My parents are musicians, so they were both very encouraging. It was their dream, I think, to raise a child who could one day become a world-class pianist. So they asked an expensive personal teacher to teach me, and I practiced every day, sometimes for five or six hours at a time. Despite(尽管)the long hours and frustration(挫折), I did enjoy it, especially at first, and I was good. According to my parents and my teacher, I was really excellent, and I was on the road to becoming a professional musician, just like my mother and father. The trouble was, my head really wasn't in it. My real interest was something quite different—mathematics(maths). Numbers were the things that really shone brightly in my mind. I found more beauty in a mathematical equation(相等), I told my parents, than in a piano sonata(奏鸣曲). So when I went to college, I chose to study mathematics, not music. Then I got a job, working as an accountant. Now I work with numbers every day. My parents couldn't understand, and even now I guess they are still angry with me. They say I wasted a special gift. But I still believe what I did was right for me. 1.It cost the writer's parents a lot to ________. He shows a hard floor cleaning system(系统)that's built into the wall: it will blow dirt to a part of the room where it will be collected by a vacuum(吸尘器). Then the system will drop some cleaner on the floor and an arm will mop(用拖把擦)it up. “This may trouble you,” says Kara, an expert in Mason's company. “But you can program it to come on at 3 a. m., and it will just wet-mop the floor for you.” When it comes to the kitchen, Bruce Beihoff, another expert at Whirlpool, is sure that in a few years, robots will be doing most of the boring work, freeing us to relax. “More than just fun, future kitchens will be environmentally friendly,” he says. “A new system will be built in the house which can recycle energy(能量)lost from your kitchen to make the whole home warm.” “The fridge will be the center of the home,” says Daniel Lee, a market expert. The fridge will have a touch screen(触摸屏幕)where you can watch TV, surf the Internet, check your e- mail, keep a shopping list and order vegetables. “Your fridge is the first place you go in the morning and the last place at night,” says Lee. Ever wonder why a 1.9-meter man and a 1.6-meter woman have to cook meals on counters(工作台)of the same height. “The height was decided over 50 years ago, according to the height of ordinary women,” says Jane Langmuir, an expert of cooking machines. “But times have changed. We have made a new counter where you press a button and it moves to whatever height you want.” At the same time, Ted Selker at MIT's Counter lab has made the Dishmaker which lets you make dishes and bowls out of plastics at home. But there was one thing which he found the most interesting. In his diary Thomas wrote, “When the Italians eat meat, they use small forks. They do not eat with their hands, because people do not always have clean hands.” Before leaving for England, Thomas Coryate bought a few forks. At home Thomas had a dinner party to show the invention to his friends. When the steak(牛排)was brought out, he took out a fork and began to eat as they did in Italy. Everybody looked at him in surprise. When he told his friends what the fork was, they all wanted to take a good look at the strange thing. All his friends said that the Italians were very strange people because the fork was not easy to use at all. Thomas Coryate tried to prove(证明)that his friends were wrong. He said it was not nice to eat meat with one's fingers because they were not always clean. Everybody got angry at that. Did Mr. Coryate think that people in England always had dirty hands? And weren't the ten fingers we had enough for us? Thomas Coryate wanted to show that it was very easy to use the fork. But the first piece of meat he took with the fork fell to the floor. His friends began to laugh and he had to take the fork away. People in England began to use forks only fifty years later. 1.Why did Thomas Coryate bring forks to England? A.He wanted to surprise his friends. B.He believed that it was not nice to eat meat with fingers. C.Forks were beautiful. D.He wanted to make business selling forks. 2.Why did everybody look at Thomas when he began to eat like the Italians? A.They believed that was bad manners. B.Nobody ate meat with hands in England. C.Everybody thought it was an amazing invention. D.Nobody had seen a fork before. 3.People were ________ when Thomas said that they shouldn't eat meat with their fingers. A.unhappy B.sorry C.sad D.worried 4.The first piece of meat fell to the floor when Thomas took it with the fork because ________. A.the fork was very difficult to use B.the fork was bad C.Thomas could not use it quite well D.the steak was too hard B As prices and building costs keep rising, the “do-it-yourself”(DIY)trend(趋势)in the U.S. continues to grow. “We needed furniture(家具)for our living room,” says John Ross, “and we just didn't have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are trying to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week lesson for $ 280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house. Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $ 420. “I was surprised and worried about it. Now I've finished a car repair class, I should be able to fix the car by myself.” John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it-yourself”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don't have time to take a lesson, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself. 1.We can learn from the text that many newly married people ________. A.find it hard to pay for what they need B.have to learn to make their own furniture C.have DIY lessons with their friends D.never go to a store to buy things 2.John and his wife went to evening classes to learn how to ________. A.open a DIY shop B.make or repair things C.save time and money D.improve their lives 3.When the writer says that Jim has a full-time job at home, he means Jim ________. A.makes shoes in his home B.does another job at night C.does his own car and home repairs D.keeps house and looks after his children 4.What would be the best title for the text? A.The Fun of DIY B.You Can Do it Too! C.Welcome to Our DIY Class! D.John and Jim: Believers in DIY C Sometimes, people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy, and what kind of food may do harm to our health. The USDA has prepared a food guide to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat(like fish and chicken), dairy(like milk and cheese), grains(like bread and rice), fruit, and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets. The USDA also suggests(建议)how much of each food group is healthy to eat daily. Though this guide was prepared by the US government, it is very useful for people all over the world. As a result of years of study, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example, Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount(量)of grains, fruit and vegetables. Because of the way they eat, they have a high rate(率)of cancer(癌症)and heart disease. In Japan, people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have a very low rate of cancer and heart disease. The Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart disease and cancer goes up as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers, ice creams and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is going up there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is going up along with the change of the way people eat. Doctors everywhere suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food. Eating healthily is important for children as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat the same way as their parents. When parents eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits. Doctors suggest parents give their children healthier food such as fruit, vegetables and juice. Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. We know that the food we eat affects(影响)us in different ways. For example, doctors believe that fruit and vegetables can really protect people from many different diseases. On the other hand, animal fat can cause(引起)diseases. We can change our eating habits now and enjoy many years of healthy living. 1.What is the USDA in the passage? A.A group of doctors in the US. B.An office of the US government. C.A report on diseases in the US. D.An order given by the US president. 2.The second paragraph mainly tells us that ________. Early kites may have been simple flat shapes such as leaves. Later, kite designs improved as people discovered how to put lightweight coverings over frames. Silk and paper are lightweight materials that were invented in China. China is the earliest known center of kite making. Chinese kites date back(追溯)at least 2,000 years. The first Chinese kites may have been used by armies, perhaps as signals. As time passed, kites took on other uses. They were flown during special ceremonies and for sport. Then there were kite-flying holidays, such as the one held on the ninth day of the ninth month. According to legend(传说), that was the day a family went kite-flying on a hilltop. Returning to their house, they saw that it had collapsed(倒塌). Kite-flying had saved their lives! After a while, travelers and traders spread kite-flying from China to Japan. Before long, Japanese kite-flying took on a new purpose. Kites flew to celebrate happy things and good luck. Soon, kite-flying reached many other Asian countries. In each land, kites were designed for ceremonies and sport. Later, knowledge of kites traveled west, to northern Africa, to Europe, and finally to America. There may have been early kite inventors in these lands, but their creations did not spread as widely as the kites of Asia. 1.What shapes did early kites look like? ________________________________________________________________ 2.What lightweight materials for kites were invented in China? ________________________________________________________________ 3.Which country is the earliest known center of kite making, China or Japan? ________________________________________________________________ 4.What were kites used for in China? ________________________________________________________________ 5.What were kites used for in Japan? ________________________________________________________________ 六、根据中英文提示,完成句子 1.马克•吐温是一位重要的作家,但他并不像孔子那样作为伟大的思想家闻名于世。 Mark Twain was ____________, but he isn't ____________ Confucius. 2.在我的记忆中,我三岁就被送去幼儿园了。 ________________, I ____________to the kindergarten at the age of three. 3.他的歌使他在学生中很受欢迎。 His songsthe ________________________ students. 4.书架上塞满了书,但他至今一本也没看过。 The shelf ____________, but he hasn't read any of them. 5.每年我的父母都会送我生日礼物。 I ________________my parents every year. 七、书面表达 还记得发生在你身上最难忘的一次经历吗?某英文报纸正在以“An unforgettable experience”为题进行征文活动。请你写一篇短文,描述一次难忘的经历,并谈谈你的感想。 参考词语:remember, help, wonderful, feel, think An Unforgettable Experience Everyone has some unforgettable experiences. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 拓展探究 阅读短文,用适当的词填空,使短文意思完整。 The mobile phone is a useful thing, but maybe I don't know 1 to use it. A.key words B.each paragraph C.every choice D.topic sentences 4.In the passage, the writer mainly wants ________. A.to show us the differences between the tests B.to help us to learn how to do well in tests C.to teach us how to find the key words in the items D.to introduce the ways to choose the best answers C We do some strange things when we don't like the way our life is going. Too often we blame(埋怨)someone else. “I wish my parents were more understanding.” “I have such a bad Chemistry teacher!” “My friends are so boring and self-centred. They make my life worse and worse.” Blame! Blame! Blame! It seems natural to sing this self-pitying song, but the truth is, if you don't like your life, you should do something about it. No one else knows exactly how you feel or what you need. No one can read your mind correctly. You are the only one with the power(能力)to check your life, and if you want it to be different, you can change what you're doing. This means asking... “What do I need? What do I want to do?” instead of trying to meet others' needs. For example, try to decide how you want to spend your evening instead of asking somebody else for advice. We teach other people how we want to be treated. If we don't think of our own needs, no one else will either. When you're in trouble, don't give away your power to decide how you feel about yourself. Choose how you want to think and act(行动). Other people can't make you unhappy or angry. They only act in their own way and then it's up to you to decide how you will respond(回应). For example, your friends go out to lunch without you. You feel angry. How are you going to act? You may blame your friends... “They're not kind. Who needs them anyway?” or you may tell your friends how you feel, listen to their explanation(解释), and let them know you'd like to be invited next time. When you decide everything in your own way, you're getting hold of your own life and shaping it according to your tastes and feelings. You can choose to be happy, to make friends and to build an interesting life. When you blame others for what is or isn't happening in your life, you have stopped growing or learning. One of the most important rules is that you can never change another person by your direct action. The only person you have the right and power to change is yourself. Once you change, the other person then has something different to respond to and change is possible. If you want change in your life, begin with yourself...put love into your power to take action. 1.What should we do if we don't like our life? A.Sing that self-pitying song. B.Read our minds correctly. C.Change what we're doing. D.Tell others what we want. 2.If the writer's friends have dinner together without him, he may ________. A.forget it and be still friendly with them B.talk to them and try to find out why C.do the same thing to them in return D.ask somebody else to talk to them 3.What's the writer's idea about how to change others? A.He thinks it's impossible to change others. B.He believes our love can change everything. C.He chooses to talk with others directly. D.He prefers to change ourselves first instead. 4.How many points of view(观点)are mentioned in the passage? A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six. 