The Plural of German Nouns

As such, the plural has to be learned with the noun!
In practice, however, the gender and the form of a noun give helpful clues as to its plural form 2.2 Standard plural endings 2.2 Standard plural endingsNo ending, same form as the singular (der Onkel die Onkel)
No ending, but Umlaut on stressed vowel (der Vater die Väter)
-er / Umlaut -er (das Kind die Kinder; das Dorf die Dörfer)-e (der Tisch die Tische)
Umlaut -e (der Fuß die Füße)
-(e)n (die Flasche die Flaschen; die Arbeit die Arbeiten) 2.3 Masculine plural endings: -e 2.3 Masculine plural endings: -eThe most common masculine plural endings are -e or umlaut + -e.
Examples without umlaut: der Arm die Arme; der Beruf die Berufe; der Punkt die Punkte; der Hund die Hunde
der Ort die Orte; der Pfad die Pfade; der Dom die Dome; der Ruf die Rufe; der Tag die Tage 2.4 -e plural endings, with no umlaut 2.4 -e plural endings, with no umlautMasculine nouns ending in stressed -al, -an, -ar, -on, and -or take -e with no umlaut:
der Dekan (deacon) die Dekane; der Major die Majore; der Bibliothekar (librarian) die Bibliothekare;
Exceptions: der Kanal die Kanäle; der Kardinal die Kardinäle; der Tenor die Tenöre 2.5 ¨-e plurals with umlaut 2.5 ¨-e plurals with umlaut-e plural endings with umlaut are added by about 50% of the nouns that add -e:
Examples: der Stuhl die Stühle; der Fuß die Füße; der Kuss die Küsse; der Sack die Säcke; der Zug die Züge; der Lauf die Läufe; der Stock die Stöcke
N.B. der Saal (hall) die Säle 2.6 –e and¨-e plurals by type 2.6 –e and¨-e plurals by type-e plural endings with/without umlaut are added by masculine nouns:
which end in -pf,-ps: der Knopf die Knöpfe; der Schlips die Schlipse;
2) which end in -tz: der Platz die Plätze;
3) which are formed from strong verbs: der Fall die Fälle; der Zug die Züge; der Lauf die Läufe 2.7 Plurals of -el, -en, -er nouns 2.7 Plurals of -el, -en, -er nounsMost masculine plurals ending in -el, -en or -er form their plural without an ending - i.e. they have the same form as the singular.
Examples : der Computer die Computer; der Bäcker die Bäcker; der Haken die Haken; der Onkel die Onkel
DO NOT put -s on the plural of der Computer! 2.8 Exceptions: -el, -en, -er nouns 2.8 Exceptions: -el, -en, -er nounsBUT about 24 masculine nouns in -el, -en and -er form their plural without an ending and by umlauting the stressed vowel.
These include male relatives : der Vater die Väter; der Bruder die Brüder; der Schwager (bro’-in-law) die Schwäger
Note also: a bird (der Vogel die Vögel) and its beak (der Schnabel die Schnäbel) 2.9 Other umlauted plurals 2.9 Other umlauted pluralsOther nouns have a zero ending, but add an umlaut to the stem vowel:

der Hammer die Hämmer; der Kasten die Kästen; der Laden die Läden
der Mantel die Mäntel; der Nagel die Nägel; der Ofen die Öfen 2.10 -el, -er nouns: Exceptions 2.10 -el, -er nouns: ExceptionsThe following masculine nouns in -el form their plural by adding -n: der Muskel die Muskeln; der Pantoffel die Pantoffeln; der Stachel (thorn) die Stacheln

No umlauts: der Geist die Geister; der Leib die Leiber; der Ski die Skier
With umlauts: der Gott die Götter; der Mann die Männer; der Mund die Münder ; der Rand die Ränder; der Wald die Wälder; der Wurm die Würmer 2.12 Masc. Plurals: -(e)n endings 2.12 Masc. Plurals: -(e)n endings
Weak masculine nouns have the plural -(e)n
So do some other masculines: der Dorn (thorn) die Dornen; der Nerv die Nerven; der Pfau (peacock) die Pfauen; der Professor die Professoren; der Schmerz die Schmerzen
Also: der See (lake) die Seen; der Staat die Staaten; der Typ (bloke) die Typen; der Zeh die Zehen 2.13 Plural Endings: -us nouns 2.13 Plural Endings: -us nounsMost nouns ending in -us have the plural -en:
Examples: der Rhythmus die Rhythmen; der Organismus die Organismen; der Zyklus die Zyklen; der Genius die Genien; (N.B.: der Kaktus die Kakteen)

Over 90% of feminine nouns have the plural ending -n or -en.
These include nouns in -ade, -age, -anz, -ei, -elle, -enz, -ette, -euse, -heit, -ie, -ik, -in, -ine, -ion, -keit, -schaft, -ung, -ur, -üre
Nouns ending in -in add the plural -innen: die Studentin die Studentinnen
BUT: die StudentInnen = students of both genders! 2.17 Feminine endings: -a 2.17 Feminine endings: -aMany feminine nouns in -a form the plural -en:
Examples: die Aula die Aulen; die Villa die Villen; die Regatta die Regatten
BUT other nouns in -a form the plural -s:
Example: die Kamera die Kameras
And others can have both endings: die Pizza die Pizzas or die Pizzen; die Razzia die Razzias or die Razzien 2.18 Feminine plurals: ¨-e endings 2.18 Feminine plurals: ¨-e endings25% of feminine monosyllabic nouns have the plural ending ¨-e

Examples: das Bein die Beine; das Jahr die Jahre; das Schaf die Schafe
These include most polysllabic neuters (esp. foreign nouns): das Telefon die Telefone; das Teleskop die Teleskope
Only one adds umlaut: das Floß die Flöße 2.24 Neuter plurals: -er endings 2.24 Neuter plurals: -er endingsRoughly 25% of neuter nouns have the plural ending -er or ¨-er (Umlaut is used if possible)
Most of these are monosyllabic: das Blatt die Blätter; das Dorf die Dörfer; das Kind die Kinder; das Tal die Täler
There a few polysllabic neuters: das Gehalt (salary) die Gehälter; das Gesicht die Gesichter; das Gespenst die Gespenster 2.25 Neuter plurals: ¨-er endings 2.25 Neuter plurals: ¨-er endingsNeuter nouns ending in -tum add the plural ending ¨-er

This is also true of masculine -tum nouns:

Three neuter nouns have the plural -n:

It is used most often with loan words: das Büro die Büros; das Team die Teams; das Hotel die Hotels; der Streik die Streiks; der Balkon die Balkons
English words in -y have the plural -ys:

-s plural is used with words ending in a vowel other than unstressed -e:
Examples: das Auto die Autos; die Oma die Omas; das Genie die Genies; der Uhu die Uhus; der Profi die Profis

The plural is -männer where we think of individuals or non-humans:
