1.0                 Purpose: 1.1                 To determine if the product markings can withstand an abrasion (eraser) and or resistance to solvents testing to determine if the markings shall remain legible.      1.2                 To determine if the product coatings can withstand an adhesion (scotch tape) test to determine if the coatings shall not fail immediately.                       2.0                 Application: 2.1                 Upon request.   3.0                 Definitions: 3.1                 N/A   4.0                 Associated Materials: 4.1                 Motorola Spec. 12S22968 -“Marking of Component Parts”. 4.2                 Motorola Spec. 12M05020A95 - “Material or Methods Specs”. 4.3                 MIL-STD-202F, Method 215J –“Resistance to Solvents”.                  5.0                 Responsibility: 5.1                 It is the responsibility of the Test Lab Manager to ensure conformance to this procedure. 6.0                 Procedure: 6.1                 Abrasion (Eraser) Testing: 6.1.1            Painted/Plated/Sublimated surfaces shall withstand a specified number of cycles when subjected to wear testing. Refer to Motorola Specifications 12S22968 and 12M05020A95. 6.1.2            Using a weighted “pink pearl” eraser, the surfaces accessible to human touch shall be subjected to 1500 grams for 1000 cycles. Areas not accessible to human touch such as the narrow surface areas between keys or buttons shall be subjected to 500 grams for 150 cycles. 6.1.3            Fixture number 698900172 shall be used for this test.    6.2                 Resistance to Solvents Testing: 6.2.1            Painted/Printed surfaces shall withstand specified solvents when subjected to wear testing. Refer to MIL-STD-202F, Method 215J –“Resistance to Solvents”.   6.2.2            Completely immerse two (2) samples in each of the three (3) specified solvent mixtures labeled A, C and D for three (3) minutes.    6.2.3            Immediately following immersion, each specimen shall be tested as follows: The wetted bristle portion of the brush is used to apply ten (10) strokes in a forward direction over the area of interest.    6.2.4            Immediately after brushing, the procedure shall be repeated two (2) more times, for a total of three (3) immersions, followed by brushing.   6.2.5            After the completion of the third immersion and brushing, the samples shall be air-blown dry.      6.3                 Adhesion (Scotch Tape) Testing: 6.3.1            Painted/Coated/Pad Printed  surfaces shall withstand an adhesion (scotch tape) test. 6.3.2            Score the entire painted surface of each sample with a new sharp fine razor blade.   6.3.3            The scoring method should attempt to create a uniform and consistent grid pattern.  The ultimate goal is to   score the samples in such a manner as to create a series of small squares.  Note:  This task shall be performed by hand and generally on contoured surfaces.   6.3.4            apply scotch tape (standard) to the scored areas.  The tape should cover the entire area and make good contact with the coated film.  Allow the tape to sit on the surface of the scored areas for one (1) minute.   6.3.5            Remove the tape, paying close attention to the amount of paint being removed if any.   6.3.6            Document all coating removal with photographs linked to the formal TRL.