四、完形填空 “When you start to talk about responsibility(责任), I thought of a time in my life when I didn't want to accept(承担)responsibility for anything,” Elena said. “It was one of the most 1 times of my life. Part of the problem was that I was 3 very unsure of myself.” “I started going around with a group of children who were always in 4 . I guess all of us were unsure, but nobody talked about it. My main responsibilities were 4 tables and washing dishes, but sometimes I helped cook. Every day after school I would 5 to JM's and work until ten. Even on Saturdays I 6 from two until eleven. At that age it was difficult going to work and 7 my friends run off to swim or play. I didn't necessarily like work, but I loved what working allowed me to have. The “Acronym”, our student newspaper, reports that most students go to sleep at 1: 30 a. m. Even if that's an exaggeration(夸张), it's too close to the truth. Scientists say teenagers should sleep nine hours each night. But that's hard to do. Some even “pull all-nighters”. These are lazy students who have homework due(到期)the next day that they haven't done. In the morning they don't look healthy and you can tell who has been doing it. One of my classmates did a survey(调查)on the problem. She found that most kids pull all-nighters to finish homework, but some do it for other reasons, such as playing computer games! Maybe our lack of sleep is because of laziness—I think I'm a lazy student—or maybe it's because we have too much to do in American high schools. I usually go to bed around midnight. If I stayed up past 1: 30 a. m., I wouldn't get any work done. I'd be falling asleep at my computer. My classes begin at 7:30 a.m. I'm partly awake in my first class. By the second, I'm slightly tired and sleepy. By my third class, I'm sleepy. By midday I'm finally wide-awake. But by 3: 00 p. m., I'm slowing down again. Most American high schools seem to have such a problem. High school classes start at 7: 30 a. m., so students have to wake up one and a half hours before that to get ready and catch the bus. It's believed that lack of sleep can damage both grades and health. Some schools are paying attention. Classes in those schools start at 8:30 a. m. 1.What's the problem talked about in the passage? A.Many kids have too much homework to do. B.Many teenagers don't have enough sleep. C.Many children are crazy about playing computer games. D.Many kids are too lazy to finish their homework on time. 2.The underlined expression “pull all-nighters” most probably means ________. A.开夜车 B.上夜班 C.睡懒觉 D.补作业 3.Which of the following is NOT a reason mentioned in the passage? A.Laziness. B.Homework. C.Housework. D.Computer games. 4.What's the idea suggested at the end of the passage? A.Later start of classes. B.Less homework. C.Going to bed early. D.Eating healthy food. B Will Chips One Day Be Planted In Our Bodies For Identification? A US doctor has planted under his skin a computer chip(芯片)that can send personal information to a scanner(扫描仪). It's a technology that may someday be widely used as a way to identify(识别)people. The chip gives off information which will be scanned by a hand-held reader. The chip is similar to that planted in more than 1 million dogs, cats and other pets in recent years to track(跟踪)and identify them. The doctor decided to test the chip himself after the World Trade Center disaster(灾难). The dead could have been identified if their names and other important information had been chipped. Officials of the company said they hope to sell the chips to patients with man-made arms or legs or other body parts. The idea is that the chip will provide immediate and correct medical information when it is needed. The information can contain(包括)name, telephone number and other information. Or it can send out a message that, when connected to a computer, can call up records. The scanner can read it through clothes from over a meter away. The new product also could be used to control prisoners. Workplaces of great importance may want to use the chips for employees, too. Some parents may consider planting chips in young children or elderly relatives who may be unable to say their names, addresses or telephone numbers. Some medical and technology specialists(专家)said the product raises new questions about the relationship between humans and computer technology and could cause problems if it is used against someone's wishes, or if your personal information is read by those who should not see it. 1.According to the passage, computer chips have already been used to ________. A.catch escaped prisoners B.find missing children C.follow lost animals D.treat sick people 2.The doctor decided to test the chips himself because he believed that ________. A.nobody would dare to try it B.they can be used for identification purposes(目的) C.it has been proved successful on animals D.his patients expected him to experience it first 3.Which of the following statements is best supported by the text? A.This chip has been proved to be very successful. B.The use of this chip will be favored by everybody. C.There will be a great market for chip planting in humans. D.Doctors will make good money by using chips. 