Teaching Important Points Get the students to learn some different patterns to give advice and make suggestions. Teaching Difficult Points How to give advice and make suggestions in a less direct way of speaking to make the listener feel more comfortable. Teaching Methods Create some situations for the students to talk actively in public. Practice to master the different patterns of giving advice and making suggestions. Teaching Aids a multimedia computer,blackboard Three Dimensional Teaching Aims Knowledge and Skills Get the students to learn to how to give advice and make suggestions. Help he students learn to give advice and make suggestions in a less direct way of speaking to make the listener feel more comfortable. Process and Strategies Help the students learn to grasp ways to express their advice and suggestions. Feelings and Value To improve students’ ability to give advice and make suggestions to show their considerateness for others. To improve their communicating ability and skills. Teaching Procedures Step 1 Greetings T:Good morning/afternoon,class. Ss:Good morning/afternoon,Mr./Miss... Step 2 Lead-in T:If you have any problems,what do you usually do? S:Turn to good friends,parents and teachers for help. T:Do they usually give you helpful advice and suggestions? S:Yes. T:Now,suppose that your best friend has a problem,and he/she turns to you for help,how will you give him/her advice and suggestions? Which kinds of sentence patterns do you usually use? (Ask some students to give the sentence patterns.If they cannot give all the patterns,ask them to look at the books.) Step 3 Giving advice and making suggestions: T:When we give advice and make suggestions,we usually try to use less direct way of speaking in order to make the listener feel more comfortable.You can use the following patterns: 1.I advise you to do... I advise that... My advice to you is that... 2.If I were you,I would do... 3.I suggest (that) you (should) do... I suggest doing... T:Pay attention here,advice is an uncountable noun,and advise is a verb. Pay attention to the predicate verb form in the if-clause and the usage of advise in Pattern 1 and suggest in Pattern 3. T:Now,please translate the following sentences. (Show the Chinese on screen.) 1.我建议你骑车去那里,不要乘公交车。 I advise you to go there by bike instead of by bus. 2.老师经常给我们如何学好英语的建议。 Our teacher often gives us advice on how to study English well. 3.他建议我早点睡觉,不要太劳累。 He suggests that I (should) go to bed a bit earlier,to avoid being tired. 4.如果我是你,我会买那条裙子。你穿那条裙子很合身。 If I were you,I would buy that dress.It fits you well. T:We can use some other patterns to give advice or make suggestions.For example: You’d better take off your wet clothes,or you’ll catch a cold. Let’s start the meeting now. T:Sometimes we also use questions to make suggestions,like the following: 1.Don’t you think it would be a good idea to do...? 2.Why don’t you do...? Why not do...? 3.Shall I/we...? 4.What/How about...? T:Can you make some sentences with such patterns? T:Now,turn to Page 36.Look at the second part.Andy and John are talking about what they are going to do at the school sports day.Would you please read the dialogue in pairs and underline the sentences which give advice and make suggestions? Answers: Andy:I’m not sure which activity to do at the sports day.Any suggestions? Andy:Are you joking? Do you think I can beat Mike in Class One? Andy:No.Do you think I should try the long jump? John: John:But I haven’t practiced for a long time.Andy:That’s a good idea.John:Yes. Step 4 Offering advice to your friend: T:Next,I’d like you to do pair work.Look at the instruction in Page 37.Suppose your partner has asked you for some advice on training for a school competition.In order to advise him/her on the best way to train,you will need to ask him/her a few questions.One of you ask some questions,and the other answer the questions.Remember you should take notes of your partners’answers and complete the chart in this part. T:Next,I’d like you to discuss with your new partner and offer some advice and suggestions for the new training programme and daily routine,with the information you have gathered above. (Ask the students to change partners.) Possible example: My advice is: ·I advise you to take more exercise during the week—perhaps three or four times each week. ·I suggest that you have three servings of vegetables and four servings of fruit per day. ·If I were you,I would not drink soft drinks.Why don’t you drink water instead? You should drink ten glasses of water every day. ·I advise that you go to bed no later than 10 p.m.every night. ·I also advise that you have at least 8 hours of sleep every night. ·I suggest that you shouldn’t spend too much time in the Internet café or playing computer games.
