Typically, critical incidents consists of examples of cultural clash events - situations where unexpected behavior occurs - with suggestions on how to solve these situations. The purpose of the critical incident technique is to develop one's ability to see interaction situations from perspectives of different cultures. Critical incidents in intercultural communication training are brief descriptions of situations in which a misunderstanding, problem, or conflict arises as a result of the cultural differences of the interacting parties, or a problem of cross-cultural adaptation and communication. Each incident gives only enough information to set the stage and then describes what happened and possibly manifests the feelings and reactions of the people involved. It does not explain the cultural differences that people bring to the situation; these are meant to be discovered or revealed as part of the different activities. Critical incidents are often used as tools for increasing our awareness and understanding of human attitudes, expectations, behaviours, and interactions. They are intended to engage participants at a meaningful, personal level as they examine attitudes and behaviours that might be critical to their effectiveness in the roles they are already performing or preparing for (in the workplace, in educational settings, and in society at large). Study the following example: Christopher and his wife were sent to the Tokyo office of his company's joint venture partner for one year. Christopher really liked his new position; his Japanese colleagues were dedicated and interesting, his boss was extremely competent, and the office had a pleasant atmosphere. He had heard, though, that his Japanese colleagues were socially very conservative. Christopher was lucky enough to find an affordable home in a location about one hour's commute for him and convenient to shopping for his wife.Christopher also enjoyed going out after work with his colleagues about twice a week. Each time he did so, he called home to tell his wife that he'd be late because he was going out "with the guys." She was unhappy, however, because Christopher's social life rarely included her. At one of these outings for drinks, his older colleagues joked that Christopher was "tied to his wife's apron string." (The actual, more graphic expression means that he is "sat upon" by his wife.)Why did Christopher's colleagues tease him about his wife? 1. Because Christopher called his wife each time he went out with them. In Japan, men usually do not call their wives to tell them they'll be late. 2. Because Christopher's wife was unhappy whenever Christopher went out with his workmates. In Japan, wives are not supposed to complain about anything their husbands do. 3. Because Christopher found a home in a location convenient for her but not too convenient for him. In Japan, a man's job is of paramount importance, so couples normally live near the husband's workplace even if the location is not convenient for the wife. 4. Because Christopher brought his wife with him to Japan. In Japan, men normally leave their wives behind if their foreign assignments are as short as one year. For the final project, you are expected to design a critical incident and then come up with an explanation to debrief the case to a group of people who are receiving your intercultural training. Please form groups of 4 to work on this project. Your team-work process is in effect an intercultural communication process. As an intercultural communication learner, pay attention to your teammates’ communication styles and your own as well, and also watch how your team resolve conflicts and reach agreements. After you have completed your designing of the critical incident, get ready to present it to your class. Your presentation, including both showing the incident and explaining the answers, will be limited to 10 minutes. Your presentation will be graded according to these criteria: originality of the story, relevance to your experiences, clarity in showing and explaining the incident, team-work and time management. Don’t forget to submit the written work of your presentation. Good luck! 答案   补充作业2(2010-10-15--2010-11-30)   题目内容:   Reflection Paper 1: My Cultural Story and Identity This assignment is intended to develop your self-awareness as a cultural being. CHAPTER OVERVIEW At the dawn of the twenty-first century, Marshall McLuhan's vision of a global village is no longer considered an abstract idea but a virtual certainty.  Technological and socio-political changes have made the world a smaller planet to inhabit.  The technological feasibility of the mass media to bring events from across the globe into our homes, businesses, and schools dramatically reduces the distance between peoples of different cultures and societies.  Telecommunication systems link the world via satellites and fiber optics.  Supersonic jets carry people from one country to another faster than the speed of sound.  Politically, the end of the cold war has brought decades of partisan tensions to an end.  Countries that were once bitter enemies are now joining forces.  Mass migrations force interaction between people of different races, nationalities, and ethnicities.  Noted historian and Pulitzer Prize winner Arthur Schlesinger warns us that history tells an ugly story of what happens when people of diverse cultural, ethnic, religious, or linguistic backgrounds converge in one place.  The hostility of one group of people against another, different group of people, is among the most instinctive of human drives.  Schlesinger contends that unless a common goal binds diverse people together, tribal hostilities will drive them apart.  By replacing the conflict of political ideologies that dominated in the twentieth century, ethnic and racial strife will usher in the new millennium as the explosive issue.  Only through intercultural communication can such conflict be managed and reduced. Only by competently and peacefully interacting with others who are different than ourselves can our global village survive. TEST ANSWERS Multiple Choice 1.    Communicating and establishing relationships with people from different cultures can lead to a number of benefits, including healthier communities, increased commerce, reduced conflict, and a.    personal growth through tolerance. b.    reduced illegal immigration. c.    increased legal immigration. d.    increased agenda setting opportunities. 2.    The largest micro-cultural group in the United States is a.    Asian-Americans. b.    Hispanics. c.    Middle Easterners. d.    African-Americans. 3.    Communication is considered a process because a.    it is contextual. b.    it is always developing. c.    it frequently stops and starts.