4.What problem may be caused by planting chips in the human body? A.People will be controlled by computers. B.Computers could send out wrong information. C.Chips can be the cause of diseases. D.Information may be used improperly. C Geography is the study of Earth and its climates. Scientists use it to study global(全球的)warming and track(跟踪)the weather. Governments use it to learn where people live and work and to plan what to do with the land. It is now easier than ever to use geography because of a science called space technology. The United States launched its first satellite in 1958. Some space missions(使命)that followed were geographical studies. In fact, earth science is a big part of the work of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA). Astronauts looked out of the space shuttle(航天飞机). They decided to take photographs of Earth from their vantage point. Over the years, picture quality improved. Shuttle photography now shows land features, such as rivers. It can even show the streets of large cities. Photos of the same places at different times show how the land is changing. NASA does not use just photographs, though. In 1958 it launched TIROS(the Television Infrared Observation Satellite). This first use of a satellite to study Earth was effective(有效的)in giving weather forecasts. It led to the creation of new space tools to use in geography. The Landsat Program began in 1972. This satellite sent detailed(细致的)views of Earth from space. The pictures were so precise(精确)that scientists could count the number and kinds of crops in a field. Landsat showed where Earth's surface had faults along which earthquakes might happen. This information helped in the planning of new cities and factories. Landsat also made discoveries. In Antarctica it located ranges of unknown mountains. It pinpointed small lakes. in Virginia that were not on maps. Landsat, now more advanced, still flies today. Another space tool is Earth Observing-1(EO-1). This spacecraft flies right behind Landsat. It takes pictures of the same sites. The two sets of pictures, viewed together, show how cities grow and how other places, such as rain forests, become smaller over time. This helps scientists learn how people affect(影响)geography. One of the newest space tools is the Geographical Information Systems(GIS). GIS is computer software that helps scientists to study Earth. GIS is different from earlier space tools. Businesses, schools, and even average people——not just the government——can use it to show them how changes in the planet might affect them. 1.Why do governments study geography according to the passage? A.To improve the environment. B.To make the land use plan. C.To make new discoveries. D.To count the crops in a field. 2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.The U.S. satellite program began in 1972. B.Landsat was able to take pictures of other planets. C.TIROS was successful in giving weather forecasts. D.GIS can only be used by the government. 3.EO-1 takes photographs of the same places as Landsat because ________. A.the two groups of pictures can show the changes of Earth B.EO-1 is practicing for future photography missions C.Landsat is out of date and new pictures are needed D.Landsat can't send detailed views of Earth from space 4.From the passage, we can infer that ________. A.GIS is the newest computer to study Earth B.NASA only depends on photos to study Earth C.satellite pictures can give more detailed information D.recent U. S. satellites are as advanced as the old ones 七、阅读与表达 Eating in space is different from eating on Earth. The food that astronauts carry with them does not look like the food you eat. Some food is carried in closed bags. It is cooked and frozen(冷冻)before the astronauts get it. All the water is removed from the food. In the spaceship, the astronaut puts the water back. He “shoots” hot or cold water into the food bag with a special gun. He eats the food through a small hole in the bag. Other foods come in bite sizes. The astronaut puts a whole piece in his mouth at once. There can be no crumbs(碎屑). Crumbs would float(漂浮)around the spaceship and get in the way. Meat and cake often come in bite-size pieces. Astronauts cannot drink water from open cups. The water would float in drops in the air. The water is put in the special gun. The astronaut shoots the water into his mouth. Eating in space is not easy. Astronauts must learn to eat in their way. 1.What is the food carried in closed bags by astronauts like? ___________________________________________________________________ 2.How do the astronauts eat food in space? ___________________________________________________________________ 3.How do the astronauts drink water in space? ___________________________________________________________________ 4.Why can't the astronauts drink water from open cups? ___________________________________________________________________ 5.What is the main idea of the passage? _______________________________________________________________
