No, it's more than an exercise. It's a martial art, too. Besides, it's the best way to help people develop themselves both physically and mentally. Jane: Let's drop the subject. I hate kungfu, it's merely brutal violence. I believe yoga is a far better way to develop oneself physically and mentally. Raymond: How could you say that, Jane? Y ou know nothing about kungfu. It's one of the most precious parts of Chinese culture. Jane: I'm sorry, Raymond. I didn't mean to hurt you, but you can't make a living teaching kungfu. Raymond: I don't teach kungfu to make a living. I teach kungfu to promote Chinese culture. Jane: Maybe you're right. We should never deny the values of our traditional culture. 7 A LADY FROM AUSTRIA Linda: Excuse me, could you please tell me how to get to the student center? I am new on this campus. Raymond: Y es, please follow me. I happen to be going there, too. Linda: Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. Raymond: Do you mind telling me your nationality? Linda: No, I don't. I am from Austria. Raymond: Why have you come to Taiwan? Linda: I came to study Mandarin. Raymond: Do you speak any Mandarin now? Linda: No, I don't. I just arrived. Raymond: How long have you been in Taiwan? Linda: Two weeks. Raymond: Did you see the parade? Linda: Y es, it was wonderful. Did you see it? Raymond: Y es, I saw it on TV. By the way, where are you living now? Linda: I’ve been staying in the China Hotel since I arrived. I am looking for an apartment, but it’s not easy to find one. Raymond: Is anyone helping you?
